It was big, if not quite epic.
Coupeville High School cross country has been to larger events this season, but Saturday’s Mountain Loop Invitational in Granite Falls still drew a considerable field, with 267 high school runners from 13 schools vying for awards and PRs.
The Wolves held up well against big school rivals, claiming fifth place in both of the varsity team battles, with Lynden Christian and Cascade (Leavenworth) taking home the crowns in the girls’ and boys’ competitions, respectively.
Sophomore Cyrus Sparacio (3rd) and freshman Anna Powers (10th) had the best finishes for CHS on the 5,000-meter course, which was advertised as having “plenty of rolling terrain, some wide-open flat grass, a nasty little hill, and spectacular mountain views.”
Coupeville competed in pink outfits as Elizabeth Bitting’s squad participated in the battle to raise awareness of breast cancer, which caused junior Laken Simpson to remark that the Wolves “were the highlighters of the race!”
She and her teammates will be back in action next Thursday when they travel to Bellingham for the Lake Lap Invite.
Anna Powers cheers as big sis Allie charges for the finish line.
