Barring a postseason matchup, they finish in a tie.
Coupeville grads Lyla Stuurmans and Mia Farris met for the fourth time on opposite sides of the net in a college volleyball match Friday, with the former helping Skagit Valley slide past visiting Whatcom in four tense sets.
The Cardinals rallied on the night they honored their sophomores, holding off the Orcas 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18, earning a split in the season series for the second straight year.
Stuurmans and Farris were both CHS Athlete of the Year winners and key players on a Wolf spiker squad which finished fourth at state during their senior season, and now near the end of their runs at their two-year colleges.
Friday night’s win lifts Skagit to 7-4 in Northwest Athletic Conference play, 14-10 overall, while Whatcom slips to 3-7 and 9-17.
Stuurmans and the Cardinals are in third place in the North Region, with one regular season match left to play, while Whatcom and Farris are in fifth, with two contests still on the schedule.
The top four teams make the playoffs.
Farris scraped a fair number of balls off the floor while on the road Friday, piling up 19 digs to go with two assists and a service ace.
Across the net Stuurmans racked up seven kills, 15 digs, an assist, an ace, and a block assist in her final regular season home match.
On the season, Farris has tallied 37 kills, 40 assists, 48 aces, 364 digs, two solo blocks, a block assist, and 87.5 points.
Stuurmans has 148 kills, 15 assists, 24 aces, 225 digs, eight solo blocks, 35 block assists, and 197.5 points.
