Madeline Strasburg gets visibly annoyed at times when she’s playing.

And that’s a good thing, because when she does, the Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates her 17th birthday today, generally responds by unleashing a butt-whuppin’ on the rival team that has just irritated her.

If she loses the basketball on one play, or gets a foul called on her by a blind ref, she slams down the court like a whirlwind the next and rams the ball right down the throat of the defense.

Twice last season, in back-to-back games that were two weeks apart thanks to winter break, she pulled off the same dazzling play from the very same place on the court — virtual mirror images reflecting Strasburg fully earning the nickname Maddie Big Time.

In both games, she capped the third quarter by stealing the ball, whirling around and draining LONG three-point bombs off the glass, shots that dropped through the twine a mere fraction of a second before the horn sounded.

Then, both times, she spun around, hands slapping her thighs like a gunslinger putting away their six-shooters.

Rival fans and coaches cried softly those days, while Maddie Big Time permitted a small smile to grace her lips.

Even then, it was the smile of a stone cold killer.

CHS has some very talented athletes, but Strasburg is a rarity.

At a time when everyone has been raised to be overly reverent and deferential to the players on the opposing teams, she’s a bit of a throw back.

Volleyball, basketball, softball. Pick a sport. She is here to kick your butt.

That’s a beautiful thing to see.

Taya Boonstra: American Legend

Taya Boonstra — she doesn’t mind if you take her photo.

Taya Boonstra is God’s gift to photographers.

Part of a proud tradition of camera-friendly Coupeville High School athletes that includes McKayla Bailey, Hunter Hammer and Caleb Valko, Ms. Boonstra never met a camera she couldn’t photo bomb.

During her time as a Wolf, whether she was doing time as a cheerleader or playing in the games herself, the irrepressible one always sparkled on camera.

She played her rear off on the court and diamond, but never failed to keep one eye cocked for a wandering camera.

Now a student at the University of Washington, Taya celebrates her birthday today. The legend turns 20.

And on this day, and every other day, we celebrate her — one of the classiest, sassiest to ever wear the red and black.

She made her town a better place, and she will always be held in high regard by those who have known her.

You are the gold standard, Ms. Boonstra. Never change.

It's like sunshine flows from every pore in Chelsea Randall's face. (Kelsey Simmons photo)

Savannah (left) and Chelsea Randall, early in their careers.

Chelsea Randall has a smile that lights up the world.

Not just the room she’s in, or the city outside that room, or the continental U.S., but the entire freakin’ globe. It’s a documented fact.

Seriously.

Scientists in Oslo have determined that one smile from Ms. Randall can cure entire villages of depression, malcontentedness and you-look-like-you-have-a-stick-up-your-rear syndrome and are debating flying her into war-torn countries as a one-woman USO tour shooting joy from her dimples.

It’s Nobel Prize-worthy research, really.

For the next two nights, you, the person reading this article as you try to open your eyes and stuff some cereal in your face, can help make the sunniness bloom in her cheeks. Can make her eyes twinkle like the stars set free from the heavens.

It’s simple.

Slap down a few bucks and see Whidbey Island Center for the Arts production of “City of Angels” as it plays its final two shows.

Fill the seats, from the floor to the back row and reward the show’s supremely-talented choreographer/assistant director (and everyone else involved in the creation of an intricate, wildly entertaining musical comedy) for the countless hours she has poured into giving Whidbey a slice of Broadway in its own backyard.

Chelsea, working with mom Elizabeth Herbert (director) and lil’ sis Savannah Randall (one of the show’s leading ladies with Karla Crouch and Deana Duncan) has taken a show that won multiple Tony Awards and injected her own brand of sassy dance into it, bringing new life to the already-strong music.

The show is fast-talkin’ and high-swingin’ for the fences, and the untold hours she and her cohorts have poured into the show need to be rewarded.

Of course, you could wait until Chelsea ends up on the Great White Way, as a writer or choreographer, and go buy a ticket to see her work then.

Or, you could make your wallet happy and spring for a ticket now and still have some bucks left over for dinner or drinks pre-or-post-show.

You’re smart. You’re reading this story, after all. So the decision is easy.

Unleash the smile.

Kacie Kiel, she's kind of a big deal. (John Fisken photos)

Kacie Kiel, she’s kind of a big deal. (John Fisken photos)

They’ll tell you that there’s no school today because it’s Presidents Day.

Not true.

It’s actually because Coupeville High School junior basketball sensation Kacie Kiel, perhaps the best defender in the Cascade Conference — and certainly the happiest — celebrates her 17th birthday today.

So, if you try to go to the bank, or the library, and get nowhere fast, just remember, it’s because today is the day an American legend was born.

Superstar

Jae LeVine: she’s kind of a big deal.

Jae LeVine is all heart.

The Coupeville High School freshman is a whirlwind as manager of the Wolf girls’ basketball team, and a big part of her job is bouncing around, grabbing every one of her players and squeezing the life out of them.

She’s a hugger and a smiler and, through good times and bad times, the mighty mite is a dispenser of good feelings to her girls, her fans, her coaches and anyone else who wanders into her path.

Today, on Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day, take a moment to think about Jae — she has survived and thrived while dealing with a Ventricular Septal Defect (a large hole in the inner heart wall that required open heart surgery as a baby) — and the other men, women and children like her.

If she can fight the fight that she does, and be so dang happy all the time, maybe the rest of us can suck it up a bit and stop complaining about our little problems.

Forget about Be Like Mike.

Be Like Jae.
