“The boys played with so much heart all night.”

Kicking off Northwest 2B/1B League play with a bang Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad survived a wild one, holding off visiting Orcas Island 72-67 in two overtimes to take an early advantage in the conference standings.

The win lifts the Wolves, who host non-league foe Morton-White Pass Saturday, to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in NWL play, and earns the stamp of approval from CHS hoops guru Brad Sherman.

“It was a great game,” he said, then headed off to bed to dream about more wins.

Friday’s rumble featured Wolf junior Chase Anderson banking in a career-high 42 points — just six off of Jeff Stone’s school-record 48, which has stood since 1970 — and nerve-wracking plays from both teams down the stretch.

Coupeville shot out to a 16-10 lead after one quarter, only to see Orcas trim the deficit back down to 29-26 at the half.

Up 49-45 after three, the Wolves still had a 58-55 lead up until Joe Stephens drilled his fourth, and final, three-ball with just 10 seconds left in regulation.

With the ball in its hands, Coupeville got multiple shots up in the frantic final seconds, but none would drop.

Enter the refs, who whistled Orcas for a foul, sending the Wolves to the line with 0:00 on the clock, holding two opportunities to win the game.

The first freebie hit the front of the rim, the second slid off the side, and fans got extra action, whether they wanted it or not.

In the first overtime, the call went the other way, but the result was eerily similar.

With the game knotted at 63, Orcas was handed two charity shots with seven seconds on the clock and promptly clanked both.

It was fitting, as the Vikings, who netted eight of nine free throws in regulation, were just 3-9 across the two extra periods. In contrast, Coupeville was 8-16 in regulation but rebounded to go 8-10 at the line in overtime.

While a wild Wolf shot at the buzzer failed to break the tie in the first overtime, the second extra four-minute stretch decisively belonged to the hometown hoops heroes.

Anderson and Hunter Bronec netted huge buckets in the second overtime, while Hurlee Bronec iced the win with precision free throw shooting in the final moments.

Jack Porter finished with nine points, while both Battlin’ Bronec Brothers netted six.

Landon Roberts knocked down five, Camden Glover banked in four, and Johnny Porter, Easton Green, and Malachi Somes all saw floor time in the thriller.

For Anderson, it was a career-making night.

Scoring four points in the first, 12 in the second, 16 in a torrid third, four in the fourth, and six more in overtime, he joins a very short list of Wolves to crack 40 in a varsity game, players such as Jeff Stone, Allen Black, and Logan Downes.

In one night, Anderson jumps from 312 career points to 354, moving from #96 to #77 on the school’s career scoring chart, which has been compiled across 108 seasons.

Among the all-timers he passes are Nick StreubelDavid Ford, Bob Rea, Utz Conard, Robin Larson, and Aaron Trumbull.

“We have launch!” (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They’re headed home for the finale.

Having survived a four-game road trip, with the last of those clashes coming Monday at Lakewood, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams finally make it back to their home gym.

The Wolves close their eight-game schedule with a rumble against South Whidbey this coming Monday, Dec. 16, facing off with a rival they swept three games from the first time around.

While CMS was competitive against Lakewood, a much-larger school which funnels students to a 2A high school, the Cow Town hoops stars came up just short on the scoreboard.

How things played out:

Level 1:

Coupeville netted a pair of three-balls but fell 65-23.

Kamden Ratcliff paced the Wolves with a team-high eight points, while Chayse Van Velkinburgh (7), Jonathan Kappes (6), and River Simpson (2) rounded out the offensive attack.

Xander Beaman, Trey Stewart, Gracen Joiner, Diesel Eck, and Calvin Kappes also saw floor time for the Wolves.

Level 2:

The final score is still up for question, as the books don’t match, but Darius Stewart popped for 10 to lead CMS in a narrow loss.

Joiner (6), Colton Ashby (2), and Cyrus Sparacio (1) rippled the nets, as well, while Jacob Lujan, Jonah Meek, Aiden Wheat, Cole Van Dyke, Mario Martinez, Xander Flowers, Trenton Thule, and Maverick Walling were also in uniform.

Level 3:

Les Queen, who leads all Wolves in scoring this season, pumped in a game-high 22 in a 35-31 defeat.

Jonah Meek made the nets bounce for five — becoming the 24th CMS player to score this season — while Liam Stoner and Henry Jackson both banked in a bucket.

Talon Gamble, Kion Tellery, Jack Bailey, Carson Marley, and Oliver Miller rounded out the roster.

The Wolf JV gets some words of advice. (Kim Arends photo)

“We ARE getting better with each game!”

While the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team fell to 1-2 on the season with a narrow 45-38 loss Monday at Forks, Wolf coach Jon Roberts came away pleased with a lot.

At least until he had to get back on the bus and endure a knee-wrecking journey back to Whidbey from the hinterlands.

“Overall, we feel like the loss and score didn’t match the intensity most players played at, or the fact that we outscored Forks in the second, third, and fourth quarters,” Roberts said.

It was the first frame that was the sticking point, as Coupeville started cold and fell behind 16-2 after eight minutes of play.

From that moment on, it was advantage Wolves, with the visitors outscoring their hosts 36-29 the rest of the way.

A 13-6 run in the third, fueled by Davin Houston and Carson Grove, almost got CHS all the way back, but the feisty Spartans held on at the end for the win.

Houston “had a breakout night both scoring and playing some lights out defense,” while leading the Wolves with a season-high 17-point performance.

Grove (8), Sage Arends (5), Nathan Coxsey (4), Easton Green (2), and Riley Lawless (2) also scored for CHS, with Malachi Somes, Liam Blas, and Khanor Jump seeing floor time.

The Wolves return to action this weekend, hosting Orcas Island Friday and Morton-White Pass Saturday.

It’s a 226-mile trip from Coupeville to Forks and back.

And while Monday’s trek to Ron Bagby’s hometown didn’t produce a win for the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad, the hope is that lessons were learned.

Lessons that will pay off down the road for Brad Sherman’s squad, which is 1-3 but a few plays away from being 3-1.

Monday’s mashup mirrored the majority of Coupeville’s games thus far — a slow start, a hot finish, but a clock which runs out too soon.

Despite charging back in the second half, the Wolves, a team with very little varsity experience, fell 55-47 in the non-conference clash.

It wasn’t for lack of effort, as Coupeville hit five of its six three-balls in the second half, while outscoring the Spartans 14-13 and 16-11 across the final two quarters.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, they came out of the break trailing 31-17, after Forks used a 19-9 run in the second quarter to take control of things.

The Spartans nailed four of their six shots from behind the three-point arc during that frame to put the Wolves on their heels.

While the two squads matched each other on shots from the parking lot, Coupeville convincingly won the free throw shooting part of the night.

The Wolves netted 11 of 20 shots, tying their best performance of the season, while Forks went a godawful 2-14 from the charity stripe.

Chase Anderson slices past a defender.

CHS spread its offense out between seven players Monday, with junior Chase Anderson netting a season-high 21 to lead the attack.

That scoring outburst propels him from 291 career points to 312 and moves him into the top 100 scorers in the 108-year history of Wolf boys’ basketball.

Anderson, sitting at #96 all-time with home games against Orcas Island and Morton-White Pass set for Friday and Saturday, slips past John Beasley (293), Noel Criscuola (298), Blake Day (299), Noah Roehl (301), Allen Black (305), and Ben Hayes (306).

Jack Porter (7), Camden Glover (6), Hunter Bronec (5), Hurlee Bronec (4), Landon Roberts (2), and Johnny Porter (2) also scored at Forks.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Playing their best ball of the short season Saturday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad smacked visiting Clallam Bay to snap a two-game losing streak.

Leading from start to finish, with four guys scoring in double digits and the team having its best free throw shooting performance so far, the Wolves romped to a 76-53 win.

The victory lifts CHS to 1-2 heading into a week where it will square off with Forks, Orcas Island, and Morton-White Pass.

After tough bouts with Mount Baker and South Whidbey in which the Wolves had to fight from behind all game, this time Brad Sherman’s team seized the advantage and never let it go.

They did it by sharing the ball, hitting the boards with intensity, and not being ruffled by a Clallam Bay team which tried (and largely failed) to impose its physical will.

Hurlee Bronec and Camden Glover netted back-to-back buckets in the paint to open the scoring, and the Wolves got points from six different players during a 21-13 run in the first quarter.

The Battlin’ Bronec Brothers keyed things, with Hurlee rampaging down low and Hunter slipping outside to splash home a three-ball, but everyone on the floor had a contribution to make.

That never changed as the game went on.

While the fouls began to pile up, on both sides, and Clallam Bay made several mini-runs, Coupeville had an answer each time.

Once the lead got to double-digits at 24-13 — thanks to Chase Anderson converting a breakaway layup and free throw after getting hammered — it never went back to single-digits again.

Coupeville pushed the lead out to 38-22 at the half, and did so by converting its free throws, which had been a bit of a stumbling block across the first two games.

Then, coming out of the locker room, Sherman unleashed Glover on the Bruins, and the burly Wolf tore apart the defense for 10 of his team-high 20 points in the third quarter.

He did it a variety of ways, both powering through the paint for buckets — even while being whacked by 101 defender arms — and by curling outside and draining three-balls right in the face of the defense.

With Glover on a rampage, Coupeville carried a 59-43 lead into the fourth, before closing with a vengeance.

Nine of 10 Wolves to hit the floor scored, with Easton Green adding some fiery pop on the defensive side of the floor.

Glover finished with a varsity career-high 20 points, while Hurlee Bronec (14), Anderson (13), and Jack Porter (10) also had hot hands.

Hunter Bronec (7), Johnny Porter (6), Landon Roberts (2), Carson Field (2), and Malachi Somes (2) also scored, with Field and Somes recording their first varsity buckets.

It was a historical night for Hunter Bronec, as well, as he cracked the 100-point barrier for his varsity career when he converted a bucket off of an offensive rebound in the third quarter.
