Joey Lippo

Joey Lippo had six points and four rebounds in a 53-44 win.

Dante Mitchell had a very good trip.

When the Coupeville High School basketball teams went to Orcas Island Friday, it made for an all-day and all-night adventure.

But, with four wins in four games, the Wolves were rewarded for spending huge chunks of time traveling to the middle of nowhere.

And while nearly all the CHS players put up solid performances once they were on the tiny Island, few could match Mitchell.

Throwing down 20 points, snatching eight rebounds and handing out three assists, the Wolf junior paced the JV boys’ to their second win of the season, a start-to-finish 53-44 romp.

Now 2-5 on the season heading into the Christmas break, the young Wolves are starting to jell.

“They played pretty inspired,” said Coupeville coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Had the lead the whole game. Got good minutes off the bench.

“We’re starting to come together.”

Freshman Hunter Smith tallied 10 points in support of Mitchell’s offensive explosion, while DeAndre Mitchell (9), Joey Lippo (6), Desmond Bell (4) and Brian Shank (2) rounded out the attack.

DeAndre Mitchell hauled in six boards, with Lippo, Bell and Shank each collecting four.

Smith added three boards and a team-high four assists.

Wiley Hesselgrave went off.

Raining down buckets from the opening tip Friday, the Coupeville High school junior threw up 17 points in limited minutes — foul trouble kept him glued to the bench for nearly two quarters — sparking the Wolves to a big 69-42 non-conference win at Orcas Island.

The victory snapped a three-game skid for CHS and improved it to 2-5 on the season.

The Wolves will now be off until Dec. 30, when they travel to Concrete.

Despite the long trip to Orcas, Coupeville came out with fresh legs and took the game right at the Vikings.

Orcas boasts a six-foot-eight sophomore, but the Wolves bedeviled him and his teammates by running right at them.

“We jumped on them in the beginning. They thought they had a chance to beat us, and we changed their minds,” said Coupeville coach Anthony Smith. “It was a great team effort, a good, solid win.”

The Wolves played fast, a bit loose and super-aggressive, changing up defenses on the fly, and it flustered the Vikings.

They also came out strongly in the third quarter, breaking a bad trend of slow starts after halftime.

“We had a good third,” Smith said. “That has been our nemesis, but guys really stepped up.

“Ryan (Griggs) played some big minutes for us, (Aaron) Curtin anchored us the way he always does — it doesn’t always show up in the stats, but he’s our guy who leads by example — and then Wiley checked back in in the fourth and we hammered them.”

Aaron Trumbull stepped up with a big 16 to back Hesselgrave, while Griggs pounded inside for 12.

CJ Smith (6), Risen Johnson (5), Joel Walstad (4), Curtin (4), Matt Shank (3) and Gabe Wynn (2) rounded out the scorers.

The team-wide display of hustle and intensity showed up in the defensive stats, as well, with Curtin (6), Hesselgrave (4), Johnson (4) and Griggs (4) leading the charge on the boards.

Hesselgrave and Johnson had four steals apiece.

JV wins too: The young guns also romped to their second win of the season, bouncing Orcas 53-44.

“The JV is really coming along,” Smith said. “We can go seven or eight deep with little drop-off, and that’s great for a JV team. Our future looks bright.”

No scoring stats were available.

"You can't contain him! You can only hope to slow him down!!"

“You can’t contain Hunter Smith! Fools!!” Hunter Downes testifies.

"Damn straight, son!!"

“Damn straight, son!!”

We need to talk about Hunter Smith.

The Coupeville High School freshman is burning up the court for the Wolf JV basketball squad (he also saw some floor time for the varsity earlier this season) and he’s catching the camera’s eye.

Three of the seven photos that John Fisken offers us from Wednesday’s JV match-up with Friday Harbor feature the fast-rising phenom in full color action.

That’s good news for mom Charlotte, who has easy access to some nice photos of her middle child, and for Wolf fans, who have a shooting star to admire.

Desmond Bell

“I’m liking the energy we are getting from the bench. Guys are excited to play and it shows.”

While his squad lost Wednesday in a game that was scheduled at the last second, Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh can see the positives.

“We are beginning to figure some things out,” he said. “Just need to find our stride earlier in games. At points this season, when we click and play well together, as we are capable of, we have been scary.”

The Wolves cut a 21-point deficit to six at one point against visiting Friday Harbor, but also had stretches that were less pleasant.

A slow start and a bad finish combined to send CHS to a 61-39 loss.

The game was a late pick-up for the young Wolves (now 1-5), who had an opening on their schedule since an earlier varsity opponent, Darrington, didn’t have a second team.

Friday Harbor’s two girls’ teams were already scheduled to come to Whidbey, so the Wolverine JV boys hitched a ride with them.

With little time to plan for the game, Coupeville came out cold.

One of the team’s leading scorers, DeAndre Mitchell, got in early foul trouble and spent much of the first half attached to the bench.

In his place, the Wolves got a big boost from freshman Hunter Downes, who “came in and gave us great energy off the bench.”

With Downes on the floor, Coupeville cut a 9-1 deficit to 13-8 by the end of the first quarter.

Hunter Smith nailed a running floater a tick before the buzzer to send his squad into the opening break on a positive note.

Unfortunately, things soured quickly as the Wolves went on a tear of missed layups, repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot after getting solid looks at the basket.

Things worsened as CHS came out of the halftime break with little spark, letting Friday Harbor stretch out its lead past the 20-point barrier.

After a Van Velkinburgh timeout, the Wolves finally seemed to wake up.

Desmond Bell stroked a three-point bomb from the corner to kick things off and Coupeville immediately stole the in-bounds pass on the next play, scoring another quick bucket.

The Wolves cut their deficit back to six, but Friday Harbor survived, nailing a trey to blunt the run.

Down by 10 with 90 seconds to play, Coupeville cleared its bench and the visitors closed the game on a 12-0 run.

Smith paced the Wolves with 14 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists, while Bell racked up nine points, four boards and two steals.

When he was able to stay on the court, DeAndre Mitchell was effective, pumping in eight points and snatching seven boards.

Dante Mitchell (five points, six boards), Brian Shank (one point, six boards) and Downes (two points, three boards and “countless floor burns”) all chipped in, as well.

swish

Yep, this team is ready for its close-up.

The future of Wolf boys’ basketball is on its way and it includes my former “assistant manager.”

During my years at David’s DVD Den (2007-2009), Daniel Olson would camp out behind the counter and operate the computer and cash drawer whenever his family came to the store.

Jump forward five years and Olson is now a sixth grader(!) at Coupeville Middle School (older brother Ben is a freshman on the high school JV squad) and a fast-rising b-ball star.

This season the younger Olson is joining a batch of other hot-shooting hoops wizards on a Coupeville SWISH basketball team.

The squad, which is made up of nine sixth-graders and one precocious, fast-dribbling third grader (Logan Downes), is in its third week of practice. The first game is Jan. 10.

The roster includes Olson, Logan Downes, older brother Sage Downes, Jake Mitten, Erik Webster, Michael Laska, Alex Jimenez, Matthew Kelley, Dakota Eck and Raymond Anderson.

With the exception of the younger Downes, everyone on the roster has at least four seasons of ball under their belts.

Kelley, who played for an 8-4 Oak Harbor team last year, is the seasoned vet, entering his seventh season.

Current CHS freshman (and big brothers) Hunter Downes and Ben Olson help coach the team when they have a break in their own basketball schedule.
