The end result did not equal the trip.

Despite giving veteran Coupeville High School boys’ tennis coach Ken Stange “one of the most enjoyable seasons I’ve ever had,” the Wolves hit a brick wall doing 80 Wednesday at the district tennis tourney in Langley. Despite both of their singles and both doubles teams winning at least one match, Coupeville failed to advance anyone to quad-districts.

The introduction of South Whidbey, a perennial tennis power, back to 1A tennis hurt CHS, as the Falcons claimed both of the top spots in the cutthroat doubles competition. That snapped a three-year run as a a district champ for Wolf senior Nathan Lamb, who won doubles titles his first two years on the court, before moving to singles last season.

This time around, Lamb played singles all season, then teamed up with fellow singles player Aaron Curtin to form a formidable duo. They lost a tough semifinal match to a South Whidbey squad, then rebounded to beat Wolf teammates Ben Etzell and Jason Knoll (subbing for an ill Ben Wehrman) in the third-place match.

Sebastian Davis and Brian Norris, who had won the team’s singles slots during an all-team battle royal last week, each dropped their first match, came roaring back to win their second, then were eliminated in their second loser-out match.

While the results weren’t quite what Stange might have hoped for, he does have some huge positives to look back upon. Boasting his biggest roster, by far, this season, he will lose only two seniors — Lamb and Wehrman — while retaining a huge core group that showed amazing improvement as the season played out.

“One realization I had right when I realized the season was over — and that always comes abruptly — is that even though this is the first time in years I have failed to qualify anyone for quads, this was truly one of the most enjoyable seasons I’ve ever had,” Stange said. “We had so much new blood out there and the boys all improved over the course of the season.

“We lost often but it didn’t effect the mood badly,” he added. “My boys were top shelf all the way and I can’t wait to get back at it next season.”

Like every season, though, he will have to adjust to the loss of players who have been with him for years.

“It’s sad to see Nate and Ben W. part from us,” Stange said. “Those two gentlemen have been nothing short of amazing to me.

Nate is a magician on the court and Ben has the most solid work ethic since Connor Tasoff,” he added. “They’ve given years to the program and have influenced many younger players in a positive way.”

We’re still eight months away from graduation, but saying goodbye to Coupeville High School seniors starts Thursday.

Both the Wolf booters (5 PM) and spikers (7 PM) play their final home game of the season that night, with Granite Falls as the visiting team which should lose if they want to show the proper respect.

Then, the next night, the Coupeville gridiron squad (7 PM) will host its last game at Mickey Clark Field, with King’s, the state’s top-ranked 1A squad, as the intended victim.

Having their final bow before the hometown fans will be:

Soccer — Anna Bailey, Vanessa Bernales, Amanda d’Almeida, Haley Marx, Kelsey Miranda, Kelsey Pape, Madison Tisa McPhee, Rachel Wenzel.

Volleyball — Rhiannon Ellsworth, Lauren Escalle, Katie Kiel, Iris Ryckaert, Bessie Walstad.

Football — Riley Boyd, Serigio Guerro, Kole Kellison, Anthony Maggio, Danny Savalza, Paul Schmakeit, Caleb Valko.

Cheer — Nicole Becker, Emily Clay, Holly Craggs, Darian Emerick, Escalle, Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Kiel, Teri Lee, Ryckaert.

And, not to be forgotten, Wolf netters Nathan Lamb and Ben Wehrman are also departing the court (after they whip up on some people at districts and then, hopefully, at quad-districts and state.)

One day. One stinkin’ day.

That’s how close the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis team, and their outside, open court-playing brethren in District 1 came to completing a completely rain-free fall sports season.

It didn’t happen, however, as the rain that finally moved in after four plus months of clear skies, washed away Saturday’s scheduled district tennis tournament in Langley. The Wolves, South Whidbey, Friday Harbor, Lummi Island and Meridian hope to hit the courts on Tuesday, but, with rain forecast for a nice stretch now, that’s questionable.

The five schools do have a bit of time to play with, as the next round, Quad-Districts, doesn’t take place until Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Whenever they do see semi-blue (or at least rain-free) skies again, the Wolves will send singles players Sebastian Davis and Brian Norris and doubles duos Nathan Lamb/Aaron Curtin and Ben Etzell/Ben Wehrman out to do battle.

It’s been a week. Time to start getting all misty-eyed over what was.

So, with that in mind, we head back to last Friday’s 2nd annual Coupeville High School Homecoming parade and hand you off to our photographer on the street, Melissa Zimmerman-Losey.

It was a time when the sun still sparkled. When the air had a hint of warmness about it. A time when there were no rain drops splattering down once every five or six hours. It was a time…

Enjoy. Share with your friends. Only 358 days until the next go-round.

A young man of many looks, Sebastian Davis now closely resembles a bonafide tennis ace.

Sebastian Davis is on top of the world.

The Coupeville High School freshman was the last man standing after Death Rumble ’12, Coupeville High School’s inter-squad slug-fest to decide who would claim its two singles spots for this weekend’s district tournament.

Having knocked off junior Brian Norris Thursday, Davis will be the top-seeded Wolf when Coupeville faces off with Friday Harbor, South Whidbey, Lummi Island and Meridian Saturday, Oct. 13 in Langley.

Norris will join him there, as will the doubles duos of Aaron Curtin and Nathan Lamb — Coupeville’s top two singles players during the regular season — and Ben Wehrman and Ben Etzell.
