You might want to hold on to your seats, because this has never before been attempted in the annuals of Coupeville sports blogging.

I am going to — wait for it — publish the name of EVERY varsity and JV fall sports athlete at Coupeville High School (and yes, I consider cheer a sport, regardless of what school officials say).

But it gets better. I am going to try and spell at least 83.6% of the names correctly! Oh yeah, it’s on!!!!

Ben Wehrman, seen here during a match earlier this season, teamed with Ben Etzell to handily win a key doubles match Friday. (Wendy McCormick photo)

It was a good day to be a tennis player in Coupeville.

The sun was out, the head coach had won a dance-off to defeat another teacher for the coveted title of Duke of Homecoming, none of the Wolf players took a tennis ball to the face at warp speed (more on that later) and the wins were coming fast and furious.

By the time they had wrapped up a brisk hour-and-a-half of court play, the Coupeville High School netters had swept visiting Friday Harbor 5-0 Friday afternoon, leaving their royal overseer — one Ken Stange, clad in his sash and crown as befits a man with the moves of an in-his-prime Patrick Swayze — quite contented.

“It was a fun day for us. Lots of wins. Time to go get ready for districts,” said Stange with a slight touch of royalty in his voice.

There had been laser shots delivered by Wolf ace Nathan Lamb, some impressive rallies and, for fans down on the end court, the rare sight of a Friday Harbor player winding up and accidentally blasting a (very low) overhead right off of the noggin of his hapless doubles partner.

To his credit, the Friday Harbor player managed to stay on his feet (barely) after being lit up at close range, adjusted his eye goggles and then seriously considered whether he should have played football — where the pain is considerably less.

The Wolves, who wrapped up a 4-4 regular season — the best record of any fall CHS squad — will now prepare for districts, set for next Saturday, Oct. 13 in Langley. That will bring together players from Coupeville, South Whidbey, Friday Harbor, Lummi Island and Meridian.

Coupeville will play an internal tournament this week to decide who earns its two singles and two doubles slots for the tourney. The battle for the singles spots should be wide open, as the team’s top singles players, Lamb and Aaron Curtin, will team up to play doubles, Stange said.

Complete Friday Harbor results:

1st Singles — Nathan Lamb beat Sean Hills 6-1, 6-3

2nd Singles — Aaron Curtin won by default
1st Doubles — Ben Etzell/Ben Wehrman beat Kerry Wang/Bruce Yao 6-0, 6-2
2nd Doubles — Jason Knoll/Brian Norris beat Cody Coyne/Mars LeBron 6-3, 6-0
3rd Doubles — Dawson d’Almeida/Shane Squire beat Kyle Jangard/Lucas Noeth 6-2, 6-2

4th Doubles — Brandon Kelley/Sebastian Davis lost to Wang/Yao 8-6
5th Doubles: Beauman Davis/Geoff McClarin lost to Jangard/Noeth 8-2
6th Doubles — Sam Wynn/Garrett Compton lost to Coyne/LeBron 8-0

We send you live to the streets of Coupeville, where intrepid photographer Shelli Trumbull is on the scene, clicking away and capturing the sights and sounds of Coupeville High School’s 2nd Annual Homecoming Parade.

For members of Wolf Nation who couldn’t be on Main Street today, you’re welcome.

And the last photo? That’s not a Shelli shot, but features CHS boys’ tennis coach Ken Stange, celebrating his win as the Duke of Homecoming — a title he won with a dance routine that recalled the best of Patrick Swayze.

Jodi and Jon Crimmins, aka The Awesome Twosome.

They are Coupeville’s own Brad and Angelina, just more athletic.

And while they may live down on the South End of Whidbey Island these days, allowing their daughter Maggie to play middle school volleyball for Langley (it’s just not right, I say), Jon and Jodi Crimmins remain Wolves at heart.

He was a tennis ace in his younger days (I have the vintage Whidbey News-Times photos to prove it) and she, back when she went by the pre-marriage alias of Jodi Christensen, was the hardest-working basketball player I have ever witnessed take the floor at CHS.

She frequently bounced off the floor, elbowed her own teammates (accidentally, she claimed) in the face while in pursuit of elusive rebounds and earned the respect and admiration of even the crustiest coach.

Off the floor, Jodi worked at Miriam’s Espresso for a stint in her younger days and earned the title of Nicest Person in the Entire Universe. Jon, while just a hair behind his high school sweetheart, still turned out pretty nice himself.

Now Jodi is a teacher and Jon is a forest ranger and they have two kids (the aforementioned Maggie, who needs to switch to the red and black by her high school days, and Aiden). And they remain eternally awesome.

I bring this up because this Friday marks the 16th wedding anniversary of Jon and Jodi, and because, since it’s my blog, I can write about whatever I feel like.

And what I feel like this morning is saying, good on you, Crimmins clan. You guys are the best and I hope your anniversary day — ah heck, your anniversary week — is as splendid as the people involved.

Now, we do need to talk about this whole moving closer to Coupeville thing.

Maggie Crimmins, Falcon? Doesn’t sound right.

Maggie Crimmins, second-generation Wolf, laying down the Elbow o’ Death like her mom once did?

That’s history. That’s destiny.

Nathan Lamb, seen here blasting a shot in a match earlier this season, put up a ferocious battle against a top-level player Saturday. (Wendy McCormick photo)

The 99% were very proud Saturday.

Nathan Lamb, representing public school excellence, went toe-to-toe with the best from ritzy private school/tennis power The Overlake School and held his own. Swapping cannon shots at each other, Lamb and Grant Gibson, a state tournament caliber player, fought to a virtual standstill, with Gibson eking out a paper-thin 8-6 win.

Lamb’s never-say-die performance, and a similar one from fellow singles player Aaron Curtin, were the brightest highlights in a match where Coupeville got rolled 5-0 by the pride of prep school land. Still, even in defeat, the Wolf netters got to experience a different side of high school tennis.

“Even though most of the boys lost, they got the chance to see how the club players who play 12 months out of the year play tennis,” said Coupeville coach Ken Stange. “It would have taken a great deal of old age and treachery for me to beat the boy Nathan played.”

Lamb and Curtin did get a bit of sweet revenge, teaming for a doubles win in an exhibition match.

The Wolves wrap up regular season play with a home match against Friday Harbor. It’s set for 3 PM Friday, Oct. 5 (the same time the Homecoming parade starts a few blocks away) and will be still going on long after the parade wraps up, allowing local fans to hit both.
