That’s the feeling around town this Wednesday. Fall weather is creeping in over the horizon (not that it will keep me out of Penn Cove) and none of the Coupeville High School teams are in action.

To remind you of what has come before (and what will come again) we offer up a medley of John Fisken photos for your easy-reading pleasure.

Also, a reminder.

After games, when I post Fisken pics, there generally is a link to the billion or so other photos he shot at that event. A percentage of sales generated by both Coupeville residents and parents/fans from schools CHS is playing goes to help fund scholarships for Wolf student athletes.

When you buy, everyone wins. When you steal copyrighted photos, it comes back to bite others.

Oh, and the return of the sun? You’ll have to talk to someone else about that.

Breeanna Messner (John Fisken photos)

Kind of excited after a big play.

Kind of excited after a big play.

It did not end the way she wanted it to.

If you know anything about Breeanna Messner, it is that the Coupeville High School senior — her school’s only four-sport athlete last year (cheer, volleyball, basketball, softball) — does not give up easily.

Whether wearing the red and black for the Wolves like mom Aimee Bishop did before her, or charging up flights of steps or across muddy fields or skipping through Disney Land dressed in a tutu during a race, Messner is a true competitor.

She never backs down, and, if you poke her in the eye like one basketball player did last year, she will get up and ruthlessly drill you with back-to-back-to-back three point bombs, a small smile never leaving her face.

So for her to come out of Tuesday night’s epic five-set volleyball match with Sultan and not make it back on the floor, you knew she had to be really sick.

Whether it’s the lingering aftereffects of taking a shot to the face in a select basketball game two days before, or a reaction to a recent flu shot, she reached a point of no return after the third set Tuesday.

Not that you would have known it by her stats, because she was 13 of 13 on serves and 27 of 27 on service returns when she departed.

Whatever the problem may be, everyone hopes for a fast recovery.

You would hope for that for any Wolf athlete, but Messner, in her unassuming way, has set the gold standard the last several years for what you would like to see in anyone who pulls on a Coupeville jersey.

Before games, she is an oasis of calm, usually quietly sitting next to fellow senior Amanda Fabrizi, head bent low over her schoolwork while also monitoring the play of her JV teammates, ready to yell out encouragement.

Then she’s sprinting to the door of the gym to pick up and squeeze the life out of her beloved little cousin.

Win or lose, she lays it all on the line and I have never seen her play at anything less than full-speed. Off the court, she carries herself with a sense of grace.

You are a class act, Ms. Messner. Wolf Nation is very proud you represent us, and we hope for a speedy recovery.

UPDATE: No concussion! A Wednesday AM visit to the doctor points to a combination of a reaction to the flu shot and her potassium getting out of whack for unknown reasons.

Who’s afraid of the UW?

Not Coupeville High School fans, and here’s your chance to prove it.

Wolf Nation has been nominated, along with the Dawgs and numerous others, in Evening Magazine’s Best of Western Washington competition.

CHS is competing under Best School With the Most Spirit and has some ground to make up in the next 30+ days, as Snohomish High School has been stuffing the ballot box in early returns.

The Panthers have a sizable lead over both the U-Dub and Wazzu, with Monroe High School and Cascade High School currently rounding out the top five.

Is there a larger, more enthusiastic cheer squad in all the land than the one employed by Coupeville High School?

It seems doubtful, at least at the 1A level, as the small-school Wolves boast a team of nearly 40 young women who come committed to the cause every day.

Friday, as they prepared to board the ferry for Coupeville’s trip to play Port Townsend, they were captured on film by wandering photog John Fisken, who was nice enough to pass on these pics.

Making friends in America.

Coupeville High School has an incredibly diverse cheerleader squad.

Sylvia Arnold’s final team boasts almost 40 girls, from seasoned veterans to green rookies. And one wild card.

Continuing a recent tradition, the Wolves have a foreign exchange student on the roster, with Brazilian Sophia Jebrail picking up the pom poms for the first time in her life.

Like Iris Ryckaert and Elena Jimenez Guerra a year ago, Jebrail is experiencing that most American of sports — small town high school football — up close and personal. And while it might be new, she’s loving what she’s seen.

“I have never been a cheerleader before, it’s so nice,” Jebrail said. “What made me decide to be a cheerleader is because in Brazil we don’t have cheerleaders, so that would be a new experience that I would not have another opportunity to be.”

Making the decision easier, her host family includes a fellow Wolf cheerleader in CHS junior Camilla Rische.

At home in Sao Paulo, Brazil (“I live in a city with about a hundred thousand people, a beautiful place called Sao Joao da Boa Vista”) the 17-year-old played volleyball and handball. She’s also considering picking up a new sport in America (“Maybe I’ll play tennis on spring time.”)

The youngest of two girls (her older sister is in college), Jebrail is adjusting to her new home, which was a surprise.

“My family chose me and here I am,” Jebrail said. “In Brazil I live in a bigger city than Oak Harbor, but I like here.

“I think it`s really nice to have the experience to live in a different country with a different culture,” she added. “US is a really nice country to live.”

Jebrail boasts a surprise talent (“I loooove to play video games!”) and mixes school with fun at home (“I like to hang out with friends, go on trips and, of course, go shopping”).

After her year abroad, she intends to return to Brazil and attend college to study business administration.

While she will miss her family and their support (“They encourage me to do everything that will be good for me in the future. Everything that I want to do that’s going to make me happy and help me grow, they will support me”), Jebrail has enjoyed the start of her journey into the unknown.

“It`s nice to live here,” she said. “Before I came I thought that I wouldn’t have many things to do, but I’m having a great time, always have something to do and people here are very kind.”
