The legends will return.

Saturday brings the annual Tom Roehl Roundball Classic back to the Coupeville High School gym, and with the arrival of the hoops fundraiser comes the return of former Wolf greats.

Sherman. Bagby. Keohane. Van Velkinburgh. Stuurmans. Sellgren.

Many of them will be there, and more, as teams of Wolf alumni (with some Oak Harbor and South Whidbey players sprinkled in cause someone has to lose) vie for the trophy while raising money to help fund scholarships for CHS students.

Action runs from 10-4 tomorrow. For more info head over to:

Hoses beat guns.

Holding on to their trophy, Whidbey Island firefighters bounced their cop counterparts 52-38 Saturday night to take the 2nd annual Guns vs. Hoses benefit basketball game.

Money raised from the popular event was donated to the Goheen family, who lost twin daughters Janesah and Janeah in a Halloween-night accident. Toys were also collected for the North and Central Whidbey Holiday House.

On the scene, and firmly rooting for the fire boys, was madly clicking photographer Sherry Roberts, who was kind enough to let me share these photos.

Registration is now open for the annual Tom Roehl Round-Ball Classic, which is set for Saturday, Dec. 28.

The annual basketball tournament, which helps raise funds for scholarships for Coupeville High School students, will run from 10-4. This year it will be followed by a community bowling social at Ebey Bowl from 6-9.

Players can register as a team or as a free agent to be placed on a team. The tourney drew six teams last year and is aiming for eight this year, said event organizer Noah Roehl.

If possible, teams are encouraged to register before Dec. 20 to allow organizers to plan a fairly accurate order of tourney t-shirts.

To register, sponsor a team, contribute to the scholarship fund or find out more about former long-time Wolf coach Tom Roehl, whose memory the tourney and scholarship honor, head over to http://www.tjroehl.org.

If your questions aren’t answered there, contact Noah Roehl at 720-5662.

Why sit on a park bench when you can use it as a trampoline instead?

Jump! Jump!! Jump around!!! (John Fisken photo)

hc1It’s coming.

The biggest event of the year, the showdown for Island supremacy, the tango at Mickey Clark Field, a gridiron spectacle that will shake the heavens and the Earth.

The forces of good (Coupeville) versus the forces of evil (South Whidbey)  — OK, maybe that’s overstating it a bit — in a football rumble for possession of The Bucket. CHS holds it, SWHS cries (a lot) about it and the world awaits the outcome.

The game, set for Friday, Oct. 18 (7 PM kickoff) also happens to be Homecoming for the Wolves, amping up an already amped-up night even more.

Before the game, the entire town will turn red and black as CHS holds its third annual Homecoming parade. Take a gander at the photo above, which has all the pertinent info, and prepare your very soul for footballageddon!!

Or something like that…

henry-hoopshenry-hoops2The shock of losing South Whidbey High School boys’ basketball coach Henry Pope is still being felt across the Island.

But a group is stepping up to help raise funds for the family he left behind, and area basketball players and fans can help support the cause by taking part in a 5-on-5 hoops tournament on what would have been his birthday.

“Hoops for Henry” will tip-off 11 AM Sunday, Sept. 15 in the SWHS gym where Pope led his Falcons onto the floor.

The tourney is open to male and female players age 13 and up. Teams need to be registered by Sept. 13 and cost is $100 per team.

The pertinent info can be found above in the second photo.

To register, donate items or sponsor the tourney, call Teri Baker at (360) 632-7881.
