They’re no longer Wolves, but they continue to excel athletically. Clockwise, from left, are Mitch Pelroy, Amanda d’Almeida and Tyler King.

It was a busy week for Wolf grads playing college sports.

Three former Coupeville High School stars made big impacts on the playing field, separated by the sports they play and the states they currently reside in, but joined together by excellence.

AMANDA d’ALMEIDA:

Finally healthy again, the Carleton College sophomore played the full 90 minutes Saturday as her team upset #13 College of Saint Benedict 2-0 in an NCAA D-3 game.

It was the highest ranked school that the Knights had toppled in six seasons and lifted Carleton to 7-3-1 on the season. They’re 4-0-1 in league play.

With d’Almeida playing at center mid, the Knights out-shot their foes 12-1 in a game played in Northfield, Minnesota.

TYLER KING:

The former CHS state cross country champ continued a strong start to his junior campaign at the University of Washington.

Running in the inaugural Washington Invite Saturday, which drew half of the country’s Top 10 teams, King finished 39th out of 96 runners.

He covered the 8,000-meter course at Jefferson Park in 24 minutes, 20 seconds.

Patrick Tiernan of Villanova won in 23 minutes flat, while King’s teammate, UW All-American Aaron Nelson, claimed 5th in 23:33.

The Huskies finished 6th as a team, besting three Top 10 schools — #5 Portland, #7 Indiana and #9 Villanova.

Northern Arizona, which finished second at last year’s NCAA Championships, claimed the team title.

King will be back in action Oct. 17, when he and his teammates run at the Adidas Invitational in Wisconsin.

MITCH PELROY:

Montana Western stumbled Saturday, falling 31-14 to Carroll in a NAIA game, but Pelroy used his time on the field wisely.

He returned a kick-off 22 yards — best return by any Bulldog on the afternoon — and recorded an unassisted tackle from his position in the secondary.

It wasn’t enough, though, as Montana Western fell to 2-4, despite two epic touchdowns from quarterback Tyler Hulse.

Hulse connected on scoring strikes of 53 and 63 yards, but Carroll used a 17-point second quarter to blow the game open.

Pelroy and Co. return to action Oct. 11 when they hit the road to play Southern Oregon.

Tyler King -- even his hair looks fast.

Tyler King — even his hair looks fast.

Tyler King is running strong.

The Coupeville High School grad ran in his second event of the college cross country season Saturday, placing 12th out of 47 runners at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle.

King, a junior at the University of Washington, covered the 8K course at Lincoln Park in 24 minutes, 37 seconds.

It was the first competitive race for King and his teammates since the pride of Cow Town won the UW-Seattle U Open Aug. 29.

This time around, senior Dawg teammate Aaron Nelson, an All-American last year, won the event, breaking the tape in 24:01.

He was just the third man in 23 years to successfully defend a title at the race.

The Huskies, who came in ranked 27th in the nation, were upset in the team standings, however.

Their arch-rival from Pullman, Washington State, snapped a seven-year run of titles for U-Dub, with Fresno State and Seattle University rounding out the mens’ field.

The 14th ranked Washington women, led by champion Maddie Meyers, who beat out 50 other runners, cruised to a team title for the eighth straight season.

The Huskies return to competition Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host the inaugural Washington invitational at Jefferson Park Golf Course.

Tyler King

Tyler King

The pretenders to the crown have been banished. The once and future King has returned.

Healthy once again after redshirting during track season last year, University of Washington junior cross country runner Tyler King bolted out of the pack Friday, winning the men’s individual title at the UW-Seattle U Open.

The former Coupeville High School supernova covered a 4.5-mile course at Magnuson Park in 22 minutes, six seconds, claiming the title by three seconds.

Among the runners he beat was U-Dub teammate Aaron Nelson, an All-American last year.

The Huskies, who are trying to get back to the NCAA Championships as a team for the first time since 2009, were ranked 27th in the Top-30 preseason poll by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The UW women, who have reached nationals 17 of the last 19 years, are ranked 15th.

After a week-long training camp on the coast, the Huskies will next compete Sept. 20 in Seattle at the Sundodger Invitational.

Chloe Gardner

Chloe Gardner

Perhaps the best “Wolf that Never Was” is officially Whatcom’s best.

Chloe Gardner, who moved away from Coupeville with her family when she was in the third grade, was selected Friday as The Bellingham Herald’s All-Whatcom County Female Athlete of the Year.

As a senior at Nooksack Valley High School, Gardner won a 1A state wrestling title at 145 pounds, helped lead the Pioneers to a fifth place finish in the state softball tourney and advanced to state in cross country, a sport she mainly used as a way to get ready for her “real” sports.

I bring this up because if her parents, Wade and Trina, had not chosen to move the family off The Rock in 2004 (a time when Trina was the #1 barista at Miriam’s Espresso), Chloe would have been doing her butt-kickin’ in the red and black.

Albeit in different sports, since CHS doesn’t field cross country or wrestling teams.

But that’s fine. Gardner is a superb athlete. She would have adapted.

Drop in volleyball or soccer for cross country and basketball for wrestling and we’re good to go.

Except…

If we had a time machine, we could go back and convince a third-grader to convince her family not to move, thereby changing the very course of Wolf athletics!

Seriously, who wants to get working on this idea?!?! Anyone, anyone … Bueller, Bueller?

OK, fine, be that way. Personally, I thought the idea had merit.

Tyler King: American Badass

Tyler King: American Badass (Angelo Comeaux photo)

After battling illness for most of the season, Tyler King will now have to wait to see whether he gets one more cross country race.

The Coupeville High School grad, now a redshirt sophomore at the University of Washington, finished 97th (out of 187 runners) at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento Friday morning.

He and his Husky team placed 9th in the 27-team battle. Stanford and Oregon claimed the top two spots, earning guaranteed berths at the national championship meet Nov. 23.

Washington will now have to wait to see if it can claim one of the 13 at-large berths when the full 31-team bracket is announced. Last year the Huskies missed an invite by one slim spot.

Running 10,000 meters for the first time this season, King covered the course at Sacramento State’s Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in 31 minutes, 56 seconds. Edward Cheserek of Oregon won in 29:35.
