David Ebersole

One for the road.

The Coupeville School District will host an open house Wednesday, Oct. 30 for David Ebersole.

The longtime administrator — popular with parents, school employees, and students — retires from his post as Coupeville Elementary School Principal the next day.

The event will go down in the commons at the middle/high school from 3:00-5:00 PM.

Ebersole will also be recognized at the school board meeting, set for 5:30 PM that same night.

That meeting, held in the Kathleen Anderson Boardroom, was originally scheduled for Oct. 31, but was just recently bumped up a night.

A long-standing business on Whidbey Island is calling it a day.

Flyer’s Restaurant and Brewery, which sits on State Route 20 in Oak Harbor, announced its closure Wednesday on social media.

The statement from management:

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that Flyers Restaurant and Brewery has made the very difficult decision to cease operating permanently.

We want to thank our countless guests and all of the great employees we have had here over the years; your support helped us bring award winning food, beer and service for nearly two decades here in Oak Harbor.

We genuinely appreciate all of you and know that without this continued support, none of this would have been possible.

On behalf of Jason and the Tritt family, I want to say thank you for everything!

We wish you all Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Tony Savoy
Owner/Brewer

David Ebersole, seen with teacher Jen Mostafavinassab, has been the backbone of Coupeville Elementary School for many years.

David Ebersole, one of the best-liked school administrators on Whidbey Island, appears to be calling it a career.

The longtime Coupeville Elementary School principal has tendered his resignation, which will be effective Oct. 31.

The move was approved by the school board Thursday at its monthly meeting.

Near the end of the meeting, Coupeville Schools Superintendent Shannon Leatherwood took a moment to praise Ebersole.

Dave, the impact you have made on this district is huge and great, and I hear that from everybody,” she said.

“You leave really difficult shoes to fill. Thank you for your service.”

Ebersole will be honored by the board at its October meeting.

Joel Norris (left) and Willie Smith have been a dynamic duo in the press box for what seems a lifetime. (David Svien photo)

And now, the end is near
And so, I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full

In the afterglow of Friday night’s football game between Coupeville and visiting Annie Wright, the transcendent voice of Frank Sinatra crackled from the speakers, each word carrying across the prairie.

Upstairs in the press box, a lone figure remained, as Willie Smith tidied up, while below the Wolf faithful celebrated a 51-6 victory.

The driving force of CHS athletics for the past three decades is no longer the school’s athletic director, having retired from the position after last season.

I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Smith is still teaching, at least for one more year, possibly two, and remains the peppiest man in the empire.

Friday night, possibly for the final time, he was on the mic, offering hot takes and frequent jokes, and spinning the hits, from the Backstreet Boys to AC/DC, Ozzy to John Denver.

He and scoreboard operator/cookie maker extraordinaire Joel Norris have been a constant in the booth since before I returned to covering prep sports full-time in 2012.

From the little wooden box full of bees (some dead, many alive) to the current cushier surroundings (if you ignore the annoying post in the middle of the press box window), Willie Smith’s voice has been the soundtrack to Friday Night Lights for a generation.

Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption

He missed one game most seasons, thanks to the lure of hunting season, but otherwise rocked the mic at almost every step of the way.

Whether jabbing the student section for not being properly enthused during early season games, leading the charge on “and that’s a Wolf FIRST DOWN!!” or going introspective with his immortal call of “Balls … balls … balls,” Willie Smith is Coupeville football.

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

But now, he says this might be it, and talks of handing off the mic to a successor, perhaps as soon as the next home game.

The new guy may be a legend in the making. Could become the voice of his own generation.

But he won’t be Willie.

Time moves on, and the final link in the holy trinity of Coupeville coaches who I came up with during my early days of Whidbey sports reporting may be joining Ron Bagby and Randy King on the sidelines.

If so, it will take some getting used to.

Will the new guy segue from Miley Cyrus to Cypress Hill to Guns ‘n Roses without skipping a beat?

Will he bring candy to the press box as we inch closer to Halloween?

No, this is super important. WILL HE BRING CANDY TO THE PRESS BOX????

And will he gaze out across a fog-swept prairie, impish grin on his face, after coming up with the perfect call at a moment’s notice, tip back his water bottle, then tell us, “I am on fire tonight, boys!!”

We can only hope.

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all, and I stood tall
And did it my way

Steve King

He’s off to the lands of the pineapple and never-ending sunset.

Coupeville School District Superintendent Steve King ends his six-year tenure in Central Whidbey this week, with a teaching job in Hawaii next on the docket.

As he prepares to depart, he issued the following farewell:

Hello Coupeville Community!

I hope this message finds you well.

Tonight’s School District board meeting will be my final meeting and the end of my tenure as your Superintendent.

As I leave Coupeville to relocate closer to family and return to the classroom, I want to express my gratitude for your support and kindness over the past six years.

Becoming your Superintendent in 2018 was an absolute honor and a career dream come true.

While many unforeseen challenges during my time here took their toll, there is no place I would have rather been than in this incredible Coupeville community.

I have had the honor and privilege of serving in the most supportive community I have ever been a part of.

It is a career highlight to have been able to serve those who serve us over the past decade in both Oak Harbor and Coupeville.

It was an incredible honor being a part of our hardworking and dedicated staff, who are committed to serving Coupeville students.

Most importantly, I have loved being a part of the lives of our students!

I have been able to serve thousands of students in my career in multiple school districts, and the Coupeville students are second to no one.

Thank you all for your continued support and ongoing efforts to support our schools and students.

I have learned so much from so many wonderful people in Coupeville, and many of you have inspired me more than you’ll ever know.

I wish everyone in Coupeville, especially the students, the very best, and I am truly grateful for the time I was able to serve in this beautiful and amazing place.

With respect and gratitude!

Steve King
