Doctors believe Tyler Cermak’s brain tumor is benign and surgery will not be required.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who has suffered seizures in the past, was discovered to have the tumor when he went in for a checkup after suffering a possible concussion during the spring football scrimmage with Lakeside.

Cermak and his parents met with doctors Wednesday, and he discussed the results on Facebook:

So, got some good news today.

My tumor is most likely benign and is really small compared to others.

The docs don’t think it’ll grow any bigger. I will be having MRI’s over the next few months just to keep eyes on it.

I will be taking medication to control the seizures.

If that medication doesn’t work I’ll take another. If the second doesn’t work than I will have to have surgery.

Unless it grows, It’s not likely I will have surgery.

Cermak plans to remain with the Wolf football team as a manager.

It all ends in 14 days.

Two weeks from today, summer vacation comes to a screachin’ halt for a chunk of Coupeville High School athletes, as Wednesday, Aug. 20 marks the first official day of practice for Wolf football players.

Volleyball, tennis and soccer players open practice Monday, Aug. 25, and the 2014-2015 school athletic year kicks off Friday, Sept. 5 with a home football game between CHS and those dastardly, college-coach-hirin’ interlopers from South Whidbey.

Tyler Cermak

A possible concussion during last weekend’s summer football scrimmage may have been a good thing for Tyler Cermak.

The Coupeville High School sophomore went in for a check-up after last weekend’s match-up with Lakeside, and while doctors checked him for concussion symptoms, they found something far worse.

An MRI showed Cermak has a tumor on the left front part of his brain.

It’s not known yet whether the tumor is cancerous or benign. Cermak will head to Children’s Hospital in Seattle Wednesday with his parents to plan for surgery.

“Thank God he was on the field that day and got that concussion so he could get tested,” said CHS football coach Tony Maggio.

While the tumor will keep Cermak off the playing field, he plans on staying with the Wolves as a team manager.

For CHS fans who want to send him best wishes, Tyler can be contacted at 17thargrave@coupeville.k12.wa.us.

“I could use the support,” Cermak said. “Thank you!”

The 2014 edition of the CHS Wolves.

The 2014 edition of the CHS Wolves.

It was football, but of a different sort.

With the start of a new high school season six weeks away, the Wolves welcomed 3A Lakeside to town Saturday afternoon for a scrimmage.

The bleachers ended up two thirds full, a few plays brought a buzz from the crowd and both teams got to work on plays under live conditions, even if players were wearing shorts, the scoreboard was turned off and coaches were grouped in the backfield.

Oh, and also, the sun was blazing away, a far cry from normal conditions at Mickey Clark Field.

Trust me, first-time fans, come back in mid-October, when the fog attacks and the rain slices down sideways. That, my friends, is true Cow Town football weather.

This was mid-summer vacation weather, which allowed for the gathered to work on their sun burns while watching Lathom Kelley and Wiley Hesselgrave administer whiplash to Lakeside runners.

Josh Bayne picked off a pass, while coming within a fingertip of a second interception, team captain Carson Risner came up out of a scrum ready to rumble with the entire Lakeside defensive line like it was the playoffs and the smallest player on the field had the biggest hit.

That was incoming freshman Cameron Toomey-Stout, who came flying up the left sideline and laid into a Lakeside receiver as he took his first step after snagging a short pass.

One of the few times Coupeville stopped Lakeside from breaking big runs down the sideline — something the Wolves will need to work on before they open their season Sept. 5 against South Whidbey — it got a roar from the crowd and Toomey-Stout was jumped ‘n thumped by his teammates as he headed back to his position.
