Let the wild animals come out to play.

It’ll be a wolf vs. Kodiak bear rumble this Friday night at Mickey Clark Field, as Coupeville welcomes an unfamiliar foe to town for Homecoming.

The opponent in question is Cascade (Leavenworth), which is traveling 142 miles from 10190 Chumstick Highway down to 6 S. Main Street and the football field which resides there.

So forget about your Friday Harbor’s and La Conner’s for a moment and meet the new kids in town (for a day at least).

The first bit of info about Cascade (Leavenworth) is that you shouldn’t confuse it with Cascade (Everett), which used to be a regular rival of Oak Harbor and often traveled to Whidbey.

Or with Cascade Christian, which Coupeville used to play every once in awhile.

No, this Cascade is in the 1A classification, and plays out of the Caribou Trail League in Eastern Washington, where it’s joined by Cashmere, Quincy, Chelan, and Omak.

This year’s version of the Kodiaks, who sit at 3-3 after winning back-to-back games, have 44 players on their roster — about double of what the Wolves have to offer — and rep a student body which outnumbers 2B Coupeville 439-275.

Cascade opened with 21-18 and 43-12 losses to Naches Valley and King’s, respectively, then rebounded to drill Brewster 42-22.

After a 55-54 heartbreaker against Chelan in their league opener, the Kodiaks have polished off Quincy (42-0) and Cashmere (24-19) to arrive at this point.

Playing in scarlet and grey, their 44-man roster contains no names I recognize way over here on the opposite end of the state.

That being said, Will Beibesheimer and Gunnar Balzer are just fun to say, so they have that going for them, which is nice.

I do know the Kodiaks have a strong history, having advanced to state 13 times, with the most-recent trip being in 2014.

Cascade is 12-13 in state gridiron playoff games, with its best showing coming back in 1995, when it won three games before falling 44-30 to Ridgefield in the 1A state title game.

And one last intriguing note about the Kodiaks.

Their coach, Dominique Coffin, pictured above, is also the school’s Athletic Director, having returned to his alma mater around 2015.

What’s intriguing – to me, at least — is how close his name is to one of Coupeville’s players, junior Dominic Coffman, who’s scored five touchdowns for the Wolves this season.

So, Friday night, Dom Coffin meets Dom Coffman.

Two Doms enter, one exits with a win. Who will be the true … Dominator???

Yes, I’m easily amused. Why do you ask?

Coupeville football crunched La Conner for a second time this season, winning 40-0 Friday night. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Back on the field, back in the win column.

A week after cancelling a game due to a lack of healthy players, the Coupeville High School football team travelled to La Conner Friday and blitzed the winless Braves for a second time this season.

Pounding away on the ground, the Wolves ran away with a 40-0 win, keeping alive hopes of sharing the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

Coupeville sits at 2-1 in conference action, 2-3 overall, a half game back of Friday Harbor (2-0, 3-4), and two up on La Conner (0-3, 0-4).

While the Wolves play non-conference foe Cascade (Leavenworth) Oct. 22 during Coupeville’s Homecoming game, La Conner will travel to Friday Harbor that night.

CHS then wraps its regular season Thursday, Oct. 28, when it hosts Friday Harbor in what should be a showdown between teams with league marks of 2-1 and 3-0, respectively.

Win that finale, and Coupeville shares the crown with the Wolverines.

Friday’s clash in La Conner was much like the first time the two schools met in late September, when Coupeville waxed the Braves 51-0 at Mickey Clark Field.

The Wolves moved the ball with ease, scored with ease, and never allowed La Conner to get much of anything going.

Forcing and recovering fumbles on the first two Braves possessions, Coupeville didn’t allow their foes to get a first down until the final minute of the opening quarter.

And that only happened because of a questionable face mask call on the Wolves.

Overall, La Conner spent most of the first half on its own side of the field, rarely generating positive yardage on consecutive plays.

CHS, which also had two first-half interceptions, including a pick-six from Daylon Houston, added to a season in which La Conner, a traditional heavyweight, has yet to score a point in four games.

The Braves are looking at a 175-0 deficit with two games remaining on their schedule.

By contrast, Coupeville’s offense quickly found its groove after a week off, punching in five touchdowns in the first half, with Scott Hilborn and Dominic Coffman each scoring twice on runs.

Jonathan Valenzuela added another run to pay dirt, before Houston, who also walloped four PAT tries through the uprights, picked La Conner’s QB off less than a minute before halftime.

The ball securely in his hands, Houston sliced ‘n diced his way downfield, taking the ball back 70+ yards to cap the first-half scoring.

With a running clock in place after the break, and Coupeville taking its foot off the gas pedal, the Wolves didn’t add to their already-impressive point total in the second half.

Valenzuela did pick off a La Conner pass in the third quarter, however, giving his squad five takeaways in the game.

The game that wasn’t, then was, is now no more again.

Coupeville High School’s clash Saturday at home against 1A power Meridian has been cancelled a little over 24 hours before kickoff.

Injuries, not Covid, are the culprit.

“I just received communication from our football staff that we’ve had some mid-week injuries that leaves us with just 13 healthy bodies for this weekend’s game,” said CHS Athletic Director Willie Smith.

“Unfortunately, we are going to need to cancel tomorrow’s game.”

The match-up had only recently been added to the schedule, after Meridian’s league game with Lynden Christian was wiped from the schedule when the latter school switched to remote learning in the wake of Covid outbreaks.

Coupeville had an opening on its schedule, and moved in to replace the Lyncs, but are now also sidelined.

The Wolves, 1-3 on the season, return to action, hopefully, next Friday, Oct. 15, when they travel to La Conner for a Northwest 2B/1B League bout.

Mikey Robinett (45) and Co. play three of their next four games at home.

The dream isn’t dead, but it’s on life support.

Coupeville’s bid to win its first high school football league title since 1990 took a major hit Friday night.

Run over by host Friday Harbor to a 32-6 tune, the Wolves drop to 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-3 overall.

Coupeville sits a game back of Friday Harbor (2-0, 3-2) and one up on La Conner (0-2, 0-3), with two conference tilts remaining for each team.

CHS travels to La Conner Oct. 15, then the Braves make the jaunt to Friday Harbor Oct. 22.

The season finale, bumped up to a Thursday, goes down in Coupeville Oct. 28, when the Wolves get a second crack at Friday Harbor.

With La Conner in a down season — it lost 63-0 to Friday Harbor and 51-0 to Coupeville the first time around — it seems likely the Braves, barring a miracle, are headed to an 0-4 league campaign.

If so, Friday Harbor would have clinched at least a tie for the NWL title coming in to the final week, though a Coupeville win on Senior Night would make them co-champs.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Friday’s game started more than an hour late, thanks to ferry issues, and that seemed to be a sign of things to come for Coupeville.

Trailing 32-0, the Wolves finally got on the board when Logan Downes plunged in on a quarterback keeper late in the fourth quarter.

With the ball in his hands, the sophomore gunslinger went right, then, dodging a would-be tackler, cut back to the left and ran over a dude to put six on the board.

It was his second TD of the season, moving him up into a third-place tie with Tim Ursu, with the duo chasing Dominic Coffman (3) and Scott Hilborn (6).

Coupeville went for a two-point conversion, but Downes ensuing pass was knocked down by Friday Harbor’s Dylan Roberson.

The Wolves had their opportunities Friday, and, if they can correct some mistakes, could put up a strong fight in the rematch.

“It was a tough, physical game,” said Coupeville coach Marcus Carr. “We moved the ball well, but had drives stopped by very untimely penalties and a few turnovers.”

The Wolves get a big test in their next game, and a break from league play, as they host 1A Meridian (3-2) Saturday, Oct. 9.

Kickoff is 7 PM.

The game is a late addition to Coupeville’s schedule, as Meridian’s original opponent, Lynden Christian, is having Covid issues.
