Island rivalry clash postponed

Suddenly, Saturday is open.

Hours after the Coupeville High School boys basketball team postponed both of its weekend games, the Wolf girls have done the same with one half of their planned back-to-back.

While the CHS girls, unlike their male counterparts, still play tonight at Mount Vernon Christian, Saturday’s trip to Langley to face South Whidbey is off the board … for now.

“We will look to reschedule at a later date,” said Coupeville Athletic Director Willie Smith.

That means, for now at least, when the Wolves finish Friday’s tilts, the plan is for no more games until Jan. 4.

CMS girls hoop it up in 2022

They don’t have coaches (yet), but they do have a schedule.

Coupeville Middle School girls basketball starts practice Monday, Jan. 24, with an eight-game season set to run Feb. 10-Mar. 10.

The sport is open to students in grades six through eight.

And, like the CMS boys — who wrap their season this week — makeup of teams will be based on talent and not age.

 

The schedule as of today, with all home games tipping at 3:15 PM:

Thurs-Feb. 10 — South Whidbey
Tues-Feb. 15 — @Northshore Christian
Thurs-Feb. 17 — @Sultan
Tues-Feb. 22 — @Granite Falls
Thur-Feb. 24 — King’s
Tues-Mar. 1 — Lakewood
Tues-Mar. 8 — Sultan
Thur-Mar. 10 — @South Whidbey

“They are in it to win it!”

Savina Wells celebrated her 15th birthday in appropriate fashion — as a winner.

The Coupeville High School freshman was one of 10 players to score Tuesday, as the Wolf varsity girls basketball team obliterated host Concrete 59-25.

The victory lifts CHS to 3-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-1 overall, heading into a big showdown at Mount Vernon Christian Friday night.

As the Wolves prep for the weekend — they also have a non-conference clash at South Whidbey Saturday — they sit a half-game off the lead in the NWL.

Defending champs La Conner are 4-0 in league action, 7-0 overall.

Tuesday’s road trip to the wilds of Concrete went off about as well as possible, with the Wolves popping the net from the word go.

Maddie Georges sank two shots from behind the three-point arc in the first quarter, part of an eight-point opening for the junior guard, while Ja’Kenya Hoskins controlled the paint.

Up 17-2 at the first break, Coupeville stretched the margin out to 31-7 by the half, then 50-16 heading into the final frame.

It was the sort of well-balanced, everybody-contributes effort CHS coach Megan Smith is thrilled to see.

“We have a solid team! They are in it to win it,” she said.

“And I am beyond impressed with all the strides I have seen them make so far,” Smith added. “It’s only up from here.”

Shaw and Lyla Stuurmans have had plenty to celebrate.

Georges paced the Wolves with a game-high 13, including a trio of three-balls, while Audrianna Shaw knocked down 12 in support.

Izzy Wells (8), Hoskins (6), Carolyn Lhamon (5), Nezi Keiper (4), Savina Wells (4), Gwen Gustafson (4), Abby Mulholland (2), and Lyla Stuurmans (1) also scored, with freshman Katie Marti also seeing floor time.

 

JV sidelined:

Concrete only has one team, so Coupeville’s younger stars had the night off.

Shaw scorches, Wolves roar

Top of the league.

That’s where the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team finds itself after pounding host Orcas Island 36-19 Saturday afternoon.

The team’s second Northwest 2B/1B League victory in less than 24 hours, it lifts the Wolves to 2-0 in conference play, 3-1 overall.

It also puts Coupeville in a tie with defending NWL champs La Conner (2-0, 5-0).

And last, but not least, it leaves first-year varsity head coach Megan Smith smiling from ear to ear.

“We played really well today,” she said. “Our defense was phenomenal!

“They worked so hard on it in practice this week, and it really showed today,” Smith added. “They are really coming together as a team, and that has been so fun to watch!”

Fresh off a home win against Darrington Friday, Coupeville came out on fire during its first road trip of the season.

Senior Audrianna Shaw, who went off for 20 points — best performance by a Wolf player, girl or boy, varsity or JV, this season — had the range early, and never relented.

Banging home the first of four three balls on the day, she poured in seven points in the game’s first eight minutes, sparking CHS to a 14-5 lead at the opening break.

From there, the Wolves steadily pulled away, pushing the margin to 23-7 at the half, and 34-15 by the end of the third quarter.

Shaw, who outscored Orcas by herself, played like her coach did back when she wore a CHS uniform — bringing the offensive heat on every play.

“Audri couldn’t miss today!,” Smith said. “She had a great game all around.”

Audrianna Shaw outscored Orcas 20-19 Saturday.

Shaw had plenty of help, as six of her nine teammates also lit up the scoreboard.

Abby Mulholland and Izzy Wells knocked down four points apiece to lead the support crew, while Savina Wells notched three.

Maddie Georges (2), Gwen Gustafson (2), and Carolyn Lhamon (1) rounded out the scoring, with Lyla Stuurmans, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, and Katie Marti also seeing floor time.

Coupeville has a busy week ahead, with three road games in a five-day stretch.

The Wolves have league tilts at Concrete (0-2, 1-2) Dec. 14 and Mount Vernon Christian (1-1, 3-1) Dec. 17, as well as a non-conference rumble at South Whidbey Dec. 18.

Then they’re off until Jan. 4, when La Conner travels to Whidbey.

Wolf JV girls shred Vikings

They shuffled the roster, and lit up the scoreboard.

Coupeville High School swing players Gwen Gustafson and Lyla Stuurmans made their first JV appearance Saturday, combining with Madison McMillan to form a formidable scoring machine.

Paced by the trio’s combined 26 points, the Wolves led from start to finish, polishing off host Orcas Island 41-23.

The win puts Coupeville’s young guns at 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-2 overall.

Saturday’s clash looked more like a nailbiter than a blowout after one quarter, with the Wolves clinging to just a 4-2 lead at the first break.

That changed, and quickly, as McMillan poured in eight points in the second frame, sparking CHS on a 17-9 run.

Also coming up big was Katie Marti, who banked in a three-ball en route to tallying five points during the game-busting streak.

Up 21-11 at the half, the Wolves stretched the lead out to 35-15 by the end of the third quarter, then coasted in for the victory.

McMillan paced Coupeville with 10 points, while Gustafson and Stuurmans recorded eight apiece.

Also getting in the book were Marti (5), Brooklyn Thayer (4), Desi Ramirez-Vasquez (2), Bryley Gilbert (2), and Kayla Arnold (2).

It was the first game for Thayer, and the fab frosh made an immediate impact on the boards as well.

Jada Heaton, Skylar Parker, Edie Bittner, Mia Farris, and Yodnum Nakakul all saw floor time for the Wolves, who have a bit of a break in their schedule.

Coupeville’s next foe, Concrete, doesn’t have a JV team, similar to what happened with Darrington Friday night.

That means the young Wolves are off the floor until next Friday, Dec. 17, when CHS travels to Mount Vernon Christian.

The JV also plays Dec. 18 — on the road at South Whidbey — then all Coupeville teams don’t play games again until Jan. 4.
