"Remember, the ladies love the long ball!"

That moment when you throw so hard, your arm almost pops off.

"Ball ... get in MY GLOVE!!"

“Ball … get in MY GLOVE!!”

"Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac... It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's in the hole!

“Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former ball boy, now, about to hit a homer. It looks like a mirac… It’s over the fence! It’s over the fence! It’s over the fence!”

Now, the whole point of being a ninja is, no one sees you.

I sort of think the Central Whidbey “Black Ninjas” baseball squad is missing the point of their name, since their images were easily captured on film by travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

But we’ll let it go, for now, at least.

The game in question was a Majors contest between the Black Ninjas, who were protecting the honor of Central Whidbey, and their opponents, the presumably dastardly North Whidbey Mariners.

Brief sponsor plug — the Ninjas wear the name of Iverson Insurance across their chests, and since the brother/sister combo of Matt Iverson and Mimi Johnson that owns said insurance agency also advertises on Coupeville Sports, I thought I’d make a big deal about it.

Shameless, I know…

Anyway, if you like the pics above and want to see more (and possibly purchase some for hanging on the wall or sending to grandma), head over to the link below.

And remember, a percentage of sales always goes to fund college scholarships for Coupeville High School athletes. Which these ninjas may one day be.

Circle of life and all.

Although pitcher Hunter Smith only allowed a few hits Thursday, the Sedro-Woolley squad was able to exact revenge on the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth team, squeaking out a one-run victory on its home turf.

The game was very close all the way through.

In the second inning, the ‘Cats brought walked batter James Besaw home with a sac bunt by Thomas Anderson and an RBI single from Joey Lippo.

Improved pitching from the Sedro squad stranded Anderson and Lippo.

Smith sat the Sedro batters down in the second and the ‘Cats came back to the plate and managed to generate two more runs on a combination of passed balls and trickery.

On a walk to Cory Roberts, Mackenzie Nuanez (who occupied third) took a huge step towards home while Roberts rounded first at full speed.

On the ensuing toss to second base, Nuanez ran home. Both runners safe.

That would be the end of the scoring for the ‘Cats, and the Sedro squad posted two more in the fifth, making the score 4-3, and that is how the game ended as both pitchers put on a strikeout clinic in the closing innings.

Only 10 hits were spread across both teams in the pitcher’s duel, with Smith (who was robbed, again, of a base hit by a diving Sedro Wolley shortstop) pitching a complete game allowing only six hits.

“We had some mental errors on the base paths and the lack of hitting didn’t help, either,” said Oak Harboe manager Pete Richter. “Something to work on next practice.”

The present and the future of CHS baseball.

The present and the future of CHS baseball.

Batter up.

Batter up.

Swing away.

Swing away.

They were bundled up, but they were playing baseball.

Spring has come to Whidbey — sort of — as Coupeville High School baseball players hit the field Saturday to give back to the next generation of ball players.

Working with players from Central Whidbey Little League, where many of the current Wolves grew up playing baseball and won a state title in 2010, the high schoolers held a skills clinic on their diamond.

Spring approaches.

Spring approaches.

Are you ready to swing into action?

Are you ready to swing into action?

Joe Lippo is a little excited.

Taking a break from possibly agonizing over the loss to injury of Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg (he’s a huge hockey and Red Wings fan), Lippo is already mentally planning for the upcoming youth baseball seasons.

He recently fired off this note and the photos above.

Wanna know whats going to start soon? Baseball.

Wanna know something else?

8th graders are showing up at the high school open gym in growing numbers.

Seen at this morning’s practice were Joey Lippo, Nick Etzell, and rumor has it that Julian Welling has been making appearances.

If all goes right, Coupeville Juniors should have a pretty solid team this year, provided they can grab some of the younger 9th graders from the mix.

Add some Kyle Rockwell, a dash of Jake Pease, a couple of Ecks, and mash it all up with some Clay Reilly, and the team looks mighty fine…

No one tell him that’s it supposed to start snowing today.

It’s never too early to think about spring.

The Central Whidbey Little League will be holding sign-ups Feb. 8-9 for the upcoming baseball and softball seasons.

Both days will be at the Coupeville High School/Middle School gym, with hours set for 9-11 AM (Feb. 8) and 12-1 (Feb. 9).

The league is open to kids ages 5-14 who live inside Coupeville School District boundaries.

A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign up a child, and they need an original birth certificate and three proofs of residency from Feb. 1, 2013 to Jan. 31, 2014.

These can be things such as a driver’s license, rent/mortgage receipt or utility bill, and need to have the parent or legal guardian’s name and address on them.

Please bring originals and a copy of each proof.

Cost per player is:

T-Ball — $55
Rookies — $65
Minors — $70
Majors — $75
Juniors — $80

Tryouts will be held on two dates (Feb. 15 and 23) to allow coaches a chance to evaluate players and fill teams.
