AnnaBelle Whitefoot

AnnaBelle Whitefoot gets ready to tattoo the tennis ball.

Not our fight.

That was my first thought when the Everett Herald posted their polls for voters to help pick their prep athletes of the year.

They don’t care about us, why should we care about them?

From the moment Coupeville High School left the 1A/2A Cascade Conference and joined the all-new 1A Olympic League two years ago, Cow Town has been dead to the Herald.

They still report on two-thirds of Whidbey Island, running scores and such for Oak Harbor and South Whidbey.

But, in their minds, you might as well set the middle of the Island, the county seat, the heart of government and farming, on fire, and let it burn to the ground.

Course, if that happened, they still wouldn’t write about it, cause we’re dead to them.

So, when they posted their nominee list — with one girl and boy from each of the schools they choose to cover — no Makana Stone, no Wiley Hesselgrave.

Cause Coupeville is dead to the Herald.

Except, we can still be a royal pain in their ass. Just like we were a couple years back when we torpedoed one or two of their other polls.

There’s that.

And we can do it in two ways.

One, by rallying support behind Oak Harbor’s nominated athletes — AnnaBelle Whitefoot and Dyllan Harris — and maybe helping one Whidbey Island school shaft the Herald’s beloved ATM and King’s.

And, secondly, by dropping a hail-storm of emails on Herald prep sports bigwig David Krueger, just to remind him Wolf Nation is still here, no matter how much he tries to pretend we’re not.

So, let’s do this thing.

To vote for Whitefoot, jump over to:

Nominees for the Class of 2016 Kristi Bartz Memorial Girls Athlete of the Year

To vote for Harris, jump over to:

Nominees for the Class of 2016 Boys Athlete of the Year

To harass the Herald and ask why they refuse to cover Coupeville, send emails (by the millions) to:

Wolf leaders (l to r) Joel Walstad, Bayne and Aaron Wright

That’s how it’s done, Everett Herald.

After being ignored by the big city papers when they nominated their top players for week one of the high school football season, Coupeville’s talented combo of Joel Walstad and Josh Bayne got some respect Monday from a more highly-attuned source.

The Wolf duo, who shredded South Whidbey Friday night to bring “The Bucket” back to Cow Town after a year of exile in Langley, were named to the Northwest Elite Index Elite Performers list.

Walstad chucked the ball for 252 yards and three touchdowns, while Bayne scampered for 218 more on the ground, punching in a pair of scores, including the game winner, in the 35-28 victory.

That landed them on a list that included players from high profile schools like Lynden, King’s, Marysville-Pilchuck and Tumwater.

Then bookmark the site, cause this probably won’t be the only time Coupeville’s finest pop up there.

Breeanna Messner

Ben Etzell (Sylvia Arnold photo)

If it’s Tuesday, it must be time to mess with the Everett Herald again.

The newspaper that’s most fond of massacring the names of Coupeville High School athletes (respect the memory of Taya Boonscara … wait, isn’t her name really Taya Boonstra?) has shocked us all by allowing two Wolves to be nominated in their Athlete of the Year voting.

Recent CHS grads Breeanna Messner (volleyball, cheer, basketball, softball) and Ben Etzell (tennis, baseball) are in the running, along with all the “big name” athletes from athletic powers like ATM and Jackson.

Which can only mean one thing — time for Whidbey Island to open a can of whoop-ass on their poll … again.

We’ve done it before. We’ll do it again.

Now, they have set up their poll so you can’t just sit there and click the vote button 10,000 times in an hour, which just means you have to get more creative. There are always ways around vote stifling.

And, of course, we might get a repeat of the Lakewood incident, where someone rigged the system to shoot votes to Lakewood players when ever anyone voted for a Coupeville kid.

We shall see.

But, for now, at least, we believe in the “Friday Night Lights” mantra, “Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.”

Let the can openin’ begin!!

Nick Streubel (Sharon Edwards photos)

Nick Streubel (Sharon Edwards photos)

You can say it. Awwwww...

You can say it. Awwwww…

The Big Hurt and Coach V hug it out.

The Big Hurt and Coach V hug it out.

We are at war.

It is a war fought for every small town, for every speck on the map, for every under-appreciated, overlooked, easily-dismissed football program clawing for a bit of respect.

We beat the big city boys one time before. We will do it again.

Wolf Nation, and all of its supporters, whether they are Wildcats or Falcons or go by any of a million other names, do not bow down to superior numbers. Not now, not ever.

Marysville came for us, with a population of 62,402 and we blistered their fannies until they crawled away.

Why should a town of 1,865 people be worried by Lakewood, which has about 4,000 less people in their city limits than Marysville?

This battle, which, on the surface, is a fight to honor Coupeville High School senior lineman Nick Streubel as the Everett Herald Defensive Player of the Year, is about more.

Streubel, AKA The Big Hurt, AKA the guy who bear-hugs his mom Nanette after every game, has been shafted for two years running by a decision that made CHS football players unable to be considered for All-League honors when Cascade Conference coaches voted.

So, unlike Lakewood’s Jeff Harrison — a very good player who will have to accept second place — Streubel needs this. Coupeville needs this.

The Big Hurt battled through injury, through triple-teaming, chop-blocking opponents, and dominated in a way few players do. He changed the flow of games. He made coaches design entirely new game plans.

If you vote for Nick, if you spread the word and the link, if you fuel fires for him from Atlanta to Belgium, if Whidbey (North, South and Central) come together as one to lift him to this win, it will be justice. It will be right.

Let Mr. Rockne play us out…

Well, boys … I haven’t a thing to say.  Played a great game … all of you. Great game.

I guess we just can’t expect to win ‘em all.

But sometime, when the team is up against it — and the breaks are beating the boys — tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for The Big Hurt…

I don’t know where I’ll be then, but I’ll know about it, and I’ll be happy.

At my signal, unleash Hell:

Defensive MVP Nick Streubel gives mom Nanette a hug.

He hugs his mom. How can you not vote for The Big Hurt?

They will fear us. Oh yes, they will fear us.

Wolf Nation brought home 2,000+ votes for Jake Tumblin when the Everett Herald held its Prep Football Player of the Week poll recently.

More votes than there are people in the town of Coupeville, and we beat the crud out of Marysville and their 60,000+ population.

And now they want to tempt us again.

A poll to pick the prep football Defensive Player of the Year went up tonight (while I was detained at my real job) and the man, the myth, the legend — CHS senior lineman Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel — currently sits in second place (out of 11 contenders).

If Marysville couldn’t keep us down, ain’t no way Sultan is winning this one.

Fire up the voting machine, Betty Sue! We’re going to war!! I wanna see 3,000 votes this time!!!

Go! Go! Vote! Vote! Here:
