Melanie Navarro can’t be contained by your puny walls.

Delighting her home fans, the Coupeville High School slugger cleared the fence for the second time this season, cracking a thunderous three-run homerun to spark the Wolf JV to a 12-11 win over visiting Oak Harbor.

The victory lifts the CHS diamond queens to 2-1, with their triumphs coming against 3A and 2A foes.

Not bad for a lil’ 2B school.

Not that either Wolf softball squad, varsity or JV, enters games worrying about the size of the school their opponents come from.

As always, the Coupeville JV went into play with their eyes firmly set on nabbing a win, something coach Katrina McGranahan loves to see.

“Oak Harbor was a great competitor, and it was awesome to play someone who challenges us,” she said. “Without that challenge we wouldn’t know where we need to work.”

The Wolves rang up five runs in the bottom of the first — with 60% of that total coming around to score on Navarro’s tater — and eventually built an 8-2 lead.

Oak Harbor kept chipping away, however, cutting the margin to 8-7 before surging ahead 11-10 heading into the bottom of the fifth, and final, inning.

Coupeville had an answer, pulling out the win thanks to big blows off the bats of Katie Marti and Jada Heaton.

Jada had a beautiful shot to deep right field, maybe about two feet from the foul line,” McGranahan said. “It was a great hit and a hit we definitely needed.”

The Wolves rapped out nine hits off of Oak Harbor pitching, but played a complete game, bringing top effort on both sides of the ball.

“Everyone did an amazing job batting, and I think everyone made it on base or hit the ball at least once,” McGranahan said.

“Offense wasn’t the only place we did great things,” she added. “We also were outstanding on defense.”

Wolf catcher Teagan Calkins, already making an impact as an 8th grader, had “two amazing diving tag outs at home plate, which stopped them from scoring any extra runs,” and second-baseman Maya Nottingham “had a great backhand that was deep in the hole!”

McGranahan also praised the play of newcomers Alondra Cruz and Edie Bittner, who “are brand new to the sport and both of them had balls in play.”

A fastball-flinging ace in her own CHS softball days, the JV coach also appreciates seeing young Wolves like Jada Heaton embrace life in the pitcher’s circle.

Jada is an up-and-coming pitcher,” McGranahan said. “She has been working hard to learn how it’s done and taking it on with a huge smile and a ton of effort.

“Today she had her first game experience as a pitcher, and though it was short lived I think very beneficial for her.

“I’m proud of her and so happy she is willing to learn this difficult position. We will continue to work on it and she will continue to grow and be great.”

Navarro, Heaton, Taylor Brotemarkle, and Marti each collected two hits against the Wildcats, with Mia Farris adding a base-knock to the cause.

“All in all, it was a great game and I love seeing the progress they make,” McGranahan said.

The weather was nice, the offense nicer.

Playing under actual sunshine Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad racked up 14 hits and 13 walks, rolling to a 17-0 win over visiting La Conner.

The victory, coming in the Northwest 2B/1B League opener for the Wolves, lifts them to 1-0 in conference play, 2-1 overall.

Tuesday was a March rarity on the prairie.

No rain. Mild temps. Not even a lil’ gust of wind.

A perfect setting for a full-on beatdown, as Coupeville decimated Brave pitching, ringing up those 17 runs while only coming to the plate four times.

And it could have been much, much worse, but the Wolves danced a fine line between being dominant and not wanting to unnecessarily embarrass their foes.

CHS gave away outs by having runners leave the base early, and shuffled its lineup around, giving all 14 varsity players a chance to shine.

Mission accomplished.

Coupeville pitchers Izzy Wells, Allie Lucero, and Maya Lucero combined to chuck a five-inning no-hitter, with La Conner’s lone runner getting aboard thanks to a two-out walk in the top of the first inning.

Wells struck out nine in three innings of work, with Allie (2) and Maya (1) also recording K’s in their inning of work.

At the plate, the Wolves mashed all day long, with 10 different hitters recording at least one base-knock.

Senior centerfielder Audrianna Shaw provided an early highlight when she led off the bottom of the first with a resounding triple to left field, and the rout was on.

Coupeville put up six runs in the opening frame, with the first half of the tally coming around on a pair of errors and a bases-loaded walk to Sofia Peters.

After that, RBI singles from Melanie Navarro, Violette Huegerich, and Shaw plated another three runs.

The Wolves settled for just a lone run in the second, with Izzy Wells golfing an RBI single to left field after Lily Leedy singled and Madison McMillan walked.

CHS closed things out by tacking on five more runs in both the third and fourth.

Mckenna Somes, who enjoyed a stellar day both hitting at the plate and working behind it as a catcher, delivered a two-run single in the third, while Peters crunched an RBI single to center.

Some of the day’s biggest blows were saved for Coupeville’s final at-bats, with McMillan and Allie Lucero popping triples to deep, dark corners of the playing field.

McMillan’s laser, which skidded off her bat and landed in left field, brought a runner around, while Lucero cleared the bases with a three-run three-bagger to right-center.

Coupeville returns to action this Saturday, Mar. 26, when it travels to South Whidbey for a non-conference bout.

After that, the Wolves play four straight against league foes.

No games, but plenty of pics.

The only action on the prairie Monday will be of the type which Allen Iverson used to hate — practice.

Until contests against other schools return Tuesday, here’s a handful of Coupeville High School baseball and softball photos to keep you busy.

The pics come to us from John Fisken, and you can see a lot more by popping over to:

It’s Darrington’s league. For the moment.

With spring sports action still kicking into gear, there have been only two games so far in which Northwest 2B/1B League teams squared off in a conference clash.

Both of those bouts, one on the baseball diamond and one on the softball field, went to the Loggers, who swept La Conner.

So, as we publish our first look at spring sports standings, everything is coming up roses for Darrington.

Now, there are still a lot of games left to play, so maybe don’t go to Vegas and bet the farm on the Loggers just yet.

Coupeville, for one, is scheduled to play its first NWL games this coming week, with baseball, softball, and girls tennis all set to start climbing up the standings ladder.

Baseball gets two league games, hosting La Conner Tuesday, then travelling to Concrete Friday.

Wolf baseball coaches ponder life.

Softball has a split, hosting La Conner Tuesday as well, before hitting the road for a non-conference game Saturday at South Whidbey.

Rounding out the CHS spring teams which keep win/loss records, the netters (weather permitting) have a non-league road trip to Oak Harbor Wednesday.

Wolf tennis then turns right back around and hosts Friday Harbor — the only other NWL team to play the sport — Thursday.

Where things sit through Mar. 20:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
Darrington 1-0 1-0
Concrete 0-0 0-0
Coupeville 0-0 1-3
Friday Harbor 0-0 2-1
MV Christian 0-0 1-0
Orcas Island 0-0 0-1
La Conner 0-1 0-1

Northwest League girls tennis:

School League Overall
Coupeville 0-0 0-0
Friday Harbor 0-0 0-0

Northwest League softball:

School League Overall
Darrington 1-0 1-1
Coupeville 0-0 1-1
Friday Harbor 0-0 0-1
Orcas Island 0-0 0-1
La Conner 0-1 0-1

Coupeville’s Sarah Wright continues to pile up stats on the college softball diamond.

They exited with a win.

Capping a trip to Texas, the Sewanee: University of the South softball squad split a doubleheader with the University of Dallas Saturday afternoon.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright helped spark the Tigers, who dropped the opener 7-2, then won the nightcap 10-2.

The former Wolf star smacked a pair of hits and scampered around the basepaths, stepping on home plate to score three times in the twin-bill.

The split lifts Sewanee to 3-17 on the season and sends it off on another adventure.

Wright and Co., who attend classes in Tennessee, head to Rome, Georgia Mar. 26-27 for a three-game series with Berry College.

Those games are league contests, while the matchup with Dallas was a non-conference affair.

Wright, a junior at Sewanee, is finally getting a chance to play a complete season after year one and two were shortened by the pandemic.

Coupeville’s progeny is first on her team in home runs (2), RBI (10), runs (11), total bases (24), and at-bats (60), while being second in hits (15) and third in doubles (3).

The CHS Valedictorian back in the day, Wright is majoring in politics at Sewanee.
