Spring teams prep for postseason runs

The number of contests goes down, while the importance of those contests goes up.

As we head into the first full week of May, all four Coupeville High School spring sports teams are in action, with the final regular season rumbles mixing with postseason play.

Wolf softball hosts South Whidbey Friday, while the CHS netters travel to Granite Falls Monday and Friday Harbor on Friday, and that’s a wrap for non-playoff games.

Meanwhile, both track and baseball attend district-level events Saturday, with the former at home and the latter on the road at Lakewood.

Qualifying for state will be the primary focus for the Wolves, with softball and tennis making their own bids for further glory the following week.

Calendar rustles, Wolves remain focused

As that old-school warbler Justin Timberlake sort of once sang, “Soon it’s going to be May.”

The final month of the school athletic year is almost upon us, which means the regular season grows short for spring athletes.

Postseason efforts, and the chance to win state tourney glory, will arrive before you know it.

In fact, one Coupeville High School program — track and field — officially gets playoff fever next week.

The Wolves begin the postseason trek next Wednesday, May 1, when they travel to Mount Vernon for the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

After that comes districts and state, but both down the road in May.

Still plenty of work to do for Wolf athletes.

Meanwhile, Coupeville’s other three spring teams continue to plow through regular season contests.

Baseball and softball both travel to La Conner May 2, with the latter of those squads hosting Nooksack Valley the day after for a non-conference tilt.

Girls’ tennis has the week off — from competition with other schools at least — but still has two more matches left to play after that before beginning its own postseason efforts.

Home cooking looms for (some) Wolves

The stretch run comes at home. Mostly.

After a week where 99% of games were on the road, Coupeville High School spring sports teams get six home clashes this coming week.

Both softball and baseball travel to Darrington Monday, then are camped on their own diamonds after that.

Orcas Island is slated to travel to Coupeville Tuesday, with Concrete arriving Thursday, and Darrington swinging by for a rematch Saturday.

The final one of those home games will be Senior Night for Wolf baseball.

The CHS softball sluggers? They have no 12th graders on their roster this season.

Meanwhile, girls’ tennis continues its season-long road trip while waiting for new courts to be finished, with treks to The Bush School in Seattle Wednesday and to Friday Harbor on Friday.

Wrapping things up, Coupeville track and field has its final two regular season meets, with both coming off-Island.

The Wolves travel to Lynden Thursday and Lakewood Saturday, then make the turn to the postseason after that.

As we head into what should be a busy week, a look at where things stand as of April 21 among sports which count wins and losses.

The open road, she calls to me

Willie Smith would love it if gas prices came down right about now.

With Coupeville High School teams having eight of nine events on the road this coming week, the wheels on the busses will be goin’ round and round, prompting more than one fill-up.

That’ll keep the Wolf Athletic Director crunching the numbers and looking forward to the return of home games in the following weeks.

Three of four CHS teams spend their entire week away from Cow Town, with only track and field slated to be at home.

The throwers, runners, and jumpers welcome other teams to Whidbey Wednesday for the Coupeville Classic Invite, then head to North Kitsap Saturday for the Lil’ Norway Invitational.

Meanwhile, Wolf tennis goes to Friday Harbor Wednesday and University Prep Saturday, while CHS baseball hits Friday Harbor Tuesday and Mount Vernon Christian Friday.

Making the most road trips, Coupeville softball is off to Friday Harbor Tuesday, Blaine Friday, and Granite Falls Saturday.

As everyone preps snacks, gets their pillows fluffed, and prepares a play list for the time spent bumping along the backroads of America, a look at current win/loss records for sports which track that sort of thing.

Break’s done, back to work

Time to get back at it.

Coupeville High School sports teams had the week off for spring break, but with the return to classes next week, the Wolves will also return to competition.

With a fury.

Both CHS softball and baseball have four games this coming week, with home clashes against Sultan (Monday) and La Conner (Thursday) and road trips to Darrington (Tuesday) and Forks (Saturday).

Meanwhile Wolf girls’ tennis is slated to travel to South Whidbey Wednesday, while track and field heads to Forks Saturday for a meet.
