Track stars fuel medal mania

Everyone wants some.

State meet medals, that is.

With a new track and field season on the horizon, the journey begins, with Yakima the preferred destination this May.

Advance to the state meet at Zaepfel Stadium at Eisenhower High School, and the Wolves can add to their medal totals or begin the collection process.

Five current stars are among those on the all-time list of CHS athletes who own medals, led by senior Lyla Stuurmans, who has banked three of them.

She’s joined by Carly Burt, Cael Wilson, Axel Marshall, and Zac Tackett, with everyone still chasing the King brothers.

Former Wolf soars to school record

She’s leaving her mark.

Coming off another strong season on the hardwood, former Coupeville supernova Savina Wells kicked off her final track and field season in Florida by breaking a school record.

The Fernandina High School senior recently cleared the bar in the high jump at five feet, three inches, beating her own PR by three inches.

Back in Cow Town, where Wells played multiple sports from preschool through her freshman year, the Coupeville High School record for girls in the event is 5-02, jointly held by Yashmeen Knox and Ryanne Knoblich.

The youngest of Lyle and Katy’s three children, Savina followed in the footsteps of older siblings Ulrik and Izzy and was a key part of a very-successful group of female athletes slated to graduate this spring.

She played two seasons of varsity basketball for CHS, starting as an 8th grader, and departed for Florida in a family move after her freshman season of softball, where she operated as a catcher, hauling in pitches from her big sis.

At Fernandina, the youngest Wells has played volleyball, basketball, and track and field.

Jump throws on big stage

Taygin Jump

Let the implements fly.

Coupeville grad Taygin Jump competed on the big stage Friday and Saturday in Brockport, New York, vying at the SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The event brought together the best athletes from the State University of New York Athletic Conference, with Jump repping Plattsburgh State.

Now a sophomore with the Cardinals, the former Wolf ace earned entries in both the weight throw and shotput.

Jump finished 15th in the latter and 16th in the former, with throws of 31 feet, eight inches, and 38-02.25.

The oldest of Phil and Christina’s three children is pursuing a degree in Environmental Planning & Management/Geology when she’s not busy with her track and field exploits.

Jump crushin’ it in the Big Apple

Taygin Jump had herself quite a day.

Competing at the St. Lawrence Open in Canton, New York, Friday, the Coupeville grad captured a win in the weight throw, smashing her PR, while also earning a third place showing in the shot put.

The Plattsburgh State sophomore, who has been on a roll during the indoor track and field season, was on point all day.

Jump lobbed the shot put 31 feet, 2.50 inches to open things, then came back around to dominate in the weight throw.

Aleksia and Khanor’s older sister chucked her implement 44-06.75, besting her previous college high water mark of 42-6.75.

She also was an astounding four-feet-plus better than the second-place finisher, as she obliterated her eight opponents.

A volleyball and track star during her days in Coupeville, Taygin Jump is currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Planning & Management/Geology when she’s not flexing in the athletic spotlight.

Plattsburgh State returns to action next weekend, Feb. 28-Mar. 1, when it competes at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships in Brockport, New York.

Wyman shines in college track meet

Busy day, successful day.

Coupeville grad Tate Wyman, now a sophomore at Oregon Tech, was back in action Saturday, competing in the EOU Last Chance Meet in La Grande.

It was his first action in three weeks, as several indoor track and field meets were erased recently by bad weather.

Wyman competed in three events Saturday at the meet hosted by Eastern Oregon University, setting PRs in two, and narrowly missing in the third.

His best finish was a second-place performance in the 60-meter race, where he hit the tape in 9.08 seconds, a hair off his college PR of 9.10.

The former Wolf also earned third in the long jump (21-03.25) and sixth in the 400 (53.51), nailing down his best-ever collegiate marks in both events.

Wyman, whose younger sisters Ayden and Devon are following in his fast footsteps at CHS, competed in cross country and track and field during his Cow Town days, earning a second-place state meet medal in the 4 x 100 as a senior.
