Jake McCormick

Jake McCormick is part of the 7th fastest 4 x 400 relay squad in District 1.

OK, calm down, there are still two months to go, but … right now, this moment … Makana Stone would be a state champion.

The Coupeville High School sophomore has run the fastest 400 time of any girl in 1A, 2B or 1B this season, clocking in at 61.46 at the Seattle Academy Relays Mar. 22.

Three meets into the season, Stone appears four times on the 1A girls Top 10 lists, with top-five times in the 200, 400 and as a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams, where she’s joined by Marisa Etzell, Sylvia Hurlburt and Lauren Grove.

None of those four Wolves are seniors, either, with Etzell the oldest as a mere junior. Continued good times should be ahead.

The CHS boys don’t have any athletes in the Top 10 currently, but they do have a fair amount making the list if you take one step down and look at the top performers in District 1.

Sylvia Hurlburt is hopping for joy over her team’s performance.

She’s not slowing down any time soon.

Coupeville High School sophomore Makana Stone is starting off her second track season the same way she did her first one — kickin’ butt and takin’ names.

Thursday, she and her teammates were in Sultan for a four-team meet and the swift one captured victories in all four of her events.

She cruised to first in the 100 and 200, then teamed with junior Marisa Etzell, fellow sophomore Sylvia Hurlburt and freshman Lauren Grove to capture both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay races.

On the boys side of the battle, Wolf senior Nick Streubel out-flung teammate Dalton Martin to claim the discus title, the only event win for Coupeville.

With a thin roster, the 1A Wolves finished fourth in both team competitions, behind 2A schools Lakewood, Archbishop Thomas Murphy and Sultan.

Dananacious Maxie

Dananecious Maxie

There’s a new sprinter in the game, and by the time you say her name, she’ll have run past you several times.

Dananecious Maxie is bubbly, outgoing and quick. Put that all together with a strong belief in herself, and the Coupeville High School track team has another weapon to employ on an already-loaded girls’ squad.

“I enjoy my track homies and how we are open with each other and like to have fun and encourage each other,” Maxie said. “My coaches are the most fun coaches I ever had and they care about us and our life.

“Shout-out to my inspiration — Mr. (Randy) King and (Tom) Fournier,” she added. “They wanna see us succeed.”

Maxie came up in sports, playing volleyball, softball, soccer and AAU basketball in elementary and middle school. But track, where she competes in the 100, the long jump and on the 4 x 100 relay team, is a new challenge for her.

“I always wanted to do it,” she said. “My strengths are being strong and I’m a fast learner and I’m open to do and try new things.

“I would like to work on my speed and endurance,” Maxie added. “Also believing in my self and knowing I’m a conquerer from within. My goals for this season are to be everything that I am in track and to win first place sometime and have confidence while running.”

Her confidence has been bolstered by a strong family that looks out for her and helps her grow every day.

“The most important thing my family, my mom and dad Dannette and Alonzo Boyles, they challenge me every day with their daily parenting skills,” Maxie said. “I was also taught to believe in my self and never let anybody tell me something that I’m not.

“God is always by my side, always have faith,” she added. “My sisters and brothers, because we always have fun no matter what.”

Away from the athletic fields, Maxie enjoys her history class.

“I like it because we laugh and learn and do everything within the hour that we have and we make Mr. King crazy,” she said.

No matter what she’s doing, Maxie always stay true to the beat, as well.

“I like to sing, dance and write music,” she said. “I live music in general. Music is my homie!!”

Sky

Skyler Lawrence claimed top-eight finishes in shot put, javelin and discus.

Coupeville’s best beat the big boys (and girls).

Competing at the Seattle Academy Relays in Shoreline Saturday (which, despite the title, included other events besides just relays), Wolf senior thrower Nick Streubel and sophomore sprinter Makana Stone each won an individual title.

Even better, they both set PR’s to do it.

Streubel launched the shot put 45 feet, nine and a half inches, almost an inch and a half further than his previous best, and a solid four inches ahead of his nearest competitor.

Stone cruised to a win in the 400 in 1:01.46, out-leaning the number two runner by more than a full second. Her fastest time in the event coming in to the meet was 62.11.

Coupeville’s best showing in the relay events — which the meet was named for — came in the girls’ 4 x 100, where the quarter of Sylvia Hurlburt, Lauren Grove, Nene Maxie and Marisa Etzell claimed second.

The meet drew eight boys’ teams and nine girls’ teams, with 3A Schorecrest taking both team titles. The Wolves, repping the smallest 1A school in the state, finished 3rd and 5th, respectively.

Lathom Kelley (left) is on his way. (John Fisken photo)

Lathom Kelley wants to erase Mitch Pelroy from the record books, and Pelroy couldn’t be happier.

Now playing football at Montana Western, Pelroy was a three-sport stud during his days at Coupeville High School, playing football, basketball and track and his name is still up on the big board in the CHS gym for his running exploits.

His time of 22.84 stands as the school record in the 200.

Now Kelley, a speedy sophomore who has taken great leaps in the weight room in off-season workouts, is coming hard for Pelroy’s status as top dog in the sprints.

He ran a 23.85 in the season-opening Whidbey Island Jamboree Thursday (his best as a freshman was 24.93), finishing just off of meet winner Dejon Devroe of host Oak Harbor.

Not bad for a guy from the smallest 1A school in the state going head-to-head with a dude from a bigger 3A school.

Now Kelley wants more.

“Sorry Mitch, but my goal is to take your name off that board. With only good intentions though,” Kelley said.

Pelroy, a proud alumni, welcomed the spirit of his successor.

“Oh, I know you will take it off man,” Pelroy said. “I hope you get it soon!”

The exchange warmed the heart of CHS football/basketball coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh, a guy who can still get from one place to another pretty quickly himself.

“I love it when alumni encourage current athletes. Sign that things are changing around here,” Van Velkinburgh said. “Keep up the amazing work Mitch and Lathom. I couldn’t be more proud of the both of you.”
