Your stadium can’t contain Joey Lippo!

The bat is sizzlin’.

Day two of a five-day jaunt to Florida brought more success for Coupeville grad Joey Lippo, as he continued to tear up college baseball pitching.

The former Wolf bashed four hits across two games Monday, including launching a home run to left center.

But while Lippo’s bat was getting work done, his University of Maine at Presque Isle hardball team didn’t have as much luck, dropping both games it played.

After absorbing a 14-3 loss to Rutgers University-Newark and an 18-4 defeat at the hands of SUNY Plattsburgh, the Owls fall to 1-5 on the season.

Presque Isle, which is playing five straight days in Florida, has its lightest schedule Tuesday, with just a single game against SUNY Brockport.

The Owls wrap up their southern jaunt with doubleheaders Wednesday (Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts) and Thursday (Colby-Sawyer College), then are off for nine days.

Lippo opened play Monday by bashing three hits off of Rutgers pitching, before topping his day with a round-tripper against Plattsburgh.

Through six games, he tops Presque Isle in virtually every offensive category, from batting average (.500) to hits (9), runs (4), RBI (3), on-base percentage (.524), and slugging percentage (.778).

Lippo lashes frozen ropes in the sun

Like Superman before him, Joey Lippo seems to draw power from the sun.

Kicking off a nine-games-in-five-days road trip to Florida, the Coupeville grad rapped out five hits Sunday as he and his college baseball team split a doubleheader.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle slipped past Gallaudet University 3-2 in the opener, then fell 8-7 in extra innings in the nightcap.

The Owls, now 1-3 on the young season, get right back at it Monday with games against Rutgers University-Newark and SUNY Plattsburgh.

Lippo put up quality numbers in both games Sunday, lashing a leadoff triple in the opener.

He came around to score on an RBI single from teammate Timothy Burns, then added an RBI on a sac fly to stake Presque Isle to the win.

Playing the all-around game, Lippo also gunned down a runner at the plate, launching a cannon shot from deep in center field.

Returning to the field for game #2, the former Wolf stayed en fuego, bashing four hits against Gallaudet pitching.

Through four games, Lippo, a sophomore at Presque Isle, is hitting .455 with a .462 on base percentage and a .636 slugging percentage.

Support prairie powerhouse’s college volleyball dreams

You can help send Emma Smith to the next level.

The Coupeville High School grad is currently playing club volleyball while attending the University of Washington.

Now the Huskies are looking to raise money to send two squads to the season-ending National Collegiate Volleyball Federation tournament in Phoenix, Arizona April 14-16.

U-Dub spikers need $15,000 to cover hotels, travel expenses, and entry fees, and have already topped $3,000 in a short time.

This will be the first NCVF tourney in three years, as the pandemic erased the last two national championships.

While the University of Washington funds its NCAA D-I volleyball program, club sports rely on the goodwill and bucks of Husky supporters who contribute to fundraisers.

The club volleyball program features two traveling teams, which compete in the Pacific Collegiate Volleyball Association, and a third squad which provides opportunities to beginners.

Smith, a four-year varsity player at Coupeville High School, is on the Husky B team, having been selected after tryouts which involved 150+ players.

During her time at CHS, she was an All-Conference pick and qualified for state tourneys in both volleyball and track and field.

A ferocious hitter from the middle blocker position, Smith was a team captain, a stat leader, and a ray of sunshine on the prairie.

An inductee into the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, Emma kept her family’s proud athletic tradition in fine form, following in the large footsteps of aunt Joli, uncle Todd, dad Jesse, and Grandpa Steve.

Spotlight spins back to Slammin’ Sarah

She’s getting some big props.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright was honored Monday by the Southern Athletic Association, tabbed as the SAA Softball Player of the Week.

The former Wolf, now a junior at Sewanee: The University of the South, had a huge day Sunday, ripping holes in the encroaching fog with lasers off her bats.

Wright bashed a double, came around to score, then hammered a game-tying three-run homerun as the Tigers stunned highly ranked Birmingham-Southern College.

Sewanee, which trailed 5-1 entering its final at-bat, rallied to win 6-5.

Wright, a prairie supernova, was a four-sport star, Valedictorian, and Homecoming Queen during her days at Coupeville High School.

She also sparked a full-on riot by an unruly group of hungry seagulls when she went running through an Eastern Washington parking lot waving tasty sandwiches in both hands while killing time at the state softball tourney during her high school senior season.

Legendary.

Wright goes yard in college diamond victory

Not even the fog can stop her.

Playing on a day when weather first delayed her game, then shortened it, Coupeville grad Sarah Wright came up huge in the clutch Sunday in Tennessee.

Blasting a two-out, game-tying three-run homerun, the former Wolf star sparked Sewanee: The University of the South to a come-from-behind 6-5 win against the #5 ranked team in NCAA D-III softball.

Using a five-run rally to topple Birmingham-Southern in a game shortened to five innings, the Tigers won their second-straight game after dropping their first 11 contests of the season.

Sewanee was supposed to play three games this weekend, but Saturday’s doubleheader was postponed by weather.

Sunday’s twin-bill was cut down to one game, and only after the teams sat out a 30-minute fog delay midgame.

When she was on the field Sunday Wright was a holy terror.

The former CHS Valedictorian doubled, then came around to score to carry Sewanee to an early 1-0 lead.

She saved her best for last, however, crushing a ball down the left field line to knot the game at 5-5 with Sewanee down to its final out.

The Tigers won three batters later when Kendall Goodrum punched an RBI single to score Michaela Walker with the walk-off winner.

Wright, who is in her junior season at Sewanee, is finally set to play a full season on the diamond after her first two campaigns in Tennessee were shortened by the pandemic.

She’s piled up nine hits, including three doubles and Sunday’s four-bagger, to go with seven runs, seven RBI, and three walks this season.

The crunch-time home run against Birmingham-Southern was the third round-tripper of Wright’s collegiate career.

Sewanee returns to action — weather permitting — next weekend, when it squares off with Hendrix College from Arkansas.
