Tyler King (left), still fast after all these years.

Former CHS state champ Tyler King (left), still fast after all these years.

Tyler King, the big time. Big time, Mr. Tyler King.

Oh, you’ve already met? Good, good.

As he continues to write the final chapter in his stellar college running career, Coupeville High School grad (and living legend) Tyler King spends a lot of time hanging out with the best in the business.

Friday morning, that brought him and his University of Washington cross country teammates to Wisconsin, where the Huskies ran in the Adidas Invitational, an event that draws a bigger field than the NCAA Championships themselves.

While there King acquitted himself quite nicely, finishing in the top third of a 244-runner field.

He covered the 8K course at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison in a crisp 24 minutes, 22 seconds to claim 83rd place.

King was the third fastest U-Dub male finisher.

The Husky men claimed 13th, out of 36 teams, with Syracuse, the #2-ranked team in the nation, collecting the championship trophy.

Marc Scott of Tulsa was the individual winner in 23:35.

King’s training partners did even better, as the Husky women, who are ranked #10, finished 8th as a team in their race.

Boise State’s Allie Ostrander won the individual title, while top-ranked New Mexico flexed its might in capturing the team title.

Maddie Meyers topped the Washington women with a 29th place performance.

Up next for King and Co. is the Pac-12 Championships Oct. 30 in Colfax.

Spikers one, gridiron warriors zero.

Of the five former Coupeville High School athletes competing in college sports this week, only one came away a winner.

That was Monica Vidoni, who saw action as her Rainy River Community College volleyball squad rolled to wins Oct. 7 against Hibbing and Oct. 9 against Fond du Lac.

None of her former classmates could say the same Saturday, as three teams, featuring four former Wolves, all fell in college football games.

Central Washington University and former CHS lineman Nick Streubel lost 49-44 to the South Dakota School of Mines, snapping their three-game winning streak.

Also taking a loss was Simon Fraser University, which was edged 38-35 by Dixie State.

The Clan boast two Wolf alumni, Josh Bayne and Jake Tumblin, and Bayne snared a tackle from his defensive back position.

Rounding out the Coupeville contingent was Mitch Pelroy, who brought back a kick-off 37 yards and had a tackle in Montana Western’s 37-30 overtime loss to second-ranked Southern Oregon.

It was the second straight loss for the Bulldogs, who had previously put together a seven-game winning streak covering parts of two seasons.

While her male counterparts are a combined 6-9 this year (Western is 3-2, Central 3-3 and Simon Fraser 0-4), Vidoni and her Voyageurs teammates are 14-11 on the season, 6-3 in conference play.

Vidoni, a freshman, has played in 11 sets over seven matches, compiling four kills and a dig.

"Of course I'm still fast. How dare you question the very laws of the universe?!?"

“Of course I’m still fast. How dare you question the very laws of the universe?!?”

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about former Wolves playing college football.

It’s deserved, certainly, but we can’t forget the Coupeville High School alum, who, while not a gridiron warrior, is currently competing at the highest level of college sports.

Tyler King, an All-American cross country runner on scholarship at the University of Washington, is three races deep into his final year as a Husky and he hasn’t lost a stride.

The UW senior opened his final campaign with an 11th place finish at the UW-Seattle U Open Sept. 1 (he zipped through 4.5 miles in 22 minutes, 19.32 seconds).

After that has come runs at the Sundodger Invitational Sept. 19 and the Washington Invitational Oct. 2.

King was 14th at Sundodger, covering 8,000 meters in 24:44.04, then claimed 33rd at Friday’s race.

In a highly-competitive field which included two of the top five schools in the nation in Stanford and Oregon, he ran a 23:55.3.

That was a step up from his junior year performance in the race (24:20) and garnered him praise from Husky coach Greg Metcalf on the school’s official web site.

King and his teammates travel to Madison for the Wisconsin Invitational Oct. 16, then charge into the post-season.

The Pac-12 Championships are Oct. 30, followed by the NCAA West Regionals Nov. 13 and the NCAA Championships Nov. 21.

Hailey

Saturday was all about reunions.

While three former Coupeville High School football teammates faced each other on the college gridiron, two former Wolf softball pals also met back up.

Madeline Roberts, now a sophomore at Shoreline Community College, and Hailey Hammer, a freshman at Everett Community College, both played in a college tourney held in Oregon.

The NWAC Sophomore Showcase/Fall Classic went down at the Delta Park Sports Complex in Portland.

It was the first chance for the hard-hitting Hammer to play college ball.

“We did good with only four practices as a team,” she said. “I played first and third, had a couple great plays at both spots.

“I hit alright, it was only the first tournament so it will get better,” Hammer added. “I’m loving playing college ball with my new family.”

Roberts spent most of the day getting on base, walking four times and ripping an RBI single as her team won two of three.

“Our team is pretty strong this year,” she said. “So it should be a rockin’ season!”

The gang’s all here.

Well, if “here” is Ellensburg, it was true.

Saturday afternoon brought college football to the forefront once again.

Taking advantage of it, a pack of Coupeville fans headed East to see three former Wolves face off on the gridiron.

Former teammates Nick Streubel, Josh Bayne and Jake Tumblin reunited for the first time at the college level, with Streubel’s Central Washington University squad knocking off Simon Fraser 40-7.

Tumblin and Bayne didn’t go down without a fight, however, as the two freshman combined for five tackles and six assists for The Clan.

Bayne had three tackles and three assists (and got half of a tackle for loss), while Tumblin had two tackles and two assists.

The duo will meet back up with the lineman who used to open running paths for them when the two schools play Nov. 6 in Burnaby.

Win streak snapped: Meanwhile, off in in Dillon, Montana, another former Wolf saw his team’s run of success momentarily halted.

Montana Western and Mitch Pelroy fell 10-9 to Carroll College, ruining the Bulldogs Homecoming and snapping a seven-game winning streak that had dated back to last year.

Pelroy recorded a tackle from his defensive back position, but Montana Western (3-1) stalled out time and again on offense, netting just three field goals.
