Basketball is lurking just around the corner.

Sure, there’s still a chunk of the fall sports season left to play, but, for some players, it’s never too early to plan ahead for hoops season.

Traveling photo man John Fisken was wandering around area gyms Tuesday (as he is known to do), and snapped these pics of CHS players taking advantage of an open gym to work on their games.

Easy breezy.

Among the most laid-back of Wolf athletic stars, CHS senior Aaron Trumbull was the face of this blog for the first year.

A photo of him and teammate Carson Risner anchored the top banner of Coupeville Sports and served me well.

Thanks to his mom, Shelli, the clicker of a billion photos, Aaron’s athletic exploits have been well-documented.

From the diamond to the hard-court to the golf course and a trip to the hospital after a bone-rattling collision with the floor during hoops season, it’s always Trumbull Time around here.

And, he’s put up with it all, never losing his smile or becoming jaded.

Kid has his head on straight and remains one of the hardest workers in town, a testament to never backing down or walking away, whether the season ends with a trip to state or a winless record.

Today, on his 18th birthday, with his ears probably still ringing from his birthday concert (Godsmack, Rob Zombie and friends at Pain in the Grass), we’ll cut the words short and just give him a nod.

You’re a class act, Mr. Trumbull. Here’s to a happy birthday and a stellar final year as a Wolf.

Still kinda weird to see them in blue.

Still kinda weird to see them in blue.

For the second straight summer, Wolves and Falcons mingled together, and there was peace and good will for all.

Making the trip down South, Coupeville High School baseball stars Aaron Trumbull and Cole Payne swapped out red and black and wore South Whidbey blue and white to play American Legion ball for Falcon coach Tom Fallon.

Along for the ride, snapping away madly on her camera, was Shelli Trumbull, who provides us with the pics above, a final salute to baseball as summer slips away.

After years of dealing with refs, Aaron Trumbull has become one.

The Coupeville High School senior, who will be returning to lead Wolf basketball and baseball squads during the 2014-2015 high school year, is also moonlighting on the other side of the whistle.

Trumbull made his debut in black and white stripes during a youth football jamboree Saturday, and will be reffing Peewee through 8th grade games this football season.

“He was asked by Tim O’ Brien during legion ball. Tim’s the head ref,” said mom Shelli Trumbull. “Tim said it was a skill he could learn now and continue to work through college.

“He’s having fun and learning a new skill,” she added. “The other side of the game.”

Coupeville’s hired guns continue to sparkle down South.

Wolves Aaron Trumbull and Cole Payne are playing summer ball with the South Whidbey American Legion squad, and, other than looking slightly odd in blue and white as opposed to red and black, the duo are fitting right in.

With Trumbull seeing time at first and on the mound and Payne shuttling between catcher and the infield, they and their new teammates are 8-10 on the season.

Having split doubleheaders with Burlington, Lake Stevens and Oak Harbor and swept a twinbill from Nooksack Valley last week, the Falcons are heading in the right direction.

South Whidbey closes the regular season with a doubleheader against Lynden Wednesday, before kicking off the postseason with districts on July 16.

“We’re right in the middle of the pack,” said South Whidbey coach Tom Fallon. “We are hoping to finish .500 overall and head into the playoffs on a roll.”
