The streak lives.

Abraham Leyva bolted in from the right side midway through the second half Tuesday night, beat Klahowya’s goalie and rattled home the 18th goal of his stellar senior soccer season.

The lone score for Coupeville in a 5-1 loss to an Eagle squad with legitimate dreams of competing for a state title, it kept alive Leyva’s streak of scoring in every game this season.

It also added to what is already a single-season CHS scoring record.

That goal, and several brilliant saves by Wolf goaltender Connor McCormick, who was under fire most of the night, were the highlights in a match that was largely controlled by the visitors.

The loss dropped Coupeville to 1-2 in league play, 4-6-1 overall, and, for the moment, puts them in third place in the 1A Olympic League.

Klahowya (3-0, 11-1-1) is out in front as it tries to defend its league title, with Port Townsend (2-1, 5-5-1) a game up on the Wolves with three to play.

Chimacum (0-3, 1-9) is firmly wedged in the cellar and would be odd man out in a league in which three teams will advance to the postseason this year.

Coupeville travels to Port Townsend Thursday for a crucial match-up with the RedHawks, who beat them 2-1 in their first meeting.

Win and they would move back into a tie for second-place, which is huge, as the #2 team out of the Olympic League will host its opening playoff game.

Facing off with one of the state’s premier 1A teams Tuesday, the Wolves, who were missing five varsity players, including three starters, held their own for a very solid opening 15 minutes.

While the Eagles relentlessly pushed the attack, Coupeville scrambled on defense, kept the ball away from the net as much as possible and gave McCormick a chance.

The senior net-minder made several strong saves (though he saved his best, in which he went airborne and punched a shot away, Superman-style, for the second half) and was fairly spot-on.

But, Klahowya has a team chock-full of precision shooters and they eventually broke through, netting a goal in the 15th minute.

A second shot skittered through in the 26th minute when McCormick got wedged in the middle of a scrum right in front of the net and couldn’t get free, then the Eagles tacked on two more scores right before the half.

Making a solid charge in the second half, Coupeville racked up several shots on goal, with Leyva’s goal being the one that found the back of the net, but while Klahowya’s defense bent a bit, it rarely broke.

When he's not fighting for

Andre Avila (left) tallied his first varsity goal in the 10-1 win.

Circle Apr. 30 on your calendar.

That’s when the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad hosts Chimacum, and, if recent history is any indication, it will offer local fans a chance to blast their vuvuzela horns non-stop.

If that’s still a thing..

Oh, it’s not?

Well, it should be.

Facing off with the Cowboys Thursday in Chimacum, the Wolves kept their streak alive, raining down double digits in goals every time the programs have played.

This time out, it finished 10-1 (with Chimacum chipping in with two own goals), after Coupeville scored 11 and 13 last year.

The victory, the fourth in the last five games for the suddenly-surging Wolves, lifts them to 1-1 in 1A Olympic play, 4-5-1 overall.

It slides them into a second-place tie with Port Townsend (also exactly 1-1, 4-5-1), a game off of defending league champs Klahowya (2-0, 9-1-1), which travels to Whidbey Tuesday, Apr. 26.

Chimacum (0-2, 1-8), as you might expect, is firmly in the cellar.

While the two own goals by the Cowboys would have been enough for a narrow Coupeville win, the Wolves decided to help things along by raining down a parade of their own scores, as well.

Abraham Leyva punched in three, giving him 17 on the season.

That breaks the single-season scoring record of 14 goals he set just a year ago, and keeps an amazing streak going.

Leyva has found the back of the net in all 10 games this season.

He got plenty of help from running mate Zane Bundy, who did a bit of everything.

Bundy tallied two goals, doubling his season output to four, and also rang up a season-high four assists.

Coupeville’s other scores came from William Nelson and Ethan Spark, who both connected for the third time this year, and senior Andre Avila, who notched his first varsity goal.

Nelson had two assists, while Leyva, Avila and Cody Menges each set up a score.

The rout gave Coupeville a chance to try out some new looks, which always makes a coach happy.

“Was a good win for us, and gave us a chance to play a number of JV players in a varsity game, since there was no JV game,” said Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson. “Great experience for our younger players, who stepped in and did a great job.”

Through good times, through bad times, the streak lives on.

Coupeville High School senior Abraham Leyva continued his astonishing run on the soccer pitch Thursday, burying a goal in the back of the net for the ninth consecutive game.

His 14th goal this year — tying his own school single-season scoring record — it wasn’t quite enough, however, as the Wolves fell 2-1 to visiting Port Townsend in a match which came down to the final moments.

“It was a hard-fought game where either team could have come out on top,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson.

The loss, coming in Coupeville’s league opener, dropped the Wolves to 3-5-1 overall.

They sit in a tie with Chimacum (0-1, 1-5), their next opponent, a game off of Klahowya (1-0, 7-1-1) and Port Townsend (1-0, 4-3-1) with five left to play.

The Wolves will have a week to plan for that match-up with the Cowboys, which arrives Thursday, Apr. 21.

Leyva, who now has 39 goals in his three-year CHS career (11 as a sophomore, 14 as a junior), has tallied a score in every Wolf contest this season, with four-goal and three-goal nights, both against Forks.

Ethan Spark

Ethan Spark, seen here creepin’ through the defense in an earlier game, also scored in the rout.

Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Playing against Forks for the final time in his stellar prep career, Abraham Leyva torched the Spartans for four more goals Monday, sparking the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad to a 7-2 win deep in Twilight country.

The win, the third straight for the Wolves, lifts them to 3-4-1 and marks the end of the non-conference season.

From this point on it’s all league games, with six straight against 1A Olympic League rivals.

First up is Port Townsend (2-2-1), which visits Whidbey Thursday (JV 5 PM, varsity 6:45).

Leyva’s goal explosion, which comes a week to the day after he netted a hat trick on headers while playing Forks in Coupeville, gives him 13 on the season.

It also keeps alive his amazing streak of having scored in every game as a senior.

He now sits just a goal off of his own school single-season scoring record of 14, which he netted as a junior. That came on the heels of an 11-goal Wolf debut as a sophomore.

While Leyva was raining down goals, he wasn’t the only Wolf with a hot foot Monday.

CHS junior Zack Nall scored his first varsity goal and liked it so much he immediately went back for a second one, while sophomore Ethan Spark also launched his second score of the campaign.

Nall, Spark, Sebastian Davis, William Nelson and Zane Bundy (who had several assists Monday) each have two goals this season and sit in a five-way tie behind Leyva on the team scoring chart.

JV also wins:

Laurence Boado and Andre Avila scored as the Wolves escaped town with a 2-1 victory.

Zane Bundy, seen here on the charge in an earlier game, punched in his second goal of the season Friday in a 3-0 win.

Now they’re rolling.

Recording their second-straight 3-0 win Friday, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad officially kicked off a winning streak.

This victory came in Puyallup, with host Cascade Christian bowing to the suddenly-potent Wolf attack.

Now 2-4-1 on the season, Coupeville will try and stretch the streak out to three when it travels to Forks Monday.

That will be a rematch (the Wolves knocked off the Spartans this past Monday on Whidbey) and will cap the non-conference portion of the schedule.

After that one, CHS has a run of six straight 1A Olympic League games beginning with a home game Thursday, Apr. 14 against Port Townsend (2-2-1).

Facing off with a win-less Cascade Christian squad Friday, the Wolves rattled home three goals, with three different players hitting the back of the net.

Abraham Leyva tallied his ninth goal, while keeping alive his streak of having scored in every game this season.

Fellow seniors Zane Bundy and Sebastian Davis netted scores as well. It was the second goal of the season for each of them.

Leyva and Zack Nall each picked up an assist while Wolf goalie Connor McCormick notched his second straight shutout.

“We played our best game to date,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “A very balanced game with some great defense, and a quick attack going forward.”
