Abraham Leyva had the kind of game they write songs about.

Picking apart host Chimacum from every angle Thursday, the Coupeville High School junior scored four goals and assisted on four others as the Wolves romped to an 11-1 victory.

The victory improved Coupeville to 2-5 overall, while launching them into first place in the 1A Olympic League standings at a pristine 1-0.

With fellow high-scoring gunner Zane Bundy out for the season (broken fibula), Leyva took the lead on offense all afternoon.

Abraham had a great game,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “He was a force that Chimacum did not have an answer to.”

“Nice to start the league season off well.”

Leyva’s goal explosion doubled his season output, putting him well ahead of the pack with eight goals.

JT Quinn, making his varsity debut, chipped in with a pair of goals, while Tanner Kircher, William Nelson, Ethan Spark, Sebastian Davis and Joel Walstad all found the back of the net as well.

Nelson and Spark also recorded assists.

Coupeville has a chance to get off to a really solid start in league play, since its next game is a rematch with the same team it just demolished.

The Wolves host Chimacum April 23.

Maybe the Everett Herald was right when they once spelled Joel Walstad’s last name Walstud.

The Coupeville High School senior threw down a scoreless first half as a goalie Saturday, then moved up front and scored a goal of his own as the Wolf boys’ soccer squad thrashed visiting Forks 4-0.

The non-conference win improved CHS to 1-4 on the season.

A day after signing a college football scholarship, Walstad returned to the pitch and controlled the game on both ends.

The few times Forks made a significant run at the net, he shut them down.

Then, after being relieved by Connor McCormick in goal, he punched in a loose ball after a scramble in front of the net.

The original shot, mishandled by the Spartan goalie, came off of the foot of Abraham Leyva, who was trying for a hat trick.

The Wolf junior opened the game with a run down the right side for a goal, then tacked on a second score early in the second half when he curled a shot from the left side.

That gives him a team-high four goals on the season.

Coupeville’s other score came from Garrett Compton, who, much like Walstad, caught a rebound on his toe and banked the ball back in past a frustrated, vocal Forks goaltender.

The Wolves controlled play from start to finish, with a defense led by Aaron Wright and Oscar Liquidano being largely impenetrable.

Along with the four scores, Coupeville had numerous other shots on goals, as Leyva, Compton and Ryan Freeman attacked at will.

The only bad moment for CHS came early, when high-scoring weapon Zane Bundy tumbled over the prone goalie while trying to convert on a breakaway.

He exited the game and limped on and off the field with two teammates helping him at all times.

Forward progress.

It didn’t get the win it wanted, falling 3-2 in overtime to visiting Cascade Christian Wednesday, but the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad did break through.

Junior Abraham Leyva punched in a pair of first-half goals to snap a scoreless streak that had plagued the Wolves through the first three games of the season.

Unfortunately, CHS couldn’t make a 2-1 halftime lead hold up and fell to 0-4 in non-conference play.

The deciding goal came with about a minute left to play in the overtime period.

While the loss stung, the progress in all aspects of the game cheered CHS coach Kyle Nelson.

“The boys continue to improve,” he said. “Our defensive effort and passing game was much better.

“We will continue to work hard in practice and look to get our first victory Saturday.”

The Wolves return to action with a home game against Forks that day.

In a reversal of the normal order, varsity plays first at 1 PM, followed by the JV at 3.

It was a busy day Saturday.

Two Coupeville High School teams kicked off the spring sports season under surprisingly sunny skies, just a stone’s throw from each other.

While the Wolf baseball squad was dismantling visiting Blaine 10-0, the CHS boys’ soccer squad rumbled in a three-team jamboree with South Whidbey and Lake Stevens.

Camera in hand, proud mom Wendy McCormick documented the happenings on the pitch, and the photos above are courtesy her.

Onward and upward.

Blessed with a strong core of returning battle-hardened varsity players, including the team’s leading scorers from a year ago, the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad has high hopes as it moves into the 1A Olympic League.

The Wolves went 5-10-2 overall, 4-9-1 in league play during their final run through the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

Now they’ll match-up with Port Townsend, Chimacum and Klahowya, having left behind the private school juggernauts.

“I think in general we will be able to compete a little better,” said second-year Wolf coach Kyle Nelson. “The level of play between the teams should be more even, meaning probably more close exciting games this year.”

Nelson took over the reigns from Paul Mendes, moving up from his job as assistant coach. With a year at the helm, his confidence is strong.

“Just having a years worth of experience helps; I am starting the year better prepared and a more complete vision of what I want us to accomplish,” Nelson said. “On the other side, going to a new league this year is a big adjustment, playing teams that we have not played before brings a lot of unknown.”

What is known is that the Wolves return their top two scorers in juniors Abraham Leyva (a Second Team All-Conference pick last year) and Zane Bundy.

Joining them as returnees are Colin Belliveau, Josh Datin, Ryan Freeman, Tanner Kircher, Keegan Korteum, Uriel Liquidano, Oscar Liquidano, Connor McCormick, Loren Nelson, Joel Walstad and Aaron Wright.

Former JV players Garrett Compton and Cody Menges and freshman William Nelson are also in the mix for playing time at the varsity level.

“We have many returning players with varsity experience. We will be building from where we were last year,” Kyle Nelson said. “We are still coming together as a team. Some guys are playing in new positions, so we need some time to learn new roles and responsibilities.”

Coupeville advanced to the playoffs last year, falling 3-0 to Mount Baker. This year, the Wolves will be looking for a return trip to the postseason, but one of a longer duration.

“I fully expect to have some postseason play this year,” Kyle Nelson said. “With the way the District 3 tournament is set I believe we will have a good opportunity for some success.”
