Next girl up.

With three starters sidelined Thursday, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team never missed a beat.

Instead, the Wolves got strong work from those who were able to be in uniform, and plowed right through host Mount Vernon Christian in straight sets.

The 25-12, 25-12, 25-19 win lifts Coupeville to 10-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 10-5 overall.

It marks the fifth time in six seasons CHS spiker coach Cory Whitmore has led his program to double-digit wins.

And, that one miss doesn’t really count, as Covid restricted the Wolves to just nine matches total last season.

Coupeville is now off to the postseason, with a trip to La Conner set for Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The Wolves open the District 1/2 tourney against Auburn Adventist Academy at 5 PM in a loser-out match.

Win, and Coupeville returns to the floor at 7:30 that night to play two-time defending 2B state champs La Conner for this year’s one golden ticket to the big dance.

Thursday night the Wolves kept their focus on the task at hand, closing the regular season with a bang.

“It was a fun night,” Whitmore said. “The girls brought a lot of energy and I was very happy with how they stepped up around some shuffling of positions and teams.

“We served very well with our locations being very precise.”

Freshman Katie Marti slid into the setter position, and “did a great job finding the hitters and looked very comfortable at the faster pace.”

That calmness and strong play carried over to other players, as well.

“Our back row players were so consistent tonight, making Katie’s job easier and then our middles had a phenomenal night with their efficiency,” Whitmore said.

Jill (Prince) and Olivia (Schaffeld) played very well, finding open court.

“They worked really well together and it was fun to watch them leave league play on such a positive form of execution.”

Thursday stats:

Alita Blouin — 13 digs, 5 aces
Taygin Jump — 5 digs, 3 aces
Ryanne Knoblich — 3 kills, 3 digs, 1 ace
Katie Marti
— 1 kill, 2 digs, 22 assists, 4 aces
Madison McMillan — 4 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces
Jill Prince — 11 kills
Olivia Schaffeld
— 7 kills, 1 ace

Ryanne Knoblich has been a solid contributor off the bench.

The numbers tell the story.

Five matches into the season, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team is 4-0 in league play, 4-1 overall.

The Wolves have gotten there thanks to solid contributions across the board, with 11 different players racking up stats.

Leading the way is junior team captain Maddie Georges, who tops CHS in assists and solo blocks, while tying with Olivia Schaffeld for most service aces.

Lucy Tenore is the current leader in kills and block assists, with Alita Blouin far out in front in ringing up digs.

It’s a well-balanced team, one capable of making a deep run this season.

Which just means you’ll get more of these stats recaps.

So, winner-winner.

Slip-sliding away.

For a half hour or more Monday night, the undefeated Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team looked very good.

Then, things splintered a bit, and now the Wolves have their first loss of the season.

It’s a non-conference defeat, and it came against Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, a solid private school foe — and former league rival — who exited with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 victory.

The loss drops Coupeville to 3-1, but the Wolves get a chance to bounce right back Wednesday when they travel to Darrington, where they’ll seek their fourth Northwest 2B/1B League win in as many matches.

Moving forward, CHS will try to avoid the pitfalls of Monday’s clash with the visiting Eagles, when it spent too much of the match playing from behind.

“Errors down the stretch hurt us a bit,” said Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore.

“When you’re climbing out of holes, and keep on having to do it, that’s always tough, especially against a team which takes care of the ball reasonably well.”

Coupeville battled CPC every step of the way in the opening set, with the two teams combining for 12 ties, the final one at 23-23.

The Wolves got to that last stalemate thanks to a nasty spike off the fingertips of Lucy Tenore, which came shortly after freshman Savina Wells blistered another winner.

Coupeville’s big hitters, which include Olivia Schaffeld and Jill Prince, were clicking, and the Wolves matched the Eagles kill for kill.

But CPC slipped away with the opening frame after Coupeville sent a serve long at 23-23, then muffed a play right on top of the net while facing set point.

Schaffeld had opened play with a spike which tore a chunk out of the floor in the back corner of the court, before fab frosh Lyla Stuurmans unleashed a collection of heat-seeking missiles of her own.

Freshman Lyla Stuurmans popped five kills against Cedar Park Christian.

The cousin of former Wolf MVP Payton Aparicio is already making a name for herself, thunking winners from the left side, then stamping her feet on the ground in joy as her squad celebrates around her.

Whitmore has a very-young team this time around, with two freshmen (Stuurmans and Wells) and a sophomore (Schaffeld) starting, with another sophomore, Grey Peabody, showing great promise.

Toss in a collection of juniors, who had a pandemic-shortened sophomore campaign, and no active seniors, and the Wolves are still a work in progress.

Case in point, the second set.

Coupeville came out strongly, with Wells and Prince spraying winners, while Schaffeld and Tenore teamed up to stuff a CPC gunner at the net.

But after trailing just 13-11, things went sideways for a bit, with the Eagles mounting a 12-3 surge to close out the frame.

That downward trend from the Wolves carried over to the start of the third set, with CPC blowing out to a 5-0 lead, then stretching it out to 18-10.

While Coupeville’s young guns couldn’t get all the way back, they did find some nice grit in their game, playing the Eagles straight-up the rest of the way.

Schaffeld collected back-to-back winners, Prince staggered CPC with some ferocious blows, and the Wolf role players came full-tilt in the final stages of the match.

“That one right there, she was an animal on the back row,” Whitmore said as Ryanne Knoblich stopped to say good night to her coach.

“She and (libero) Alita (Blouin) are really finding their niche,” he added. “And while it won’t necessarily show up in the stats, Lyla passed really well tonight.”

While he would have liked getting a win against a tough-nosed rival, Whitmore remains positive, already looking forward to a chance for his players to fine-tune their games.

“We’ll learn from this,” he said. “We’ll head back to practice tomorrow and focus on the importance of the first half of every set.”

While the Wolves lost the match, two of their juniors did reach personal milestones, which were hailed by team manager Abby Mulholland.

Georges collected her 300th career assist midway through the night, while Blouin passed 100 digs.

After playing its opener with just seven players, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team was back at full-force Tuesday, and visiting Mount Vernon Christian didn’t have a shot.

With fab frosh Savina Wells raining down a team-high 12 kills in her debut, and all of her more-experienced mates chipping in with solid efforts, the Wolves romped to a 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 win in their home opener.

Now a crisp 2-0 on the season, CHS jumps right back into things with another Northwest 2B/1B League match on its home floor Thursday. This time it’s Orcas Island visiting.

Facing off with the always-plucky Hurricanes, Coupeville shot itself in the foot at times early in Tuesday’s match, with service errors disrupting momentum.

But then things clicked into place.

“After a bit of a shaky start, pretty clearly working out the nerves, we got going and it was fun to watch,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore.

A 9-2 run sparked by the play of Taygin Jump and Lucy Tenore flipped things around in the opening set, before Coupeville really settled in and played as a finely-tuned machine.

“Set two we were much more relaxed and focused,” Whitmore said. “Our passing was particularly strong and (setter) Maddie Georges was able to move the ball around, getting all of our hitters involved.

“Set three had a couple rough stretches where we let them creep back into the game, but ultimately I was excited to see our veterans take charge, leading the newcomers through the jitters and to a strong finish.

“We will work on cleaning up a lot,” he added. “But tonight was about showing up for the home crowd and acclimating our newcomers to the environment.”

Coupeville, which lost four key players to graduation, has a mix of semi-veterans and newbies on its roster, including several freshmen capable of making an impact from day one.

“In her varsity debut, Savina Wells did a fantastic job of learning how to connect with Maddie’s set, in addition to playing six rotations,” Whitmore said.

“Athleticism aside, she is learning the game at a rapid pace and then brought some heat on the left-side attack.

“Also in her first outing in the varsity uniform, Lyla Stuurmans did well in the back row and the front,” Whitmore added. “With the attempts she was given, she hit efficiently on the left side and will just continue to elevate her game.”

It wasn’t all about the freshmen, however, as Coupeville’s pack of battle-hardened juniors like Georges, Tenore, and Jill Prince form the core of the Wolf squad.

Lucy had another efficient night on the right side and has really worked hard to improve her form and flow on the attack,” Whitmore said.

Olivia Schaffeld was back in the middle and did a strong job. She even brought four aces to the stat sheet and looked comfortable flowing with the game,” he added. “Alita Blouin took a lot of receptions tonight and then was really mentally dialed-in reading the incoming attack.”

Prince, an Honorable Mention All-Conference player as a sophomore, continues to raise her game, as well.

Jill was working really hard in transition and making herself available in the middle,” Whitmore said. “It won’t go in as a stat, but her drive to attack the ball opens up gaps for the other attackers to have room to hit.

“Very proud of how she and Maddie are working together for their connection. And Maddie was across the stat sheet, dishing assists as usual, but also a few aces, a couple kills on the setter dump, and even a solo block.”

Toss in strong work from others such as Ryanne Knoblich and Grey Peabody, and it’s a deep and promising roster already locked-in on piling up wins as the Wolves chase two-time defending state champ La Conner in the NWL.

“All-in-all, a big team effort for the win, and we will keep looking at practice as our time to push and get better, while showcasing our work on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Whitmore said.

“This group has very strong chemistry, and it is a fun thing to watch when they get going and flowing together.”

Tuesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 11 digs, 1 assist, 4 aces
Maddie Georges
— 2 kills, 3 digs, 22 assists, 3 aces, 1 solo block, 1 block assist
Taygin Jump
— 3 digs, 1 ace
