Wolf booters save the day!!

A few more grey hairs for the coach, but a win to save the day.

Despite squandering a three-goal lead, the North Whidbey Deception FC-01 boys’ soccer squad escaped with a thrilling 4-3 win over its Crossfire arch-rivals Saturday, thanks largely to its Coupeville mercenaries.

Matthew Kelley poked home the winning goal, off of an assist from fellow Wolf Aram Leyva, to pull out the victory.

With time running down, Leyva forced an attack on the goal, then slid the ball to Kelley, who drew the net-minder out.

Once he had the Crossfire goalie in no man’s land, Kelley popped the ball over his head for the eventual winning score.

The comeback was necessitated after the Crossfire, who had tied the Deception in two previous meetings, ripped off three straight goals to climb back into the game.

Whidbey had jumped out to a large lead off of a penalty kick, a goal set up by Kelley and a booming score from 20-yards out off of Leyva’s toe.

The win sent the Deception into sole possession of first place in their league.

All your scores belong to Coupeville.

Well, almost all of them.

Wolf players accounted for all but one goal Saturday, as the North Whidbey Islanders boys’ FC-01 soccer squad pummeled a Seattle team 7-1.

Matthew Kelley led the way with a hat trick, twice scoring on plays where he bounced the ball over his defender, slipped around him and then drilled the ball into the corner of the net as it came down.

“Never seen anything like it!,” said proud papa Pat Kelley.

Hot on his heels was teammate Aram Leyva, who tallied two goals in the game’s opening five minutes.

Jake Mitten rounded out the Coupeville scoring brigade with a booming 20-yard shot that came off a nice set-up from James Wood.

The only goal scored by a non-Wolf was set up by a Cow Town kid, as North Whidbey drew a penalty kick when Coupeville’s Sam Wynn was de-cleated on a play.

While he didn’t score a goal, Sage Downes also made his presence felt, setting up one of Kelley’s scores with his usual crisp passing.

The Islanders return to action Sept. 19 when they play a Crossfire squad at Fort Nugent.

Play the best to be the best.

Of course, if you play the best as you’re working your way up, it’s quite likely you take some licks along the way.

Such was the case last weekend for the North Whidbey Islanders FC-01 boys’ soccer squad.

The Islanders, who claim several Coupeville players on their roster, faced off with four Division 1 squads and emerged from tournament play with a 0-3-1 record.

Whidbey was a Division 3 team last year, and was also playing down five starters.

Even in the losses, the Islanders got strong play from their Wolf gunslingers.

Matthew Kelley collected two goals and two assists during the tourney, while Aram Leyva and Sage Downes each notched a goal.

Jake Mitten and Samuel Wynn sparkled on defense for Whidbey, while newcomer Jean Lund-Olsen made a stellar debut as a defender.

The Islanders begin league play Sept. 5.

Booters fire away!!

No one is getting the soccer ball back until Jake Mitten (5) is ready to let go of it.

The effort was there, just not the victories.

Despite putting up a strong effort, the North Whidbey Islanders FC-01 boys’ soccer squad, which features a number of Coupeville booters, dropped three of four games in Redmond last weekend.

Whidbey wraps its summer season in two weeks with an appearance at the Rimland Classic in Bellingham.

Playing against top-level competition in Redmond, the Islanders netted a scoreless tie against a Crossfire Select squad in the highlight of their weekend.

They had a ton of shots, many from close range, but couldn’t quite pull the trigger enough times to make a run deep into tourney play.

In the team’s three losses, Coupeville’s Matthew Kelley netted a goal off of a corner kick, while Aram Leyva notched an assist on a different score.

Fellow Wolves Sam Wynn, Michael Laska, Sage Downes and Jake Mitten all chipped in with strong play, with Wynn making a stellar impression on defense.

North and Central united to knock off South.

Sparked by its Coupeville mercenaries, the North Whidbey Islanders Boys FC-01 soccer squad ran out to a big lead Wednesday, then held on in the waning moments to edge host South Whidbey 3-2.

Matthew Kelley punched in the game’s first goal, on a shot into the corner of the net from 10 yards out, and he and fellow CMS booters Aram Leyva and Jake Mitten kept up the pressure all game.

The Islanders rolled out to a 3-0 lead at the half, then gave up two goals in the final four minutes of the game to make the final score seem a little closer than it really was.

With the win, North Whidbey improved to 4-1 in league play. It closes regular season play with a game at Marysville this weekend.
