Hunter Smith

Your puny “rules” cannot contain Hunter Smith.

The Coupeville High School junior basketball sensation was named an Athlete of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association for his stellar play in his team’s recent win over Klahowya.

This, despite the fact Smith was honored four months ago, way back in week one of the 2016-2017 school year, for his play on the gridiron.

If you look at the WIAA “rules” for the award, supposedly you can only win it once in an academic year.

Rules were made to be broken…

Mia

Mia Littlejohn

Doin’ work on the pitch, where she has 19 goals in eight games this season.

Someone out there is finally paying attention to Cow Town.

We’re only four weeks into the fall sports season and Coupeville High School has already nailed its second Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Athlete of the Week.

This time around it’s junior booter Mia Littlejohn, hailed for her work against Mount Vernon Christian and North Mason.

She scored seven goals between those games — both Wolf wins — part of her state-high 19 scores this season.

Littlejohn, who took home a certificate and a snazzy new beanie, joins Hunter Smith, who was honored in Week #1 for his work on the gridiron.

Hunter Smith wasted no time.

The Coupeville High School junior jumped on things right out of the gate and was tabbed as an Athlete of the Week winner Friday by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Getting the honor out of the way in week one of the 2016-2017 sports schedule takes all the pressure off, as athletes can only win once in a school year.

Smith, who was honored for his play in the Wolves 41-10 season-opening shredding of football arch-rival South Whidbey, joins a list of distinguished CHS athletes to win the award.

Other recent Wolf winners include three-time honoree Makana Stone, Katrina McGranahan and Josh Bayne.

Smith was a two-way terror last Saturday, picking apart the Falcons on both sides of the ball.

He scored three touchdowns, two on passes from Hunter Downes and one on a 76-yard kickoff return to put a final stamp on the rout.

Between his receiving, rushing and return duties, Smith rolled up more than 200 all-purpose yards.

Capping his night, he also picked off two South Whidbey passes.

That gives Smith 10 interceptions for his career, just two shy of tying Bayne’s career record among Wolf gridiron greats.

“FREE Seahawk tickets!!!!!!!!!!!!” (John Fisken photo)

This could be a major win-win.

From now until Nov. 14, Coupeville High School student/athletes have an opportunity to net a prize package worth $1,500 for themselves and their school.

The Seattle Seahawks and CenturyLink will honor a prep athlete each week during the fall sports season, and nominations can be made by just about anyone.

Each week’s winners will cop:

  • $1,000 donation to their school’s athletic department
  • In-School presentation hosted by sponsor(s)
  • Personalized 2016 Nike Seahawks Jersey
  • Custom Seahawks football
  • Two game tickets and sidelines passes to a Seahawks game of Sponsors’ choosing
  • Recognition on the HawkVision video board
  • Recognition in a Seahawks game day broadcast
  • Recognition on Seahawks.com
  • CenturyLink High School Athlete of the Week letterman jacket patch

Unlike the WIAA Athlete of the Week award, which is aimed at a specific performance, this award will be granted based on three criteria: dedication to academics, community involvement and leadership/reliability as demonstrated in their sport.

It’s simple. Follow the link below and you can nominate any Wolf athlete you want.

Almost.

For some reason, if you look deep into the rules, boys tennis is not listed among the eligible sports.

Wolf coach Ken Stange (and his racket) are on their way to “discuss” the matter with the responsible parties right now.

That leaves volleyball, football, girls soccer and cheer as the Coupeville sports which fit the criteria.

The more time and effort you put into answering the questions, the better chance your athlete has of rising to the top and earning themselves, their team and CHS a well-deserved moment in the spotlight.

McGranahan flings some heat.

One game was all it took for Katrina McGranahan to get some love.

The Coupeville High School sophomore became the second Wolf this school year to be named a Player of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

McGranahan was honored for her performance in the pitcher’s circle during a 4-1 win over arch-rival South Whidbey on Opening Day Saturday.

She went the distance, fanned 12 Falcons, played spotless defense and supported herself by scoring twice while at the plate.

With her win in week 27 of the 2015-2016 school year McGranahan joins CHS senior Makana Stone, who was honored during basketball season (week 15), in receiving the WIAA honors.

Athletes can receive the award once in a given school year.
