Skyy Lippo

Skyy Lippo continues to soar in the dance world.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, twin sister of Wolf three-sport star Joey Lippo, was recently named a ballet company captain with the Whidbey Island Dance Theatre.

She is believed to be the youngest dancer ever named a captain.

The honor traditionally goes to a ballet dancer who is a junior or senior in high school, but this time around theater directors were more concerned with leadership skills than scanning birth certificates.

“They were not looking at age; they were looking for someone who could really connect with the girls and work well with the staff,” said mom Connie Lippo.

Char Brown, the artistic director, described her as compassionate and takes time to notice each of the others,” she added.

Skyy Lippo has danced since she was five.

A double play and a Tour en l’air on the same play? Nice.

"Um, no thanks ... I'm good..."

“Um, no thanks … I’m good…”

The diamonds overflow with action.

Every time you turn around, another Central Whidbey Little League team is playing, and never-say-take-a-nap photo man John Fisken is there to click away each time.

Or, at least it seems that way.

The action above covers a wide array of divisions, with a little bit for everyone.

Skyy Lippo, seen here after a performance of “The Nutcracker,” will be back on the stage this weekend.

The Wolves will be dancing in Falcon territory this weekend.

Coupeville High School freshman Skyy Lippo will be one of the dancers displaying their stellar ballet moves when the Whidbey Island Dance Theatre presents its rendition of “Giselle.

Giselle is a romantic ballet first performed by the Ballet du Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris in 1841.

It tells the tale of a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is gettin’ hitched to someone else.

The cad…

The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, bring Giselle back from her grave with the intention of taking out her former crush.

Spoiler: the plan fails and love wins the day.

Performances are April 24-26 at South Whidbey High School’s Performing Arts Center (5675 Maxwelton Rd in Langley), with showtimes 7 PM Friday, 2 and 7 Saturday and 2 Sunday.

The dance goes on.

The Whidbey Island Dance Theatre is currently in the middle of putting on its 22nd annual production of The Nutcracker.

Notable for Coupeville fans is the fact two Wolves are dancing in the ballet — CHS freshman Skyy Lippo and junior Sylvia Hurlburt.

You still have three chances left to see the duo on stage, with two performances Saturday (2 PM and 7:30) and one Sunday (2 PM).

The show is being held at South Whidbey High School’s Performing Arts Center (5675 Maxwelton Rd in Langley).

Cassidy Rydell

Cassidy Rydell

Cassidy Rydell has never stopped dancing, she’s just picked up a new style.

The Coupeville High School senior, a 13-year veteran of the world of ballet, has brought her dance moves into the world of cheerleading this year.

As a first-time member of the Wolf cheer squad, which is coached by former Seattle Sonics dancer Cheridan Eck, she’s been able to keep her love of dance going, even if she’s no longer wearing toe shoes.

“I wanted to keep doing something similar and cheer happened to be exactly what I was looking for,” Rydell said. “Being a former dancer, I love it when we have routines that involve any type of dancing; whenever we learn something new it creates a new challenge.”

And while CHS officials still want to call cheer an activity and not a sport, Rydell knows first-hand the sweat, blood and tears that go into being ready to perform.

“Try being able to do the splits and kick sky high,” she said. “Can the football players do it? No.

“It’s the same when people say that dancing isn’t a sport,” Rydell added. “They obviously haven’t seen the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.”

As she plans her future, she has goals of competing in track for the Wolves this spring and majoring in Communications in college.

Rydell is a member of the National Honor Society and picks English as her favorite class.

While she’s skilled in the classroom, her talents stretch out far beyond taking tests.

“I play piano and I love it!,” Rydell said. “I also enjoy singing, writing and, of course, dancing.”

Music is a huge part of her life, whether it’s her own performances or listening to her favorite bands, which include “my two all-time favorite bands at the moment, Owl City and OneRepublic.”

Through everything, she counts a close family member as her biggest fan and confidant, knowing that she’ll always be there to support her in whatever endeavors she picks up.

“My mom has had a HUGE impact on my life, she is the main reason I am who I am today,” Rydell said. “She is my best friend and I can tell her everything!”
