Mother Nature has entered the chat.

The season opener for Coupeville High School baseball was washed away Saturday, as a planned trip to Blaine was called off before the Wolves could hit the road.

The official prognosis: a night of steady rain left the Borderites field unable to host a game.

No word yet on whether the non-conference clash will be rescheduled.

For now, the Wolf diamond men turn their attention to their planned home opener, which is set for Tuesday, Mar. 18.

Meridian is slated to come to Cow Town for that rumble, with the first pitch set for 4:00 PM.

If Mother Nature agrees.

It’s a whole new world.

After advancing to the state tourney two seasons in a row, the Coupeville High School baseball team had to fight just to keep the program alive this spring.

Losses to graduation, family moves, injuries, and veteran players opting not to suit up left Wolf coach Steve Hilborn and his staff scrambling.

But they got there, relying on a core group which didn’t flake out like others, and will open the season Saturday with a road trip to Blaine.

The roster is thin, but the spirit is strong among those who remain committed.

“Looks like we’ll have a team. We have 11 right now,” Hilborn said. “Several kids new to baseball but with lots of potential.

“We’re working on basics and having fun,” he added. “And that’s the name of the game.”

Leading the way will be senior Landon Roberts, who pitched, played first base, and patrolled the outfield last season.

Juniors Camden Glover and Coop Cooper provide big arms and steady bats, while freshmen Carson Grove and Jayden Little are back for a second year of varsity baseball.

Joining them will be a group of newcomers including senior Jesus Madrigal, making the jump from team manager to on-field player.

Sophomore big man Riley Lawless, freshmen Leo Rodriguez and Phin Rhodes, and 8th graders Trent Thule and Chris Zenz round out the current roster.

Junior Aiden O’Neill, a starter in center field last season, is sidelined as he recovers from surgery after a football injury but will be a key part of the team’s support crew from his perch on the bench.

It’s the trickiest season of them all.

Spring sports, which began Monday with the first day of practice, take place outdoors, where weather can have an outsize effect on things.

Will the prairie be buffeted by wind and rain? History says yes.

Will games be shuffled, often at the last second? History says yes.

Will we still write the schedules in ink, then regret that decision later? History says, were you not listening??

It’s a foolhardy plan we follow, but it’s too late to change now.

So, here are the Coupeville High School spring sports schedules, as of March 4, with a * indicating a league game.

Will everything still be in place by March 5? Best of luck on that.

Want to be in charge? Make the final call? Wear a snazzy uniform?

All of that (and more) can be yours if you step up and help local baseball and softball players by volunteering as an umpire with Central Whidbey Little League.

CWLL, which closes player registration Feb. 28, has two umpires in place for this spring, but needs more to be able to pull off the season.

James Meek, Umpire in Charge for the league, has issued the following statement:

Hello Central Whidbey Community!

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am reaching out on behalf of Central Whidbey Little League to seek assistance with our umpiring needs for the upcoming season.

Our league provides a positive and structured environment where young athletes can develop their skills, sportsmanship, and love for the game.

However, to ensure a successful season, we rely on dedicated volunteers and community members to help officiate our games.

We need umpires to support our teams and keep our games running smoothly.

Whether you are an experienced umpire or someone willing to learn, we welcome all levels of involvement.

Training and resources can be provided for those new to the role, and any time you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.

We currently have two committed umpires. However, we have softball, and minor and major league baseball needing umpires.

Your support would significantly impact our players, coaches, and the overall experience of our league.

If you or someone you know is interested in assisting with umpiring, please contact me at (360) 320-3717 or through Facebook Messenger.

We truly appreciate your consideration and any help you can offer.

Thank you for your time and support keeping youth baseball and softball a thriving part of our community.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

James Meek
Umpire in Charge
