Lippo lashes, start to finish

He did his part.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo put together a strong statistical season on the diamond this spring, even as his college baseball team struggled to win.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle, which wrapped its season with a doubleheader Sunday, finished 2-33 overall, losing its final 13 games.

Lippo, a two-sport college athlete who also plays golf for the NCAA D-III Owls, was a consistent performer on both sides of the ball, however.

He finished his junior season at UMPI ranked in the top three in 12 different offensive categories.

Lippo led the Owls in runs (22), triples (2), and walks (12), while being one of five players to appear in all 35 games.

The former CHS star was second on UMPI in batting average (.295), at-bats (122), hits (36), total bases (46), and home runs (1), and third in OPS (.735), doubles (3), slugging percentage (.377), and stolen bases (6).

Normally an outfielder for the Owls, Lippo also made three appearances as a pitcher this season, whiffing four hitters in 11+ innings of work.

During his time in Coupeville, Joey, whose twin sister Skyy is pursuing a successful dance career, played tennis, basketball, and baseball for the Wolves.

New month, new challenges

The calendar turns and things get serious.

The arrival of May marks the start of the stretch run for Coupeville High School spring sports teams, with league titles and possible postseason glory at stake.

Wolf softball, baseball, and girls’ tennis all sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League standings, while track and field has been dominant, especially on the boy’s side.

The CHS netters, who have clinched at least a tie for the conference crown, can claim sole possession with a win Tuesday at Friday Harbor.

Miss there, and they’ll get another crack May 12, when the Wolverines travel to Whidbey for Coupeville’s Senior Night.

Wolf softball only plays once in the week ahead, but everything hinges on the outcome.

The sluggers travel to Friday Harbor Thursday, and the stakes are simple.

Win, and the Wolves clinch a playoff berth. Lose, and a May 12 non-conference road game at South Whidbey is the season finale.

CHS baseball was supposed to play twice, but non-league rival Sultan bailed on a Monday trip to Whidbey, so the hardball squad will wait until Thursday, joining softball for its island-to-island trek.

Win, lose, or draw, the diamond squad has clinched the #1 seed for the District 1/2 tourney for 2B schools, where they’ll need one victory May 13 to punch a ticket to state.

What is at stake this coming week is the NWL title.

Coupeville is a half-game up on 1B Mount Vernon Christian, with the teams having split their two-game season series.

MVC has games left Tuesday with Concrete and Thursday with Orcas Island as the Hurricanes angle to stay even with the Wolves.

While the first three sports are nearing the end of the regular season, track is the first to step into the postseason, with a trip Wednesday to La Conner for the league championships.

That starts a three-meet run for glory, with districts and state up next.

As we head into a (possibly) dramatic week, a look at current standings for teams which tally wins and losses:

Hardball heroes romp to Senior Night win

Precision pitching, precision hitting.

Sparked by a five-inning no-hitter from hurler Scott Hilborn, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad pounded out 15 base knocks Saturday, routing visiting La Conner 14-1.

The Senior Night win, coming on an afternoon when the Wolves honored Hilborn, Jonathan Valenzuela, and foreign exchange student Piotr Bieda, gives CHS 10 wins in its last 11 games.

Now 12-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 14-4 overall, Coupeville sits alone in first place, a half-game up on idle Mount Vernon Christian.

The Hurricanes are 11-1 in NWL play, with two conference tilts left to play, while the Wolves finish the regular season with a road trip Thursday to play Friday Harbor.

Coupeville was supposed to have a home non-league rumble with Sultan Monday, but that game was suddenly canceled by the Turks, who are scrambling to finish their own conference schedule.

The Wolves, playing Saturday under sunny skies and with no prairie wind buffeting them for the first time all season, closed their home campaign in style.

Scott Hilborn retired the first 10 hitters he faced, surrendering only a pair of walks in the late going.

He whiffed 10 Braves, with La Conner eking out its lone run in the fourth inning thanks to a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and an RBI groundout.

Coupeville was ahead 9-0 at the moment the Braves finally got on the scoreboard, having pushed five runners across the plate in the first, three more in the second, and a lone tally in the bottom of the third.

The Wolves responded to La Conner scoring by tacking on five more runs in the fourth, pushing the game into mercy-rule territory.

All nine CHS players to see action in the game scored, with seven of them recording hits.

Freshman Chase Anderson had the hottest bat, peppering La Conner with four hits, while Jack Porter blasted a pair of doubles while racking up a team-high four RBI.

Hit-happy JV rolls to win

Lights on, bats rarin’ to go.

The first time Coupeville and Darrington clashed in a JV baseball game this season, sunset on the prairie forced a tie after six hard-fought innings.

Thursday was different, as the squads took advantage of the Loggers being able to click on field lights, allowing the Wolves time to hammer out a 16-5 win.

The victory lifts the CHS young guns to 1-4-1 on the season, with two games remaining on the schedule.

Coupeville’s JV is slated to play Monday, May 1 at home against non-conference foe Sultan, then travel to Sedro-Woolley the next day for their finale.

Thursday’s rumble under the lights was all Coupeville, all the way, though Darrington did manage to narrowly avoid being ten-runned after five innings, pushing the game to six frames before the Wolves closed things out.

Coupeville jumped on the Loggers for seven runs in the top of the first to set the mood, added a single tally in the second, then pushed three more across in the third to build an 11-2 lead.

The Wolves failed to score only once, in the fourth, tagging Logger hurlers for three more runs in the fifth and a final two in the sixth.

Coupeville’s biggest blow came from Jack Porter, who launched a legit inside-the-park home run which missed hitting the football stands beyond center field by just a few feet.

The Wolves sent three pitchers to the mound, with starter Landon Roberts whiffing six of the 18 hitters he faced.

Jack Porter came on in relief in the fourth, while Peyton Caveness was lights out in the sixth, setting three straight Loggers down on strikes.

“Peyton had a wicked off-speed pitch that froze guys,” CHS coach Jon Roberts said. “Good game under the lights! Cool experience for all.”

They might want to build a storm shelter in Darrington.

Why?

To protect the locals from the kind of missiles being rained down Thursday afternoon.

The red-hot ‘n rollin’ Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad was in town and smashed 19 hits on its way to a 16-6 win before departing town in a blaze of glory.

Twelve different Wolves collected a base knock during the decimation, even with the game mercy-ruled after five innings, as CHS won for the ninth time in its last 10 tilts.

Now 11-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 13-4 overall, Coupeville heads home for Senior Night Saturday, when it hosts La Conner (3-9, 4-11).

First pitch is 1:00 PM.

With three regular season games left, and two of those conference clashes, the Wolves have clinched the #1 seed for the District 1/2 tournament, and are tied with Mount Vernon Christian (11-1, 12-3) atop the NWL.

Facing off with a decent Darrington squad — the Loggers are a solid .500 team — CHS abused its hosts all afternoon.

The Wolves pushed four runs across in the top of the first, added a single tally in the second, then broke the game wide-open by slapping eight runs on the board in the third.

Three more visitors tapped home plate in the top of the fourth, stretching the lead all the way out to 16-1.

While the Loggers chipped away at the lead late, it came only after Coupeville coach Steve Hilborn cleared his bench.

The Wolves used two of their three freshman hurlers, with starter Coop Cooper whiffing six in three innings of work, while Camden Glover followed with two punch-outs across two frames.

Freshman catcher Chase Anderson threw out a pair of would-be base stealers, keeping Darrington honest, while the Wolves strung together hit after hit while at the plate.

Five of the knocks went for extra bases, with senior slugger Scott Hilborn leading the way with two doubles and a bombastic triple.

Young gun Glover and grizzled vet Jonathan Valenzuela each added a two-bagger, with every Wolf starter, and three back-ups, collecting hits.
