They’re back in action.

Returning to the hardwood after a two-week gap between games, the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball squad opened the three-day, 16-team Trojan Storm Classic Monday in Bellingham.

The Wolves played in the day’s opening game, squaring off with 1A Blaine in a clash where a cold-shooting middle two quarters cost them in a 44-30 loss.

The non-conference defeat drops Scout Smith’s team to 1-5 on the season, but they’ll get right back at it Tuesday and Wednesday with rumbles against yet-to-be-disclosed foes.

Monday’s matchup started as a defensive struggle, with the teams battling to a 6-6 tie heading into the first break.

But then Blaine caught fire for the next 16 minutes, using a 13-4 tear in the second frame, and a 13-6 run in the third, to pull out to a 32-16 advantage.

Coupeville didn’t go down easily, however, rallying to outscore the Borderites 14-12 in a furious fourth, with five different Wolves rattling the rim for points.

Blaine got most of its scoring from two players, with junior Kate Koreski (17) and senior Aaliyah Bowman (15) combining for 32 of their team’s 44 points.

Wolf sophomore Tenley Stuurmans banked in buckets in every quarter Monday to pace her squad with 15 points, while Haylee Armstrong knocked down six.

Kennedy O’Neill (4), Teagan Calkins (3), Ari Cunningham (1), and Danica Strong (1) also scored for CHS, with Capri Anter, Sydney Van Dyke, Adeline Maynes, and Lexis Drake all seeing floor time.

Armstrong reached a personal milestone in the loss, cracking the 150-point club, and currently sits with 154 for her prep career.

Meanwhile, Calkins (284) and Stuurmans (118) are on the cusp of their own achievements.

The former is four points shy of moving into the top 40 scorers all-time for a CHS girls’ program which launched in 1974, while the latter is two points away from cracking the top 100.

The summer hoops grind continues.

Coupeville High School boys’ basketball players traveled North earlier this week to take part in the Blaine Border Bash.

While there the Wolves squared off with teams from Stanwood, Burlington-Edison, Blaine, and Squalicum.

“Played really tough against some good squads!” said CHS coach Brad Sherman.

They left their offense at home.

Unable to generate much of an attack Saturday, the Coupeville High School baseball squad was blanked 12-0 by host Blaine, leaving the young Wolves winless on the season.

The non-conference defeat, which came against an always strong 1A hardball program, drops CHS to 0-3 on the campaign.

Up next is a return home, with the first Northwest 2B/1B League game of the season on the docket.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor Tuesday, before island-hopping for a rematch with the Wolverines two days later.

Coupeville will then close a busy week with a non-conference home game Saturday, Mar. 29 against Island rival South Whidbey.

Saturday’s game was originally set to be the season opener but was rained out.

This time around, the liquid sunshine remained at bay, but the host Borderites stayed hot all afternoon.

Blaine pushed one run across in the first, four more in the second, then tossed a five-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.

Two more runs in the fourth set the final margin, with the game mercy ruled after five frames.

Coupeville only put three baserunners aboard in this one, with the lone hit being a two-out single from Camden Glover in the top of the first inning.

Other than that, the only brief fire ignited by the Wolves came in the fourth, when Glover and Coop Cooper drew back-to-back one-out walks.

Unfortunately for CHS, the next batter popped up into a double play, with the Blaine catcher snagging the airborne ball for out #2, then nailing a straying runner at second for out #3.

Senior Landon Roberts and freshman Carson Grove teamed up on the mound for the Wolves, with Roberts picking up two strikeouts.

While they were outhit 10-1 on the day, one bright spot for Coupeville’s hardball warriors came on defense, where the visitors committed their fewest errors of the still-young season.

Mother Nature has entered the chat.

The season opener for Coupeville High School baseball was washed away Saturday, as a planned trip to Blaine was called off before the Wolves could hit the road.

The official prognosis: a night of steady rain left the Borderites field unable to host a game.

No word yet on whether the non-conference clash will be rescheduled.

For now, the Wolf diamond men turn their attention to their planned home opener, which is set for Tuesday, Mar. 18.

Meridian is slated to come to Cow Town for that rumble, with the first pitch set for 4:00 PM.

If Mother Nature agrees.

Give credit where credit is due — Blaine won; Coupeville didn’t lose.

Friday’s matchup of high-rolling softball squads was a pitcher’s duel decided by a couple of plays, and the host Borderites made a couple of stunners to seal their 4-1 non-conference win.

An inch here, a gust of wind (or lack of a gust of wind) there, and the 2B Wolves, who roll out three 8th graders and two freshmen in the starting lineup, could very well have upended their 1A rivals.

But Blaine’s pitcher pulled off a stunner of a double play to thwart one threat, and then its centerfielder went all Superman on the final play of the game to rob Coupeville of a chance to tie the game.

So, you tip your hat, you get back on the bus and mentally plan for another road trip Saturday — this one to Granite Falls — and you look at what went right.

Which was a lot of things for a Wolf team which sits at 8-3 on the season.

From Sydney Van Dyke and Madison McMillan gobbling up groundballs on defense, to Wolf catcher Teagan Calkins bursting from behind home plate to gun down runners, to leadoff hitter Haylee Armstrong getting aboard three times.

CHS came out strongly, loading the bases in the top of the first thanks to infield hits from Armstrong and Calkins packaged around a walk to McMillan.

Van Dyke then eked out another free pass to force in the game’s first run, before Blaine escaped the half inning with a strikeout.

With starting pitcher Armstrong retiring the first five hitters she faced, Coupeville held on to its razor-thin lead until late in the bottom of the second inning.

Blaine finally broke through thanks to a two-run double from its #8 hitter, inching ahead at 2-1, and the stage was set for a tense tussle.

The Wolves had their chances, getting two aboard in the third, but the Borderite hurler, while not untouchable, was hard to pin down.

And then came the web gems, which drove a stake through the hearts of CHS fans.

With a runner at first and one out in the top of the fifth, Taylor Brotemarkle smashed a red-hot liner back up the middle.

Only to see the Blaine pitcher spear the ball in the tip of her glove at the last second, then whirl to double off the runner for an inning-ending double play.

With Armstrong and Adeline Maynes combining to whiff five batters from the circle, Coupeville hung tough, and made its move in the top of the seventh.

Both Wolf pitchers walked, bringing Mia Farris to the plate with the Wolves down to their final out.

The junior slugger smoked a shot to centerfield which, on a less windy day, mighty have cleared the fence for a three-run homer.

Instead, the ball got caught in the crossflow just long enough for Blaine’s centerfielder to make a superb diving catch while on a full sprint.

What could of have been…

Instead of cutting the lead to 4-3, with Farris bouncing on second or third with the crush crew of Brotemarkle, McMillan, and Calkins on deck, it was game over.

But while the Wolves lost, coach Kevin McGranahan was thrilled with a lot of what he saw from his very young team after a very long drive to the border.

“4-1 against them is a big win in my book,” he said. “We learned today that we can hang with real good teams and if the ball bounces differently a time or two we could come out on top.

“They kept their ace in for all seven innings even though now she pitched 24 innings since Monday, and they play Lynden Christian tomorrow — a league game for them.

“I told the girls that is a very high show of respect for us and our young squad.

“Great game for us and another that will only make us better and stronger.”

Friday stats:

Haylee Armstrong — One single, two walks
Teagan Calkins — One single, one walk
Adeline Maynes — One walk
Madison McMillan — One walk
Sydney Van Dyke — One walk
