He’s fast, and he’s deadly.

Speedy senior Aidan Wilson slammed home two unassisted goals Tuesday, propelling the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad to a key victory on its home pitch.

Nipping visiting Providence Classical Christian 2-1 at Mickey Clark Field, the Wolves made a strong statement as they battle for a playoff berth.

Now 2-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-6 overall, Coupeville has three regular season games left on the schedule.

The Wolves host Lopez Island Oct. 22 and La Conner Oct. 22, before island-hopping Oct. 27 for a showdown with defending 2B/1B state champ Orcas Island.

CHS entered play Tuesday vying with PCC for the fifth, and final, playoff berth from the NWL, and made sure to claim the advantage.

“Really well-played game by both teams,” said Coupeville coach Robert Wood. “Aggressive but fair; quality movement and ideas; good build up and strong attacks.

“Wolves finally realize that if you play the game like you practice the game then good things happen.”

Wilson notched both of his goals by using his track and field speed to outrun the PCC defenders.

“Both goals for Aidan, unassisted, because he thinks it’s OK to run with the ball 60 yards and not include anyone else in the fun,” Wood said with a smile.

The scores give Wilson a team-best eight tallies on the season and push the Wolf senior’s prep career total to 11 goals.

That ties him with Zane Bundy for #6 all-time in program history, trailing just Abraham Leyva (45), Derek Leyva (38), Arama Leyva (29), William Nelson (20), and Ethan Spark (17).

Saturday’s home rumble with Lopez kicks off at 1:30 PM and is free to the public.

Second time, not as much fun as the first time.

Friday Harbor, a legitimate state title contender, exacted a bit of revenge on the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad Friday afternoon.

Winning 6-0 on their home pitch, the Wolverines earned a split in the season series while making the playoff chase a bit tougher for the Wolves.

“That team was amazing,” said Coupeville coach Robert Wood, who then went to contemplate the mysteries of the soccer world while enjoying a long ferry ride home.

The loss drops CHS to 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-6 overall, with four games left on the schedule.

Coupeville has three straight conference tilts at home coming up, with Providence Classical Christian (Oct. 18), Lopez Island (Oct. 22), and La Conner (Oct. 25) all visiting Whidbey.

The Wolves wrap the regular season with a trip to Orcas Island Oct. 27 to square off with the defending 2B/1B state champs.

Five of the nine schools playing boys soccer in the NWL make the district playoffs, joined by four teams from District 2.

Friday’s loss ultimately means more than the first time Friday Harbor and Coupeville met, when the Wolves won 3-1 at Mickey Clark Field.

For complicated scheduling reasons, that first game was against a league foe, but not counted as a league game.

Friday’s loss, however, is reflected in the conference standings.

Sometimes you get the breaks, and sometimes you don’t.

For the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad, Tuesday’s trip to Marysville was one of those days when the sports gods chose not to smile on the Wolves.

Despite getting strong play from across the roster, CHS came up on the short end of a 3-2 game with host Grace Academy.

The loss drops the Wolves to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-5 overall.

“Three mistakes at the wrong time in the wrong area…,” said Coupeville coach Robert Wood.

“That’s what happens.”

Even with his team coming out on the short end of the score, Wood was largely pleased with the play he saw from his booters.

Nick Guay was an excellent second half goalkeeper,” Wood said. “And we had very good, coordinated, disciplined play most of the day from everyone.”

Coupeville’s scores came from Preston Epp and Cole White, who both notched their third goals of the season.

Epp redirected a ball in the game’s 30th minute, taking advantage of a corner kick which bounced around and then came out to him.

For White, he put some pizazz on his goal, charging a high pass from deep in Coupeville’s end of the field, then using his noggin to flick the ball past the Grace Academy netminder, all while having a defender draped all over him.

The Wolves get back at it this Friday, heading back off of Whidbey one more time.

Coupeville’s destination is Friday Harbor, where they’ll get a rematch with a state title contender they shocked 3-1 earlier in the season.

They’re making inroads.

Playing in the most competitive 2B/1B league in the state, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad is proving it can hang with the big dogs.

The Wolves have already knocked off Friday Harbor, which finished 4th at state last season, and battled hard with defending state champ Orcas Island in a narrow loss.

Saturday, facing off with Mount Vernon Christian, one of four Northwest 2B/1B League schools to make last year’s big dance, Coupeville held the lead midway through the game, but couldn’t quite topple the Hurricanes.

Falling 4-2 on their home pitch, the Wolves slip to 1-1 in league play, 3-4 overall.

“Kids played amazing against a strong opponent,” said CHS coach Robert Wood. “Amazing fight the entire second half.”

Preston Epp leads the charge.

MVC struck first, but the Wolves roared from behind to reclaim the lead thanks to goals from Aidan Wilson and Cole White.

Wilson’s goal, which was unassisted, was his team-leading sixth of the season, and the ninth for his prep career.

White, with a nice setup from Hank Milnes, tallied his second score of the campaign, and his third all-time.

MVC attacked relentlessly, however, reclaiming the lead, then tacking on an insurance goal in the second half.

Coupeville hits the road twice next week, heading to Grace Academy Tuesday, before getting a rematch Oct. 14 with Friday Harbor.

There were so many goals, they lost track of who all scored.

But better a win with a slight blip in the stat sheet, than a loss in which no one has to tally up scores.

Emerging from the wilds of Lynnwood Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer team headed back to Whidbey riding the high of winning a rout.

Pushing Cedar Park Christian around the pitch all afternoon, the Wolves polished off their Northwest 2B/1B League rival 7-0.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 1-0 in conference action, 3-3 overall.

It also sets them up for a key matchup at home Saturday with Mount Vernon Christian (1-1 in league, 4-3-1 overall).

The second half of a doubleheader, action kicks at 3 PM, with the boys tilt following on the heels of a girls rumble between CHS and Crosspoint Academy at 1 PM.

With Cedar Park Christian being a bottom feeder among the nine schools playing boys soccer in the NWL, Coupeville coach Robert Wood shuffled things around a bit.

“Strategic game for us tonight, prepping for MVC this weekend,” he said. “New formation and bench players getting a majority of time, putting starters in support roles, restricting touches and movement.

“All to prepare for the fast, aggressive game MVC will throw at us.”

When it comes to punching the ball into the back of the net, Coupeville was led by Cameron Epp and Cael Wilson, who netted two goals apiece.

Nick Guay and Grant Steller each added a tally, while who scored the seventh goal is anyone’s guess at this moment.

Wilson, Guay, and Steller scored for the first time this season, and Coupeville now has nine booters in the scoring column during the current campaign.

UPDATE: The seventh goal has been found. It came off of the toe of Nick Guay, giving him two scores in the game.
