All the glory came early.

On a night when the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer squad suffered a rare shutout at the varsity level, junior forward Brandon Bartley made sure the same wouldn’t happen in the JV game.

Bartley’s goal, coming off of a penalty kick, combined with a strong Wolf defense headed up by goaltender Connor McCormick, lifted CHS to a thrilling 1-0 victory over visiting Lakewood Tuesday.

“A well-earned victory,” said Coupeville varsity coach Kyle Nelson.

His squad had a bit more trouble scoring, despite strong play, and fell 3-0 in the night’s second game.

“Great effort from the boys last night, evenly played game,” Nelson said. ” The ball was deflected for all of their scores, a little bit of luck.”

The loss dropped the Wolf varsity to 4-7-1 overall, 3-7 in Cascade Conference play.

With four games to play, Coupeville will essentially need a miracle to qualify for the playoffs.

The Wolves, who have beaten last year’s record, trail South Whidbey (6-2-2 in league) and King’s (6-3-1) in the race for the two 1A playoff berths from the 1A/2A league.
