The future of boys’ basketball in Coupeville is a bright one.

Two Wolf teams wrapped up an eight-week run in the Skagit County Parks and Rec SWISH League Saturday, with both squads claiming 3rd place finishes in the postseason tourney.

Coupeville’s 5th graders also won the regular-season crown, blitzing to a 7-1 record.

Meanwhile, the 6th/7th grade squad, which pulls five players from each grade, went 4-4 in regular season action.

Both teams showed great growth while squaring off with the mainlanders, something which bodes well for the future.

“For most of these players, this is their third season in this league,” Coupeville coach RayLynn Ratcliff said. “Us coaches are so proud of the work they’ve put in!

“Today they played their hearts out,” she added. “Now they’ll be working hard to compete in tournaments in the off season to continue to grow and develop.”

The first road trip is in the books.

Having opened the season with three consecutive games at home, Monday brought a new wrinkle to the lives of the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball players.

The Wolves clambered on the bus, endured a trek to the wilds of Granite Falls, and now head into the Thanksgiving break.

CMS will reemerge Dec. 3, when it travels to South Whidbey to kick off the back half of its eight-game schedule.

After that comes trips to Sultan (Dec. 5) and Lakewood (Dec. 9), before the home finale Dec. 16 against South Whidbey.

How Monday’s mission to Granite played out:

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top team snagged its first win of the campaign, polishing off the Tigers 33-26.

The Wolves rippled the nets from distance, drilling four three-balls to claim the victory.

Two of those bombs came off the fingertips of Trey Stewart, while Calvin Kappes and Chayse Van Velkinbergh each netted one of their own.

Overall, Stewart and Van Velkinburgh paced the Wolves, each netting nine points, with Diesel Eck powering through the paint for six.

Calvin Kappes (5) and Jonathan Kappes (4) rounded out the scoring attack, while Xander Beaman, Maverick Walling, River Simpson, Trenton Thule, and Kamden Ratcliff also saw floor time for the Wolves, who sit at 1-3 on the year.

Level 2:

A lower scoring affair, with Coupeville (0-4) coming up just short in an 18-11 defensive thriller.

Gracen Joiner knocked down a team-high four points, with Jacob Lujan (2), Darius Stewart (2), Cyrus Sparacio (2), and Cole Van Dyke (1) also scoring.

Colton Ashby, Xander Flowers, Liam Stoner, Mario Martinez, Jonah Meek, and Aiden Wheat rounded out the CMS roster on this day.

Ready to rumble.

Level 3:

Les Queen continued his torrid scoring pace, accounting for 11 of his team’s 13 points in a loss to Granite.

Kion Tellery banked in the Wolves (1-2) other bucket, with Oliver Miller, Carson Marley, Jack Bailey, Braxton Beshear, Stoner, and Talon Gamble also in uniform.

The first baskets have been shot, the first shoes have squeaked on the hardwood.

Coupeville Middle School kicked off hoops season Wednesday, with three boys’ basketball games going down against visiting Sultan.

The tip-off was the start of a three-game homestand for CMS, which welcomes King’s and Northshore Christian Academy to town Nov. 19 and 20, respectively.

After that it’s four straight bouts on the road for the Wolves, before they close back at home Dec. 16 against South Whidbey.

How opening night went:

Level 1:

Diesel Eck rumbled down low, but always-tough Sultan proved to be a bit too much in a 37-22 win.

Coupeville’s main man in the paint led the Wolves with a team-high 13 points, while Trenton Thule and Chayse Van Velkinburgh each popped for three in support.

Jonathan Kappes (2) and Calvin Kappes (1) rounded out the scoring, with Kamden Ratcliff, Trey Stewart, and River Simpson also seeing floor time for CMS.

The Wolves showed a sharp eye at the free throw line, netting five of seven shots as a team.

Team #2:

The young Wolves struggled in the first half, then picked up their offensive flow after the break during a 43-13 loss.

Darius Stewart led CMS with six points, while Gracen Joiner banked in five, and Jacob Lujan chipped in with a bucket.

Colton Ashby, Jonah Meek, Aiden Wheat, Cyrus Sparacio, Cole Van Dyke, Xander Flowers, and Mario Martinez rounded out the roster.

Team 3:

The best result of the day, as Coupeville made off with a 20-16 win.

Les Queen had the hot hand for the Wolves, recording half of Coupeville’s points, while Liam Stoner (6), Elijah Cole (2), and Kion Tellery (2) also scored.

Charles CannonJack BaileyBraxton Beshear, Henry Jackson, and Oliver Miller also made their on-floor debuts.

Everyone is a threat to score.

With three games in the books, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams have seen 18 different players ring up a bucket or better.

The race for top honors is an intense one, as well, with seven players in double digits, and only four points separating the #4 scorer from the #1 offensive weapon.

With two games ahead next week — home affairs with Northshore Christian (Tuesday, Nov. 28) and Sultan (Nov. 30) — look for the numbers to keep shifting.

Where individual point totals stand through Nov. 24:

Nick Laska – 20
Calvin Kappes – 19
Chayse Van Velkinburgh – 17
Johnathan Jacobsen – 16
Xander Beaman – 14
Carson Grove – 12
