Mama said knock you out, so Haylee Armstrong went and threw some haymakers.

Raining down 20 of her career-high 30 points in the second half Tuesday, the Coupeville High School freshman turned a JV game against visiting Concrete from a nailbiter to a blowout.

The Wolves went into the locker room up by just a single point, only to come away with a 47-26 victory thanks to their hot-shooting guard.

The win lifts Kassie O’Neil’s squad to 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 4-6 overall, with a road trip to Chief Leschi Saturday next up on the schedule.

Tuesday’s rumble with Concrete was a sticky one for the first 16 minutes, as the two teams exchanged body blows, warily circling one another.

Armstrong popped for 10 in the first half, propelling the Wolves to an 8-4 lead after one and a narrow 16-15 advantage as everyone heading in for pep talks and (maybe) orange slices.

Whether she got to nibble on citrus or not, the fab frosh came out flexin’ in the second half.

Raining down 11 points in the third quarter alone, Armstrong spurred an 18-8 run to bust the game wide open.

She had some help, with Tenley Stuurmans and Capri Anter combining for seven points in the frame, and the Wolves kept the heat cranked up in the fourth quarter.

Closing on a 13-3 tear, CHS slammed the door shut, locked it, and threw the key away.

While Armstrong’s 30 was the best performance by any Wolf girl this season, varsity or JV, she wasn’t the only young gun to score.

Anter backed up her cousin with a solid seven-point effort, while Stuurmans (6), Brynn Parker (2), and Ari Cunningham (2) also kept the scorekeeper busy.

Ava Lucero, Lexis Drake, Bryley Gilbert, Adie Maynes, Taylor Marrs, and Chelsi Stevens rounded out the rotation for the Wolves, who have four games left in their season.

Back on the floor and getting back in the groove.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team has been sitting a lot recently, with four of the last five schools the Wolf varsity has played not having a second squad.

So, while Kassie O’Neil’s wild women fell 56-24 to always tough La Conner Tuesday night, just getting floor time is the real win.

The Wolf young guns, now 0-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-5 overall after the home defeat, get right back at it Friday, welcoming Mount Vernon Christian to town.

Tuesday’s tilt was one-sided in the beginning, but Coupeville got stronger as the game progressed, O’Neil said.

Trailing 21-3 at the first break, the Wolves came back strong in the second quarter, winning the eight-minute battle 9-7.

Freshman Haylee Armstrong, who paced CHS with 14 points, had the hot hand in the second frame, popping for six of her points.

That included a three-ball from deep.

The Wolves hung tough in the third as well, before La Conner stretched the final margin out with a solid run in the fourth to end things.

Ten players saw floor time for Coupeville, with four of them scoring on this night.

Armstrong’s 14 led the way, while her cousin, Capri Anter, banked in five.

Tenley Stuurmans rippled the nets for three, and Brynn Parker knocked down a bucket to round out the Wolf attack.

Adie Maynes, Lexis Drake, Taylor Marrs, Chelsi Stevens, Bryley Gilbert, and Ava Lucero also played, picking up valuable experience.

Six pistons firing as one.

Playing with no reserves Monday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad scorched visiting Providence Classical Christian, dismantling their private school foes in straight sets.

By the time they were done, the Wolves had a 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 non-conference victory in hand, which lifts them to 4-6 on the season.

Despite playing with a thin bench night in and night out, the freshman-dominated team has won three of its last five.

Next up, road trips to The Bush School in Seattle Tuesday and Darrington Thursday, as Ashley Menges and her spikers carve a path of success.

Monday night, the Wolves dominated almost start to finish, with just a brief dry spell in the (practice) third set.

Fab frosh Haylee Armstrong came out on fire, peppering PCC with nasty serves to reel off the first five points of the night.

That went over so well, the rest of the Wolves decided to do the same thing, with Capri Anter, Lexis Drake, and Chloe Marzocca reeling off their own hot streaks at the line.

The visitors had trouble keeping a rally alive, at least in the early going, and it didn’t get much easier in the second set.

Myra McDonald cranked an ace off of a rival’s arm, before Marzocca launched several lasers which set up brief rallies won by the Wolves thanks to note-perfect tips from cousins Armstrong and Anter.

Carly Burt also snapped off a gorgeous ace, and Coupeville romped through the first two frames, securing the win.

But, since this is JV volleyball, they always go on to play a third set for practice — to a full 25 points — even when one team has clearly dominated the proceedings.

Given a third chance, PCC proved to be scrappy, building a third-set lead and holding it most of the way.

At a certain point the Wolves flipped a switch, however, with Anter and Marzocca flicking winners on balls which sliced off any fingertips in their way.

Armstrong, down on the floor and using part of her jersey to clean a slick spot on the floor, bounded back up to position her teammates for success with high, arcing sets.

Finally, Drake ended the night on a crowd-pleasing run at the service line, reeling off seven straight points to slam the door shut for good.

Monday stats:

Capri Anter — 3 kills, 3 digs, 8 aces
Haylee Armstrong — 4 kills, 2 digs, 9 assists, 10 aces
Carly Burt — 1 dig, 1 ace
Lexis Drake — 3 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist, 3 aces, 1 solo block
Chloe Marzocca — 4 kills, 4 digs, 1 assist, 4 aces
Myra McDonald — 1 ace

If you’re on the floor, you’re on the floor.

The Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad played with the minimum six players Thursday, with everyone in uniform bringing big effort.

While the Wolves, who had five freshmen among their active players, couldn’t topple visiting Orcas Island, they did push the Vikings in a 25-18, 25-18 loss.

The conference defeat drops Coupeville to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-3 overall, with a trip to La Conner Sept. 26 next up on the schedule.

The young Wolves battled hard in the opening set, building an early lead thanks to back-to-back aces from Capri Anter.

The fab frosh cracked one of those winners off of a Viking player’s arm, the ball hitting bone and making the sound of a melon dropped off the Empire State Building.

Myra McDonald goes low for a shot.

Myra McDonald collected her own ace shortly after, but on a ball which caught the net, hung in the air for an eternity, then flopped over the other side, burrowing its way into the ground as several Orcas players swung and missed.

That staked Coupeville to a 6-4 advantage, but despite some strong work at the net from Anter, the Vikings pulled away, reclaiming the lead and stretching it out.

The second set, played quickly as Orcas prepared to ankle it to the ferry, proceeded in much the same style.

Coupeville sparkled early, this time with McDonald lashing a winner and Chloe Marzocca crushing a nasty service ace, before the Vikings used a deeper roster and older players to seize the advantage.

The Wolves got stellar all-around play from Lexis Drake and Haylee Armstrong, while Anter soared high for a tip winner and Dakota Strong killed the dreams of an Orcas rival by stuffing her shot at the net.

Thursday stats:

Capri Anter — 3 kills, 3 aces
Haylee Armstrong — 4 assists, 1 ace
Lexis Drake — 1 kill
Chloe Marzocca — 1 dig, 2 aces
Myra McDonald — 1 kill, 2 aces

Capri Anter watches diamond action unfold. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Sports is the great uniter for Capri Anter.

The three-sport athlete, who plays volleyball, basketball, and softball, uses athletics to build strong relationships with her teammates.

“I enjoy getting to play with others, and, when I don’t know them, I get to know them more during the sport,” Anter said.

Part of a rock-solid group of incoming freshmen Wolf student/athletes, she’s already worn a high school uniform, playing with Coupeville’s varsity softball squad as an 8th grader this past spring.

Anter saw time in the pitcher’s circle, flinging heat at rival hitters, while also racking up some offensive stats, including cracking a double in a home win over La Conner.

But while she can join teammate, and cousin, Haylee Armstrong, as five-year softball players if everything works out, it’s an indoor sport which is her current top pick.

“My favorite sport is volleyball,” Anter said. “Because I love that my teammates are very supportive even when you or someone messes up on accident.

“I also love that my teammates always tell me what I need to fix, and how to fix it when the coaches are busy helping others.”

Away from the diamond or court, Anter can be found hanging out with family and friends, watching “mainly scary movies like Smile and It,” and enjoying music from a wide range of genres.

“Pop, rock, some country, rap, and some more,” she said.

Math class is her favorite so far, while Anter likes to draw pictures for those close to her while “on the phone with one of my friends or just listening to music.”

With three sports on the menu, she’s got a lot going on, but is merely doing what she loves.

While still a fairly young athlete, Anter takes a clear-eyed view of what she brings to her teams, and where she’d like to continue to grow.

“I think my strengths as an athlete are that since I stay pretty active in them and I enjoy them a lot, I try really hard to do the best I can to get better at them, especially volleyball and softball,” she said.

“The areas I’d like to work on are communicating more and getting to the ball,” Anter added.

Her support staff is large, and she happily leans on them for encouragement and positive reinforcement.

“There are some people who have made an impact on me and helped make me the person I am,” Anter said.

“Those people are Katie (Marti), Mia (Farris), Jada (Heaton), Grey (Peabody), Teagan (Calkins), Haylee (Armstrong), and Taylor (Brotemarkle).

“Also, all my coaches, family that have played these sports, friends, and friends’ family that have played these sports.”

With her high school days ahead of her, Anter is approaching her new adventure with an open heart.

“My goals are to have positive self-talk, communication, and listen to whomever is trying to help me better myself.”
