CHS grads burn brightly on college track circuit

They’re pushing hard for the finish line.

Coupeville grads Logan Martin and Tate Wyman were both in action Friday, as they near the end of their collegiate track and field season.

Martin, a sophomore at Central Washington University, claimed sixth in the discus at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Ellensburg.

He launched a season-best throw of 138 feet, three inches to kick off a busy weekend.

Martin will get back at it Saturday, when he competes in the hammer throw, his premier event.

Meanwhile, Wyman, a freshman at Oregon Tech, competed in the Cascade Conference Championships in Klamath Falls.

He ran a leg on a 4 x 100 relay crew which earned sixth place, hitting the tape in 42.64 seconds, then came back around to vie in the 110-meter hurdles.

Wyman also finished sixth in that event, zipping across the line in 16.45 to earn three points for Oregon Tech in the team standings.

Wolf alumni reunite at college track meet

Wolves may wander, but ultimately, they come back together.

Coupeville grads Tate Wyman and Logan Martin attend different colleges, but Saturday they were both in Clackamas for the Larry Byerly Invite.

Wyman, a freshman at Oregon Tech, ran in the 110 hurdles and 200, setting a PR in the latter and just missing a PR in the former.

He hit the tape in 23.66 seconds in the 200 and zipped across the line in 16.53 in the hurdles, just shy of his collegiate best of 16.51.

Meanwhile, Martin, a sophomore at Central Washington University, chucked the discus 130 feet, 10 inches. finishing 15th out of 48 competitors.

That came on the heels of a fourth-place finish in the hammer the day before.

Martin actually pulled double duty Saturday, competing while also assisting keeping field events humming along.

“They actually took his construction management skills and put him to work to help figure out the measuring system,” said dad Bob. “He’s working and throwing today.”

Wolf grads throwin’ across the USA

East coast to West coast, there’s a former Wolf throwing everywhere.

Coupeville grads Taygin Jump and Logan Martin were both in action at the collegiate level Friday, with the former in New York and the latter in Oregon.

Jump, a freshman at Plattsburgh State, was at the RPI Under the Lights Invitational in Troy, where she finished seventh in the javelin (out of 22 competitors) and 8th in the hammer throw (out of 24 chuckers).

Her throws landed 83 feet, two inches, and 112-06, respectively.

Meanwhile, Martin, a Central Washington University sophomore, was busy at the Larry Byerly Invite in Clackamas, a day after competing in Spokane.

He earned fourth in a 33-man field in the hammer throw Friday, lobbing the implement 174-01.

During their CHS days, both former Wolf aces were multi-sport stars.

Jump played volleyball in addition to her track and field activities, while Martin was on tennis, basketball, and soccer squads before earning three second-place performances at the state track meet his senior season.

Hammer flies, Martin celebrates

He was ready for the spotlight.

Coupeville grad Logan Martin, now a sophomore at Central Washington University, won the hammer throw Thursday at the Whitworth Twilight meet in Spokane, crushing his foes.

The former Wolf chucked the implement 179 feet, which put him way ahead of runner-up Cody Wheeler of Whitworth, who notched a throw of 156-01.

In all, Martin bested a field of 15 athletes.

He also competed in the discus at Thursday’s meet, earning sixth place (out of 20 throwers), chucking it 135-01.

Martin, a four-sport star during his CHS days, will get right back at it Friday, when he travels to Portland to throw the hammer in the Larry Byerly L & C Invite.

Logan Martin, living up to the hype.

Logan Martin didn’t have much down time Friday.

The Coupeville grad, now a sophomore at Central Washington University, threw in three events at the John Knight Twilight meet in Monmouth, Oregon.

Martin’s best showing came in his premier event, the hammer throw, where he placed second out of 16 competitors, launching the implement 173 feet, one inch.

He was nearly two feet ahead of the third-place chucker, and hot on the heels of eventual winner Donaven Humphries of Clackamas College.

While the hammer is where Martin wows the audience, he also competes in the shot put and discus, and placed in the top half of the field in both events in Oregon.

The former Wolf finished 11th (out of 23 throwers) in the shot put with a heave of 40-07.75 and 12th in the discus (out of 24 hurlers), with his throw plummeting back to Earth at the 120-09 mark.

His performance Friday continues a life-long odyssey of being really, really good at athletic pursuits, as Martin played soccer, tennis, and basketball in addition to track and field during his CHS days.

Central Washington is next scheduled to compete April 11 at the Whitworth Twilight meet in Spokane.
