Jay Roberts

He’s still on the big record board at Coupeville High School, but Jay Roberts continues to earn awards long after his prep sports days.

The Wolf grad, a father of three stellar athletes of his own, was tabbed as the 2024 Builder of the Year by the Building Industry Association of Washington.

Roberts was part of a 4 x 100 track team that set a school record back in 1986 — and that mark still stands almost four decades later.

These days Jennifer’s husband, and Madeline, Ally, and Grace’s dad, is the Vice President of Cascade Custom Home and Designs.

After working alongside big bro Jon for many years in Coupeville, he now lives in Chelan — where his youngest daughter plays volleyball and softball — and continues to charge full steam ahead in the building biz.

Jay, son of Sandy and Susan, has served as the President of the BIAW while also chairing that group’s Legislative Policy Committe.

Plus, he’s now a YouTube star. So, there’s that, too.

The dynasties roll on.

Columbia River and Chelan captured 2A and 1A state volleyball titles Saturday, respectively, which means a pair of former Wolves returned to the winner’s circle.

For Columbia River, which is led by former Coupeville High School coach Breanne Smedley, it’s the program’s fourth consecutive crown.

The Rapids, who were the #3 seed, toppled Orting and Ridgefield, before upsetting #2 Burlington-Edison in four sets in the semifinals.

Smedley’s crew then held off a match point against top-ranked Ellensburg in the final, rallying for a 25-19, 23-25, 13-25, 26-24, 15-8 victory.

Meanwhile, in the 1A tourney, Chelan, whose roster includes former CMS student Grace Roberts, made history by claiming a fifth consecutive title.

That ties the Washington state all-classification record, set by 4A Mead.

The top-seeded Mountain Goats didn’t drop a set across their four state matches this year.

Roberts, daughter of CHS grads Jay and Jennifer Roberts, is a sophomore middle blocker who played for Coupeville through middle school before a family move to the Eastern half of the state.

It’s a wrap on summer hoops.

Or at least the official part, as Coupeville High School players and coaches go their separate ways after playing at the Chelan East vs. West Summer Classic.

The Wolves played four games across three days, bonded by sleeping in close quarters, and managed to snag a fair amount of lake time before heading back to Whidbey.

Coupeville stayed at Manson High School during the trip.

“It was extremely kind of them to host us in a classroom so we could play this week,” said Wolf coach Brad Sherman.

The CHS hoops stars got floor time in Bellevue, Spokane, Chelan, as well as closer landing spots in the early summer days, giving a new-look squad a chance to start jelling.

The Wolves even played at home one night in mid-June, facing off with South Whidbey and Oak Harbor in a three-team royal rumble in the Coupeville gym.

Now, Sherman will count down the hours until the regular season rolls around this fall, content in the knowledge his players put in the work.

“Great summer of hoops with an awesome team of guys!” he said.

The hot tub calls after a long day on the hardwood.

Hopefully no one, or everyone, snores.

Back to the water.

Putting in court time.

Life’s a beach.
