Now, it gets serious.

Having tuned up with a third-place finish in a match Wednesday at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club, Christine Fields is heading off to her fourth, and final, golf postseason.

The Coupeville High School senior, who has placed at state all three seasons, claiming 5th in 1A last year, has been training and traveling with South Whidbey.

Now, the Lone Wolf will break free from the Falcons and the 1A/2A Cascade Conference and join the league her classmates have been playing in this year, the 1A Olympic League.

Fields will tee off in that league’s 18-hole tournament May 12 in Sequim, playing against golfers from Klahowya and Port Townsend for the first time this season.

Finish in the top three and she qualifies for districts May 19 at Gold Mountain.

A final trip to state would come May 27-28, if she qualifies.

Since Coupeville doesn’t have a golf team, Fields has spent the past years repping the red and black while practicing and playing with South Whidbey.

Wednesday was the final time she would step on a golf course with a full roster of her “teammates.”

The Falcons crushed visiting Sultan 118-20, with Tarra Moore taking medalist honors, carding a 30 in modified Stableford scoring over nine holes.

Fields compiled a 26, putting her right on the heels of South Whidbey’s Rosie Portillo, who netted a 27.

Now, it’s goodbye to the Falcons (except for the ones she could possibly run into down the road at state) and modified Stableford scoring, and hello to stroke play and one final run at postseason glory.

Locked and loaded.

Swinging into mid-season shape, Coupeville High School senior Christine Fields earned co-medalist honors during a three-team golf match at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club Monday.

Fields, the lone Wolf to tee it up, did battle with her training partners from South Whidbey and the rich school interlopers from Archbishop Thomas Murphy.

She carded a 34 in modified Stableford scoring over 12 holes.

Fields, a three-time state meet veteran who placed fifth in 1A as a junior, has three regular season matches left.

She travels to ATM April 23, then wraps up her final campaign with stops at King’s May 4 and Sultan May 6.

After that comes her final trek through the high school postseason, kicking off with the Cascade Conference meet May 11.

Fear the Lone Wolf.

Fear the Lone Wolf.

Christine Fields wasn’t satisfied with her performance Thursday.

“Chipping ruined my whole game!,” moaned the Coupeville High School senior golfer.

Actually, though, a quick look at the stat sheet shows that, chipping aside, it wasn’t that bad a day, as she scored 22 points under modified Stableford scoring over nine holes at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club.

That earned her a third-place tie among 11 golfers.

It just wasn’t totally what the three-time state meet vet wanted to see.

“Taking it in stride, gives me more to practice so I can be prepared for district and the parts following,” Fields said.

South Whidbey’s Tara Moore was the day’s medalist, with a 27, and the Falcons crushed Lakewood 108-43 in the team competition.

Fields, the lone Wolf to golf, trains and travels with South Whidbey.

She tied with South Whidbey’s Grace Stringer, trailing just Moore and fellow Falcon Kolby Heggenes (24).

Christine Fields, enjoying every moment she has on the golf course.

Christine Fields, enjoying every moment she has on the golf course.

Totally different, yet alike in so many ways.

One is a mom, a coach, a proud (and sometimes loud) fan, who has blessed Coupeville High School with multiple basketball-playing sons who also happen to be great guys off the court.

The other is a superb Wolf athlete who may never really get her due because she toils off in the shadows by herself, playing a solitary sport with no teammates (at least from her own school).

Yet, what Avis Mitchell and Christine Fields share, other than a birthday today, is much.

Both are classy through and through, talented, extraordinarily bright women who achieve at the highest level.

Avis has helped shape the game of many former, current and future Wolf hoops players and I would argue there is no more dedicated fan in the stands, game after game.

Plus, there was this one time where she went and bought me a sandwich at Subway and brought it to me at a CHS basketball game.

That is above and beyond; that is the mark of a freakin’ saint, I tell you!!!

Christine is a talented soccer player, but her greatest accomplishments have come on the golf course, following in the footsteps of dad Mike, a professional duffer, and older bro Austin, a state meet veteran.

Miss Fields is quite simply the most highly-decorated golfer in the history of CHS.

With three straight trips to state, capped by a 5th place finish in 1A as a junior, she has surpassed her brother for that title. Plus, she still has one more run at a title ahead of her.

But, because there are no other Wolf golfers, Fields has to train and travel with South Whidbey’s girls’ squad.

With no home matches, ever, and few fans dedicated enough to follow her hole-to-hole across the country club circuit, she rarely, if ever, gets to hear the roar a successful Coupeville baseball or softball team would.

Which is too bad, because her accomplishments deserve a round of applause.

Regardless of the sport, or a slight age difference, Avis and Christine are united by success, by their style and class, by being two of the best Wolf Nation has to give the world.

As they celebrate a joint birthday, we wish them all the best. Cause that’s what they are — the best.

“It was a pretty frustrating round.”

That being said, Coupeville High School senior golfer Christine Fields actually wasn’t that bad off the tee Monday. She just wasn’t at her prime.

Shooting a 49 (23 in modified Stableford scoring) over nine holes at Mill Creek Country Club, the one-woman Wolf wrecking crew finished in a fourth-place tie in a field of 11 golfers.

Charis Tsai of King’s was the medalist with a score of 30, followed by teammates Hannah Roh (29) and Sarah Wayne (24).

Fields score tied her with South Whidbey’s top golfer on the day, Tarra Moore.

Led by the top three scorers, King’s easily rolled South Whidbey 115-97 in the team scoring race.

With no teammates, Fields, who trains and travels with the Falcons, competes as an individual.

She’ll have more than a week to tweak her game, with her next match coming April 2.

As a three-time state meet participant — she finished fifth in 1A as a junior — she should have little trouble in rebounding.
