Like gunshots going off.

That’s what it sounds like when La Conner’s Ellie Marble — the best player Coupeville will face this season — unleashes kills at close range while bouncing high off the volleyball court.

Once in awhile, you can blunt her attack, and that of her talented teammates, such as Olivia Schaffeld and Grey Peabody did on one impressive block Tuesday night.

But stop Ellie Marble once, and she’ll lash 10,001 more winners, almost invariably leading to the latest of the 500+ wins mom Suzanne has earned while in charge of La Conner’s high-flying spiker program.

The latest of those W’s came Tuesday, as the visiting Braves staggered Coupeville’s varsity 25-12, 25-9, 25-10.

The loss drops the Wolves to 8-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 8-5 overall, while La Conner climbs to 10-0, 13-0 as it seeks a third-consecutive 2B state title.

Coupeville, a team with no seniors on its roster, has looked very strong in some matches this season.

But the Wolves have also struggled against hard-hitting, powerhouse teams, such as La Conner and non-conference foe South Whidbey.

It’s not that CHS doesn’t have players capable of unleashing big kills, as evidenced by Ryanne Knoblich launching a winner from the middle of the court which split the defense.

But the Wolves were unable to put together more than a point or two at a time, while the Braves lashed winners in great gobs.

BANG! BANG!! BANG!!!!

Marble abused the volleyball in a manner rarely seen in the CHS gym, drawing a wary shake of the head from Wolf boys basketball coach Brad Sherman, who stopped by to watch a bit of the action.

After seeing Coupeville spikers like Lyla Stuurmans and Jill Prince attempt to stand strong against the incoming blasts from Marble and her fellow La Conner snipers, Sherman was impressed, yet cautious.

“Yeah, I’m not standing in her way when she hits like that,” he said while softly shaking his head. “That stuff would hurt!”

In the midst of balls raining down around them, the Wolves dug in and fought back with some scrappiness.

Peabody, moments after teaming with Schaffeld on the block, made a sensational running save on a ball heading for out of bounds.

Add in a couple of smokin’ aces from Alita Blouin, some ferocious work at the net from Schaffeld, Prince, and Savina Wells, and strong passing by Maddie Georges, and there were bright points to savor.

Georges finished with 12 assists on the night, and now sits with 202 on the season.

Tuesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 4 digs, 1 assist, 2 aces
Maddie Georges — 8 digs, 12 assists
Taygin Jump — 4 digs
Ryanne Knoblich — 1 kill, 1 dig
Grey Peabody — 1 block assist

— 2 digs
Lucy Tenore — 1 kill, 1 ace

Jill Prince delivered a team-high five kills Tuesday, then accepted an invitation to the Homecoming dance.

Cael Wilson and Coupeville came dangerously-close to toppling Friday Harbor Tuesday night. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

Almost a major upset.

Playing some of their best ball of the season Tuesday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad pushed visiting Friday Harbor to the very edge.

Unfortunately, the Wolverines escaped with a 1-0 victory, keeping them in the hunt for the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

With the win, Friday Harbor gets to 8-3, a game back of Orcas Island (9-2), and a game-and-a-half behind league leader Providence Classical Christian (9-1).

The top four teams in the NWL advance to the postseason.

Despite playing valiantly, Coupeville falls to 3-8.

“It was a really, really good game,” said Wolf coach Robert Wood. “So much better (1000 times better) than our first game against them.

“Played around a bit with lineup and positioning and it worked great,” he added. “Stopped every attack of theirs — except one great shot from 20+ yards.

“Bummed out man… Should have had that one.”

Coupeville was supposed to return to the pitch Thursday, but a road trip to Lynnwood to play Cedar Park Christian has been cancelled as that school deals with Covid issues.

The game won’t be rescheduled.

The Wolves still host Lopez Island Saturday, in what will be Senior Night for Coupeville’s Xavier Murdy, Tony Garcia, and Miguel Puente.

CHS then closes the season with back-to-back road games against Orcas Island and Providence Classical Christian.

Scott Hilborn heads to pay-dirt. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The end zone calls.

Coupeville High School running back Scott Hilborn has scored eight touchdowns across his team’s first five games this season, which puts him in good company.

The junior, who’s also had multiple scores called back thanks to penalties by his teammates, is the sixth Wolf to score that often during the Coupeville Sports era, which runs from 2012-2021.

Josh Bayne tops that chart, bashing his way to 25 TD’s in 2014, with 15 on the ground, and 10 through the air.

And yet he doesn’t hold the school’s single-season record for rushing or receiving touchdowns, as Ian Barron (16) and Hunter Smith (11) do.

Hilborn, who has regular-season home games against Cascade (Leavenworth) and Friday Harbor left on the schedule, is on the cusp of moving up on the scoring list.

Here who he’s chasing from the last decade:

Josh Bayne (25 TDs) – 2014
Hunter Smith (14) – 2016
Sean Toomey-Stout (10) – 2018
Jake Tumblin (10) – 2012
Bryce Fleming (9) – 2012
Jake Tumblin (9) – 2013

Fall 2021 scoring stats (5 games):

Touchdowns:

Scott Hilborn – 8
Dominic Coffman – 5
Logan Downes – 2
Daylon Houston – 2
Tim Ursu – 2
Cole Hutchinson – 1
Johnny Porter – 1
Jonathan Valenzuela — 1

PATs:

Daylon Houston – 9

Conversions:

Hutchinson – 1

Points:

Hilborn – 48
Coffman – 30
Houston — 21
Downes — 12
Ursu – 12

Gwen Gustafson had five kills and seven digs Monday as Coupeville knocked off South Whidbey. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

We own you. We still own you.

The Coupeville High School JV volleyball players are a bit like Aaron Rodgers, and they proved it Monday, rallying to win big in Langley.

Pulling out a three-set thriller, the Wolves completed a season sweep of arch-rival South Whidbey, knocking off the Falcons both at home and on the road.

The 25-17, 23-25, 16-14 win in its rival’s gym lifts Coupeville’s JV to 10-2 on the season, best record of any fall sports team in Cow Town.

Now comes the epic test, as the Wolves head home to host La Conner Tuesday.

The Braves JV hasn’t lost a Northwest 2B/1B League contest in 20-plus seasons, but Coupeville is just scrappy enough to believe in the dream.

For the moment, the young Wolves can bask in showing off their grit in Langley.

Most of its matches have been straight-sets sweep this season, so having to dig down deep for the victory is solid proof Coupeville can win in different ways.

That makes for a happy coach.

“It went well!,” said Wolf JV taskmaster Ashley Menges. “We were slow to start with energy and focus, but once we settled in it was a good match!

“This was really one of our first tests this season, which showed who my competitors are and how much they wanted it” she added.

“It was a good start to the week.”

Monday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 11 assists, 4 aces
Mia Farris — 2 kills, 3 aces
Gwen Gustafson — 5 kills, 7 digs
Jada Heaton — 2 kills, 1 solo block
Issabel Johnson — 7 digs
Katie Marti — 3 kills, 1 dig, 6 assists, 1 ace, 1 block assist
Madison McMillan — 7 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces
Grey Peabody — 1 kill, 1 block assist
Aby Wood — 1 kill, 1 dig

Madison McMillan — a star is born.

Maddie Georges doled out 10 assists.

It’s the toughest 24-hours-plus they’re likely to face all season.

The Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad, which is enjoying a strong season, plays juggernauts on back-to-back nights to open what will be a busy week.

Monday night it was a trip to Langley to face South Whidbey, and the result was a bruising 25-6, 25-11, 25-11 non-conference loss.

The loss drops the Wolves to 8-4, while the Falcons, who already swept two matches from perennial powerhouse King’s, rise to 11-2.

Now, Coupeville will need to bounce back immediately, as it hosts La Conner Tuesday in a showdown for control of the Northwest 2B/1B League.

The Wolves are 8-1 in league play, with their only loss coming to the two-time defending state champ Braves, who are 9-0 in the conference, 12-0 overall.

Things stay busy after that, with Friday Harbor (1-7, 2-9) coming to Coupeville Thursday, before the Wolves return to Langley Saturday for the Island Invitational.

Monday night CHS ran into a South Whidbey squad which is playing some of its best volleyball of the season.

“South Whidbey had a very tough serve that worked us over,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore. “When given the chance, we were aggressive with our swings.”

Monday stats:

Alita Blouin — 10 digs, 1 ace
Maddie Georges — 3 digs, 10 assists
Taygin Jump — 2 digs
Madison McMillan
— 1 dig
Grey Peabody — 1 kill
Jill Prince — 2 kills, 1 block assist
Olivia Schaffeld
— 6 kills, 3 digs
Lyla Stuurmans
— 1 dig, 1 block assist
Savina Wells
— 1 kill, 3 digs
