Every day she’s making history.

Coupeville Middle School 8th grader Tamsin Ward won a pair of titles Monday at the Cascade League Track and Field Championships in Lakewood, continuing to add to her treasure chest of awards.

Rolling to victory in the shot put and high jump on day one of the two-day event, she sits with 16 wins this season and 39 for her CMS career, with five league titles to her credit.

Ward, who won the high jump as a 6th grader and the shot put and 100 as a 7th grader, will have two more shots at glory Thursday.

That’s when she and the Wolves head out for their final road trip of the season, returning to Lakewood to wrap up the seven-team meet.

Having qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200, Ward can put a stamp on her middle school days.

Her 16 wins this season are the second-most for a CMS athlete, trailing only Lindsey Roberts, who won 19 as an 8th grader in 2015, while her 39 career victories are a school record.

Ward was joined on the winner’s podium Monday by 6th grade thrower Les Queen, who edged out teammate Diesel Eck to claim the discus title.

Overall, 15 of the 24 events Coupeville competed in on day one were prelims, as the fields in the sprints were trimmed down.

Along with strong work from Ward and Queen, the Wolves also got 2nd place performances in finals from Eck (Discus), Annaliese Powers (800), Brian Thompson (Long Jump), and Laurel Crowder (High Jump).

Regardless of where each athlete finished, CMS coach Jon Gabelein came away impressed with his young stars and the weather.

“With the sun and a light breeze, it was a perfect day for a track meet,” he said.

“While we had lots of great performances, throwing, jumping, and running with the best in the league can make all of them even stronger.

“Being a part of this tougher competition may even be responsible for generating some of their PRs today.

“I am proud of all the growth and success that our athletes have worked so hard for throughout our season.”

“I can’t believe this was the last regular season meet. It feels like we just started this adventure!”

Coupeville Middle School track and field coach Jon Gabelein may be feeling like spring is flying by, but his Wolves continue to take advantage of their time in the spotlight.

Competing Wednesday at a three-team meet in Langley, CMS capped the regular season with 16 wins, a zillion PRs, and some history.

Squaring off with King’s and host South Whidbey, the Wolves won the boys 6th/7th grade team title, while earning second in the other three team tussles.

The history came courtesy 8th grader Tamsin Ward and 7th grader Diesel Eck.

Eck picked up three wins Wednesday, capturing shot put and discus titles while also running a leg on a triumphant relay squad.

That gives him 12 victories on the season, tying him with then-8th grader Alex Murdy (2019) for the most by a CMS boy in the modern era.

Ward went one better in Langley, sweeping to wins in the 100, 200, shot put, and high jump, which puts her at 14-0 heading into the Cascade League Championships June 2.

That’s second-best in CMS track history, trailing just Lindsey Roberts, who won 19 times as an 8th grader in 2015.

Ward has 37 wins across the past three seasons, most career victories by a Coupeville Middle School student.

Across the board, Coupeville athletes seized the opportunity to shine Wednesday, with many of them picking up new events as the season winds down.

“Embracing that new event PR rush!” said CMS coach Kelly Powers.

“You never know what event will resonate with you until you try it in competition and even though one Wolf remarked ‘I’ll never do THAT again!’ it’s great they’re trying things on to see what fits!

“And who knows, sometimes we come back to what challenges us … at least I hope so!

“It was great to see so many smiles and athletes that don’t take themselves so seriously they can’t have some fun!”

Every point counts.

Pulling out one of the closest wins of the spring, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ track and field team edged visiting South Whidbey 95-94 Wednesday afternoon.

Competing under cloudy prairie skies, the Wolves nabbed the victory thanks to their 6th and 7th graders, who came out on top 57-38.

That made up for the CMS 8th grade boys being on the short end of a 56-38 count.

Meanwhile, the South Whidbey girls were just a little too much for Coupeville, holding on for a 97-80 win.

The Wolf 6th/7th graders came super close in a 48-46 bout, while the CMS 8th graders fell 49-34.

That was despite Coupeville 8th grade ace Tamsin Ward making it a perfect 10-for-10 this spring, sweeping to first place finishes in the 100, 200, shot put, and high jump.

Following on the heels of 11 wins as a 6th grader, and 12 as a 7th grader, she sits with 33 career wins and counting at the middle school level.

Ward’s performance last spring tied her with future state champion Alex Murdy, who also netted 12 wins as an 8th grader in 2019.

Lindsey Roberts, who went on to win eight state meet medals as a high schooler, holds the CMS single season record with 19 wins as an 8th grader in 2015.

Seven different Wolves won two or more events Wednesday, with Brian Thompson (100, 400, Long Jump) and Diesel Eck (Shot Put, Discus, 4 x 100 Relay) hot on Ward’s heels.

Annaliese Powers (1600, 100 Hurdles), River Simpson (800, 4 x 100), Kennedy O’Neill (100 Hurdles, 4 x 200), and Malachi Chapa (High Jump, 4 x 100) were also multiple winners.

Across the board, the young Wolves embraced the opportunity to compete in front of their hometown fans at a meet which kicked off with the national anthem performed by elementary school students.

“Several of our athletes talked about how they enjoyed today’s meet more than the first two so far this season,” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“While the other meets were fun adventures, many of them noticed how their improvements and confidence were now becoming stronger due to their hard work at practice.”

And it was more than just the wins, as the Wolves racked up a string of PRs in virtually event, such as the 1600.

In that event, Cyrus Sparacio crashed through the five-minute barrier for the first time in the boys’ race, while Arianna Vinson shaved an astonishing minute-plus off her best time when the girls claimed the oval.

Coupeville gets back at it next Wednesday, May 21, when it travels down to Langley for a rematch with South Whidbey.

Private school foe King’s will trek to The Rock to make it a three-team rumble.

New Principal/Athletic Director arrives from Middle East

The transition continues.

The planned hiring of Rebecca Cays as Coupeville Middle School Principal and CHS/CMS Athletic Director was announced Sunday in a community newsletter sent out by Superintendent Shannon Leatherwood.

The hire will be official once approved by the school board.

Cays is the second major hire announced in the last two weeks, with Dan Berard tabbed as the new Coupeville High School Principal and Career and Technical Education Director.

The duo replaces Geoff Kappes, who held both principal positions until his resignation in April.

Kappes and CHS/CMS Assistant Principal Allyson Cundiff were placed on a “non-disciplinary leave pending an investigation” by Leatherwood in December.

Cundiff returned to work in March, with district officials only saying it was in “a new capacity helping with various administrative tasks that support our school buildings and student needs.”

Leatherwood has declined to address any specifics involving the investigation.

Following Kappes resignation, it was announced the principal jobs would be split, with the new hires picking up additional duties.

In addition to being the new boss for the CMS half of the campus, Cays will handle all athletic director duties for both the middle and high school.

Brad Sherman, who was AD, previously announced he was stepping down from the position to have more time for his family. He remains the CHS boys’ basketball coach and a teacher.

Cays, who is a Washington state native, most recently worked as the K-12 Assistant Principal at the International Schools Group in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.

She brings 21 years of experience to her new positions, gained both in the United States and abroad, having worked in areas as diverse as Redmond and Indonesia.

In her newsletter announcement, Leatherwood spoke glowingly of Cays.

“Her work focused on strengthening instructional practices, developing inclusive systems of support, and fostering a culture of compassion and high expectations,” Leatherwood said.

“Rebecca is known for building strong relationships and empowering others to lead.”

Cays has led “schoolwide professional development in areas such as inquiry-based learning, standards-based grading, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).”

She’s also helped “restructure instructional time, align curriculum across grade levels, and implement data-driven tools to track student growth — academically, socially, and behaviorally.”

“Her leadership ensures that teachers, counselors, administrators, and families work together to meet the needs of every child,” Leatherwood said.

Cays has also previously coached middle school basketball and volleyball, while supervising her school’s athletic department.

“She deeply values the role of co-curricular programs in developing leadership, teamwork, and school spirit,” Leatherwood said.

“She is committed to serving with heart, purpose, and a steadfast focus on student success.”

New challenges, big performances

The first road trip was a huge success.

After competing at home in its opener, the Coupeville Middle School track and field team hit the road Wednesday, traveling to Sultan for a three-team meet.

While there, the Wolves collected 19 wins and about a million PRs, while the 8th grade girls and 6th/7th grade boys claimed team titles.

For the 8th grade girls, it was a show of complete dominance, as those Wolves won all six events they competed in.

Tamsin Ward paced CMS with three individual wins, claiming crowns in the 100, shot put, and high jump.

That gives her six victories through the first two meets of the season, and 29 for her middle school career.

Also winning multiple individual titles were Ward’s fellow 8th grader, Cyrus Sparacio (800, 1600), and 7th grade thrower Diesel Eck (shot put, discus).

Whether they won or not, everyone in a Wolf uniform excelled Wednesday, said their coaches.

“Great meet today – Coupeville athletes brought their A-game,” said Brooke Crowder.

“Athletes are challenging themselves, trying new events and pushing themselves to set new personal bests.”

Jon Gabelein agreed, pointing to the fact “their stronger efforts during practice are getting good results.”

Gabelein noted the performance of Wolves such as 7th grader Zariyah Allen, who “has been working especially hard.”

She won the discus, narrowly missing 80 feet in competition after breaking that mark in her warmups.

“Launching it that far during just the second meet brought lots of positive comments from her competitors,” Gabelein said. “I look forward to helping our students continue to improve.”

Transporting a large group of young athletes across the backroads of America is also an experience.

“Traveling as a team of 60 middle school students provides all of us with a whole other dimension to our track season,” Gabelein said. “Especially when it involves a visit to McDonalds without their parents.”
