Rise up and help make volleyball on Whidbey Island super successful. (John Fisken photo)

The Whidbey Volleyball Club needs you.

Once it’s fully up and going, the new organization will offer playing opportunities to Island players from ages 10-18.

But, as things kick off, there’s a need for coaches, equipment and places to play.

With tryouts in late Nov. and the season running through spring, the club is competing for playing space with basketball, and is looking for options outside of the high school and middle schools.

The club is also looking for organizations which would be interested in helping Whidbey Volleyball cover the costs of equipment and anyone interested in joining the coaching staff.

If you can help with any of the issues (playing space, equipment or coaches) contact whidbeyvolleyball@gmail.com today.

Cause, the community that spikes together stays together.

There’s a new volleyball program on the Island and the people behind it want to meet you.

The Whidbey Volleyball Club, which will be open to players ages 10-18, has two parent/player meetings coming up to answer questions before team tryouts.

The meetings are Nov. 14 at the Coupeville High School gym and Nov. 15 at Oak Harbor High School’s Student Union Building.

Both events kick off at 7 PM.

WVC is a nonprofit organization and a member of the Puget Sound Region of USA Junior Volleyball.

Tryouts are Nov. 20 at Oak Harbor High School (registration starts at 12:30, with tryouts from 1:30-3:30).

The season runs through the spring.

It took Cory Whitmore 12 matches to do something not accomplished in the previous 11 seasons.

The first-year Coupeville High School volleyball coach led the Wolves to their first league title since 2004, clinching with a straight-sets win Thursday at Port Townsend.

The 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 victory lifts the Wolves to 6-0 in 1A Olympic League play, 9-3 overall.

While it has three regular season matches left, Coupeville is three games up on Chimacum and Klahowya (both 3-3), and owns tiebreakers on both schools, having already beaten them both twice.

Next up for the Wolves?

Making a run at going 9-0 in league play, a feat accomplished the past two seasons by the CHS girls’ basketball team, but never by a league volleyball team.

In 2014 and 2015 Klahowya went 6-0 and won back-to-back titles, before the league schedule was expanded to nine matches this season to sync up with baseball, softball, soccer and basketball.

The Wolves can also continue their run at the school single-season record for wins — 13 in 2004 — and get ready to open postseason play at home.

As the #1 seed from the Olympic League, Coupeville advances to the double-elimination portion of districts, an event they host Nov. 5.

They’ll need to win two matches that day, while losing no more than one, to advance to state.

The league title is the fourth in program history, following Northwest League titles in 1997, 2001 and 2004.

Kim Meche coached the first two of those teams, while Toni Crebbin was in command of the record-setting ’04 team, which also won a tri-district title and toppled the #1 ranked team in the state.

Those Wolves split four matches with arch-rival La Conner, the state champ that year, beating the Braves for the league title, but falling to them at the big dance.

Thursday night, CHS didn’t play lights out, but it stayed in control all match and put the hammer down when appropriate.

“It was good to pull out the win tonight on the road playing everyone,” Whitmore said. “The girls worked hard to be in the position to be league champions.

“To accomplish this and clinch first place is a result of that hard work and a goal met.”

The Wolves spread out the stats, with Ashley Menges (11 assists and five service aces), Lauren Rose (eight assists, four aces) and Hope Lodell (five kills, five digs) leading the attack.

Sarah Wright cranked out a season-high four kills, while senior captain Valen Trujillo led the squad with 17 digs as she continued to add to her school career record.

The reign of terror is ended.

After two-plus years and 14 straight wins in conference play, the Klahowya High School volleyball squad has been shoved off of its throne.

The dragon slayers?

Coupeville, which went on the road Tuesday and shocked the Eagles, rallying to win in five titanic sets.

The 11-25, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24, 15-9 win gives the Wolves sole possession of first place in the 1A Olympic League, and puts the first dent in Klahowya’s previously ding-free armor.

Now 2-0 in conference play, 4-2 overall, CHS sits a half game up on the Eagles, who slide to 2-1.

Chimacum (1-2) and Port Townsend (0-2), which Coupeville hosts Thursday (JV 4:30, varsity 5:45), round out the league standings.

While anything is far from decided (Coupeville has seven league matches left, including two more against Klahowya), the win guarantees the Eagles will not be able to pull off a third straight undefeated league campaign.

Klahowya went 6-0 in 2014 and 2015.

This year volleyball and soccer expanded their league schedules to nine matches, equaling what basketball, softball and baseball were already doing.

Coupeville’s Rocky-like triumph Tuesday was a sterling testament to the Wolves inner strength, said coach Cory Whitmore.

“I’m so proud of the way we fought and found it within themselves to recover from a rough first set,” he said. “We made plays when we needed to, both defensively and offensively.

“Our poise looked better in close situations and that calm demeanor helped us to come away with a win.”

Wolf junior Hope “The Surgeon” Lodell sparked the victory, chipping in with strong effort in every aspect of the game.

She recorded a team-high seven service aces while adding nine kills and 15 digs.

Mikayla Elfrank pounded home 11 kills to pace the CHS attack, while Valen Trujillo (24 digs) and Katrina McGranahan (five service aces) helped fill up the stat sheet.

Ashley Menges (15 assists) and Lauren Rose (14) teamed up to make a potent two-headed beast at setter, with both playing fairly spotless ball.
