CHS volleyball Senior Night moves earlier

The finale is coming 24 hours earlier than expected.

Coupeville High School is moving its Senior Night for volleyball from Tuesday, Nov. 5 to Monday, Nov. 4.

The move was made to accommodate Sultan’s potential playoff schedule and ensure the Turks wouldn’t have to pull out of the trip to Cow Town.

“If we kept it on the 5th, there was a potential they were going to have to cancel, and with it being Senior Night, we needed to find a “for sure” night,” said CHS Athletic Director Brad Sherman.

JV is set for 5:00 PM, varsity for 6:30, with festivities before the second match.

Coupeville’s varsity, which is a program-best 11-0 heading into a trip Saturday to Neah Bay, features a team heavy in seniors.

Some rankings love for Wolf spikers

The rankings gods favor Coupeville on this day.

The Wolf varsity volleyball team lands in the top 10 in the assessments of two different organizations as Cory Whitmore’s squad prepares for a home match Thursday against Orcas Island.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has CHS, which sits at 5-0 and hasn’t dropped a set yet, at #3 among 2B schools, trailing just Adna (7-0) and Rainier (7-1).

Meanwhile, the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association places the Wolves at #7 in their latest tally.

Adna, Manson (8-1), Freeman (7-0), Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (8-0 and Whitmore’s alma mater), Tonasket (8-2), and Rainier comprise the top six.

Spike today, spike tomorrow

Join the volleyball revolution.

Coupeville Elementary School students in grades K-5 can take part in two free skills clinics in October.

The clinics, run by CHS coaches and players, are set for Oct. 2 and 9.

Both of those are early release Wednesdays (2:30 PM for elementary school students), with the clinics set to run from 3:00-4:30 at the high school gym.

High school athletes will provide an escort for their younger counterparts to walk from CES down the street to the gym.

There is no charge to take part, but parents need to register their children by popping over to:

Suddenly he’s the sage veteran

He’s #1 with a spike.

With softball guru Kevin McGranahan’s departure, volleyball wizard Cory Whitmore is now the winningest active coach at Coupeville High School.

Even with the 2020 season cut in half by the pandemic, the court ace boasts an 88-43 mark during his time at CHS, with trips to the state tourney in 2017 and 2023.

Boys’ basketball head man Brad Sherman, who now doubles as the school’s athletic director, is #2 with 70 wins and counting.

After that it drops down to baseball coach Steve Hilborn and girls’ basketball leader Megan Richter, at 28 and 26 respectively.

Boys’ soccer top dog Robert Wood (16) and football signal caller Bennett Richter (9) are the only other active CHS coaches with victories.

McGranahan won 111 games before exiting this summer.

This will be the ninth season at the helm of the Wolf spiker program for Whitmore, who has posted a winning mark in each campaign.

His tally:

2016: 11-6
2017: 13-5
2018: 11-5
2019: 14-5
2020: 6-3
2021: 11-6
2022: 10-6
2023: 12-7

Not counting tournaments, Coupeville is slated to play 14 regular season matches, then hopes to have a long postseason run.

That leaves open a very real possibility Whitmore could crack triple-digit wins this fall, putting a little distance between himself and Sherman before basketball gears back up in the winter.

They win, son, they win

Another season is in the books, and the win/loss marks are frozen until the fall.

While track and field and girls’ tennis still have trips to the state championships ahead of them next weekend, there are no more games for Coupeville High School sports teams during the 2023-2024 school year.

So, time for the stats hound in me to surface, as we take a look at where active Wolf varsity coaches sit on the ol’ win list.

As we do, remember several things.

Cross country and track don’t record team wins and losses.

Also, the pandemic cost softball an entire season, and sliced the number of games for volleyball and basketball over two campaigns.

Plus, this is a list for ACTIVE Wolf coaches, so don’t ask me where Ron Bagby or Willie Smith or Kyle Nelson or Ken Stange or Randy King are — they’re retired.

That being said, the chart:
