Final school board candidates named

The final two applicants for an open position on the Coupeville School Board have been made public, with the release of the agenda for the Dec. 15 meeting.

Alison Perera and Ward Sparacio will be interviewed by board members that night, coming on the heels of five applicants having finished the process at Thursday’s workshop meeting.

The board interviewed Mark Conway Valencia, David Ford, Chic Merwine, Gregory Thomas, and Jennifer Marzocca.

While the identity of those five was made public before the Dec. 8 meeting, district officials declined to reveal the other two names at the same time.

After the board completes its final two interviews, it will go into executive session to evaluate the candidates, before returning to publicly vote.

The person chosen replaces Glenda Merwine, who resigned due to health concerns. The position goes up for election in 2023.

Of the seven candidates, none have previously served on the Coupeville School Board.

Sparacio ran for a different open position in 2021, losing that race to current board member Morgan White.

Seven stand for school board

Seven applicants will vie for an open position on the Coupeville School Board.

Interviews will be held across two meetings, with the first five going at a Dec. 8 workshop meeting, and two more conducted a week later at the board’s regular monthly meeting on Dec. 15.

The process will select someone to replace Glenda Merwine, who cited health concerns when she resigned with a year left on her current term.

Her position, a Director At-Large one which can be filled by anyone living within school district boundaries, is up for election in 2023.

The applicants scheduled to be interviewed Dec. 8 are:

Mark Conway Valencia
David Ford
Jennifer Marzocca
Chic Merwine
Gregory Thomas

The remaining two applicants have not been publicly named. That information will be included when the agenda for the Dec. 15 meeting is released.

Step up and serve

The Coupeville School Board is accepting applications to fill a spot opened up by the health-related resignation of Vice-President Glenda Merwine.

It’s a Director At-Large position, so candidates can reside anywhere within school district boundaries.

Applications are due by Nov. 30 and can be submitted online or to the Coupeville School District Superintendents Office at 501 S. Main St.

Finalists will be interviewed Dec. 8.

The appointee will finish out Merwine’s current term, with the position going up for election in 2023.

School Board Director resigns

Glenda Merwine

Coupeville students are losing a tireless advocate.

Glenda Merwine, who has been on the school board since 2013, is leaving a year before her term ends.

Her resignation was tendered at Monday’s board meeting and is effective Dec. 1.

Merwine’s replacement, when named, will serve out her term, with the position up for election in 2023.

Initially appointed to replace the departing Carol Bishop in Jan. 2013, Merwine formerly served as the Coupeville Elementary School principal and the district’s Director of Student Learning.

A leadership coach for the Association of Washington School Principals, she also supervises student teachers for Seattle Pacific University and the University of Phoenix.

Merwine is the board’s current Vice President.

Huge impact, lasting legacy

Kathleen Anderson’s legacy will live on at her old stomping grounds.

The Coupeville School District is naming its board room in honor of the late school board president, a decision approved at Monday night’s meeting.

Anderson, who died in September 2021, “was a pillar in the local and state education system for over 40 years,” said Coupeville Superintendent Steve King.

She began her life in education as a teacher, before serving twice on the Coupeville School Board.

Anderson’s first run was from 1980-1989, then she returned to serve from 2004 until her passing.

She was also on the State Board of Education for 15 years, while becoming that board’s first female president.

“As a school district and state board member, Director Anderson was known as someone who always prioritized what was best for students,” King said.

He hailed Anderson’s expertise in capital projects and her advocacy for “educating the whole child through career and technical education, athletics and activities.”

Along with her time on various school boards, Anderson also served on state-level committees and was involved in collective bargaining which “improved working conditions for staff.”

Coupeville School Board Director Nancy Conard, who made the motion on Monday’s vote, was a student in Anderson’s first class as a teacher.

The school district plans to purchase a memorial plaque in Anderson’s honor and will hold a celebration at a later date.
