Sofia Hassapis

Hassapis rises up during volleyball season.

Every year brings new athletes to Coupeville High School.

Some are stepping up from the middle school, while others arrive new to town when their families move here.

Sofia Hassapis was a transplant, uprooted from California when her parents, both doctors, accepted jobs at Whidbey General.

Having never played a team sport before, the dancer and “huge bookworm” decided to kick off her freshman year at CHS by joining the volleyball team.

It was a splendid decision.

With her radiant smile beaming across the court every time she got to take the floor, Sofia was one of the bright, shining lights on the Wolf JV team.

Her skills sharpened as the season progressed, and her heart and hustle were always on display.

Coupeville JV coach Amy King is a pro at making sure every girl on her roster gets their moment in the spotlight, and it was nice to see Hassapis bloom, making friends and fans.

As Sofia celebrates a birthday today (she shares it with nine-time Olympic champion swimmer Mark Spitz, “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan and Oscar-nominated actress Laura Dern), we wish her all the best.

California’s loss was Coupeville’s gain, Miss Hassapis.

The dance goes on.

The Whidbey Island Dance Theatre is currently in the middle of putting on its 22nd annual production of The Nutcracker.

Notable for Coupeville fans is the fact two Wolves are dancing in the ballet — CHS freshman Skyy Lippo and junior Sylvia Hurlburt.

You still have three chances left to see the duo on stage, with two performances Saturday (2 PM and 7:30) and one Sunday (2 PM).

The show is being held at South Whidbey High School’s Performing Arts Center (5675 Maxwelton Rd in Langley).

Emily Licence

Emily Licence

Softball is out for now, but she’ll always have dance.

Former Coupeville High School diamond star (and noted cookie baker) Emily Licence is now a sophomore at Chaparral High School in California.

While a knee injury has sidelined her softball career for a moment, the scrappy third-baseman, who helped lead the Wolves to state for the first time in 12 years during her freshman season, is continuing to dance.

She recently performed as one of the lead dancers in a night that combined talent from Chaparral, a 4A school, and neighboring rival Temecula Valley.

The dancers opened with a modern dance set to “Chandelier” by Sia, which was dedicated to Licence’s teacher, in memory of a friend she had lost.

They then switched up the mood with a Christmas performance set to “Santa Baby” that included pointe ballet.

“The performance went great and the audience was very encouraging!,” Licence said.

No word on whether she’s still baking cookies, cause, you know, UPS and Fed Ex deliver and … yep, I’ll see myself out now.

Chelsea Randall, the early days. (Photo courtesy Savannah Randall)

Still wonderful.

Still wonderful. (Kelsey Simmons photo)

I knew the half-whispered legends, but had never seen real evidence.

At least not until I got up with a headache at 3 AM in the morning and, boom, there it was in the form of a surprise email from her younger sister.

Suddenly, the stories of the early days of Chelsea Randall actually took solid form.

The most talented person I know, captured during her early days as a dance prodigy. Her smile lighting up the world, her love of dance exploding out of a photo from the past.

Before Chelsea became a choreographer, writer, director, editor and a billion other things. Before she became the petite ball o’ fire who lights up the world every day, none more so than in the moments leading up to her 30th birthday Wednesday.

Many in Coupeville will know her as the manager at Christopher’s on Whidbey, a job she handles with great grace under pressure.

A select few will know all that she has accomplished in her life leading up to this day. Her resume, which she rarely discusses, is the stuff of legend.

Springing from a family deeply immersed in the entertainment industry, headed up by grandfather Pitt Herbert, who acted with everyone from Jimmy Stewart to Elvis, Chelsea is born to show biz.

Her mom, Elizabeth Herbert, her dad, Phil Randall, and her lil’ sis, Savannah Randall, all actively involved in theater.

Her parents have spent the summer in Vegas, working nightly on a highly-successful production of “Menopause: The Musical” that’s playing at the Luxor on the Strip.

I could go on and on, detailing Chelsea’s brilliance and talent, but, since she is not fond of self-promotion, let’s leave it at this — she is amazing.

In every way, every day, her light shines across the world and makes it a wonderful place.

I hope her birthday is as awesome as she is.

And the photo? Better than Excedrin.

The next time I say no to an offer of free cookies will be the first time.

Nothing makes me quite as excited to write about an upcoming dance for Coupeville Middle School students as an offer to be paid off in cookies by the event’s organizer.

I am easy, and Ms. Julia Felici knows it, apparently.

So, to fulfill my contract, here’s the info you need and want to know if you are a seventh or eighth grader at CMS or the parent of one who wants them out of the house for a few hours, doing something productive.

When: Saturday, March 29.

Where: Coupeville Nordic Lodge (63 Jacobs Road)

Time: 7-9 PM

Cost: $3.00 (very reasonable)

Open to: CMS students

Put on by: Julia Felici, CHS senior and all-around upstanding citizen (I vouch for her), as part of her community service work with The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls.

Fun facts about Ms. Felici — she got the biggest ovation of the 2012-2013 basketball season when, late in the year, she suddenly broke out moves no one knew she had and hit a dazzling jumper, and her dad, Rick, is a highly-respected Island County cop.

Plus, her mom, Monica, is one of my go-to ladies when it comes to getting free hamburgers from the concession stand ladies at CHS sports events.

So, this is no fly-by-night event organizer. This is a young woman with roots in the community, CMS parents.

Song requests: Can be made by leaving comments at the event’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/435022503298515/
