Learn from the past, build for the future.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team is 3-2 heading into a game at Klahowya Tuesday night.

The Wolves were in the exact same situation last season — same record, same upcoming foe — and eventually finished 16-6, having advanced to state for the first time in a decade.

As he ponders Saturday’s non-conference loss to South Whidbey and the road ahead, CHS coach David King swings by the Coaches Corner to offer his early-morning thoughts.

Time to reflect after five games in our season.

At times we play at a high level. Then there are times we do not play well.

During the down times we are making the same mistakes and aren’t learning from them.

It’s about being consistent.

My first thought was we aren’t a consistent team. Then watching video and reflecting a little deeper I have a change of heart.

We are consistent in being inconsistent.

We need to start making changes and not repeat the same mistakes.

If we can figure out how to be consistent in a positive way, we have the athletes and players to play well against any opponent.

The season is still young, we have league games to play and some tough non-league teams to play.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the players do to take the next step in their games.

We can handle being consistently bad or consistently good. By that I mean, if we are bad all of the time, we know what to fix.

And can improve quickly.

Consistently good, means we have things figured out and playing well as a team.

It’s the inconsistency that is causing our issues.

They’re riding a wave of euphoria.

Coming off of back-to-back wins over Seattle Academy and Friday Harbor, both schools which made it to state last year, the CHS girls basketball squad is flying high.

Now the Wolves plunge into 1A Olympic League play against Chimacum and Klahowya this coming week, trying to keep Coupeville’s 18-game undefeated streak in conference play alive.

As he prepares, Wolf round-ball guru David King found a few moments to take up residence in the Coaches Corner.

His thoughts:

Defensively when we are active and communicating we can be very disruptive.

We like what we are seeing; however, we are still a work in progress.

This shows in some lapses throughout the first three games.

We are also fouling too much instead of getting in good defensive position.

Offensively we aren’t quite on the same level as our defense.

Heading into our first league games this season we have to tighten things up and reduce our turnovers. Most of these are self-inflicted.

Our intangibles are up and down.

We have had one outstanding rebounding game.

Because of the defensive effort we have impressed in getting steals.

I would like to see us sharing the ball more offensively, but I’ve seen glimpses of some very good stuff. As a team, we are doing a good job of being on the same page.

This upcoming week will be a good test for us.

We need to keep doing the things we are doing well and improve in the areas that have gotten us in trouble over the first three games.

Now the real games begin.

High school hoops semi-officially tipped off Saturday night, as the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad played in a eight-team jamboree at Sedro-Woolley.

The 1A Wolves faced a pair of 2A squads in the host Cubs and Bellingham.

CHS round-ball guru David King returns to the Coaches Corner to assess the jamboree, and look towards the start of the regular season Tuesday night.

Three important things came out of the jamboree.

One, we got out and played against someone else and got our first game nerves out of the way.

Two, we now know what we need to work on to improve.

Three, defensively and offensively, if we execute, good things will happen.

We played nervous, rushed and at times panicked. This led to wild shots, high passes and turnovers.

I’m looking for us to settle down and play our game on Tuesday.

At times we ran our offense, but other times we had three or four players running it and one or two not on the same page.

This is something we have talked about as a team that we need to improve from last year.

We forced some things on our dribble drives. Just need to be smarter with our movement.

As a team, our court awareness and passing to an open teammate needs to improve. We do that and we get in-rhythm shots.

We took some poor shots. And the good shots we did take, just didn’t fall (overshot due to nerves, I believe).

We didn’t block out well and we need to have better communication overall.

We have been implementing a few things defensively this year, the team executed these and it led to some turnovers.

Throughout we did a great job of getting out and running the floor and looking ahead.

When we did have the players on the floor and when they all ran the plays, it was something we can build on to get good looks at the basket.

Hustle? We hustled the whole time on the court.

We also had many offensive rebounds, we just couldn’t get the put-backs in.

In a nutshell, we need to keep improving.

Did we do some things well? Yes. Were we pleased with our play? No.

One thing with this team is the competitive drive they have as players.

I’m looking forward to getting back in the gym on Monday, then seeing how we do against Blaine on Tuesday.

One week in, one week to go.

Actually a little less, as the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad hits the floor next Saturday for a jamboree at Sedro-Woolley.

Real games kick off Tuesday, Nov. 29, with the Wolf girls traveling to Blaine, while the CHS boys welcome the Borderites to Whidbey.

At the midway point of the practice run, Coupeville girls’ coach David King swings by to talk for a bit in the Coaches Corner:

Week one was one of the best weeks of practices I’ve been a part of.

Players came in enthusiastic and ready to learn every day. They earned whatever rest they got on Saturday afternoon/evening and all day Sunday.

We have been breaking things down differently along with tweaking some drills to simulate game-like situations.

Oh, and we are introducing a new offense.

The jamboree is less than a week away and there are many things still needing to be introduced along with reviewing what we learned last week.

Offensively we need to continue to put the work in and make it so when the games start, it is like second nature to them.

Knowing this group, they are going to push themselves to make this happen.

Hoops are back.

High school basketball kicks off Monday, with both the Coupeville girls and boys squads set to tip-off their first practices.

As he counts down the hours, minutes and maybe even seconds, Wolf girls coach David King has a few thoughts running through his head:

The excitement of a new season is upon us.

In less than 24 hours I get to start losing my voice for a few weeks. And that’s a good thing.

It means I’m coaching, instructing and encouraging.

The feeling of a new season starting reminds me of memories of a kid the night before Christmas or going to a place like Disneyland for the first time.

Or making that first basket.

We have had a great off season with a punctuation with a great showing at the shooting clinic on Saturday.

Those that attended have already made advancements in their shooting that others missed out on.

Starting tomorrow each and every player has to have the mindset to compete in every drill, every play and every day to earn their spot and playing time.

This includes attitude, effort, skill set, coachability and willingness to put team over individual.
