They will hurt you from everywhere.

Raining down pain on visiting Klahowya in the paint, out of the paint, sometimes from almost out in the parking lot, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team closed its season Monday with a bang.

Paced by 17 from Hunter Smith and 15 from DeAndre Mitchell, the Wolves crunched the Eagles 54-39 to finish with a winning record in their first go-around in the 1A Olympic League.

The young guns won eight of their final 13 games, turning around an 0-5 start to finish 8-10 overall, 5-4 in league play.

They took the season series from both Port Townsend and Klahowya.

The Wolves came out running and gunning Monday like vintage ’80s L.A. Lakers Showtime, with Mitchell standing in for James Worthy and Smith dealing the ball like Magic in his prime.

Throwing down 11 points in the first eight minutes, Mitchell, huge grin flashing at his personal cheering section, was electric.

He opened the game with a sweet jumper, added a couple of free throws, then started launching three-point bombs from improbable angles (and making them).

Where Mitchell left off, Smith and Brian Shank took over.

Smith dropped back-to-back treys of his own to kick things off in the second quarter, as Coupeville took a 19-10 lead and stretched it out to 17 before the half.

When Klahowya tried to stop the ever-slashing Smith from getting to the hoop, he fed big man Shank, who has developed a more-dangerous game as the season has developed.

Primarily an outside shooter last season, the six-foot-one sophomore now shows confidence taking the ball aggressively into the paint and he tore into the Eagles with wild abandon, dropping in several key buckets.

Coupeville saved its most eye-popping play for late in the third.

Launching a break, Smith airmailed a pass down the floor, which hit Mitchell in the hand and deflected perfectly into the waiting grasp of teammate Desmond Bell, who shot to the hoop and laid it up.

Bell later dropped in a three-ball that was so flawless the crowd gasped as it tickled the net on its way down, and the Wolves closed with a crowd-pleasing pack of five freshmen on the floor at the same time.

With their female classmates screaming their approval at decibels rarely heard inside a building, James Vidoni ripped down a rebound and almost tore off an Eagles player’s arm, before Cameron Toomey-Stout dazzled the fans with a season-closing basket.

Shank finished with eight in support of Smith and Mitchell, while Dante Mitchell (6), Bell (5), Toomey-Stout (2) and Joey Lippo (1) rounded out the scorers.

Desmond Bell

It was a tale of two halves.

The first half, not so great. The second, much, much better.

In the end, one half couldn’t salvage another, as the Coupeville High School JV boys’ hoops squad fell 74-42 to visiting Chimacum Friday.

Still, even in a loss (which dropped the young guns to 7-10 overall, 4-4 in Olympic League play), there were enough positives to give Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh hope.

“In the second half we came out and pressed the whole time. I saw a lot of good things happen,” he said. “Kids flying around and forcing turnovers. Playing with the drive and intensity that we ask for.

“They flew around on defense. It was fun to watch.”

Unfortunately, the Wolves had built a large hole for themselves after a first half in which they came out flat.

Further complicating things, the refs went crazy, having the two teams combine for a staggering 84 free throw attempts.

That prevented Coupeville from maintaining any sense of rhythm and made the comeback trail a harder one.

Hunter Smith paced the Wolves with 13 points and four rebounds, while DeAndre Mitchell pumped in 11 points and snatched four boards.

Gabe Wynn dropped in seven, snagged two boards and made off with three steals.

The Wolf JV wraps its season Monday at home against Klahowya and Van Velkinburgh wants to see a strong finish.

“We have one game left and I’m looking to close the JV season on a high note.”

One team played crisply, cut to the basket with conviction, made the extra pass and looked impressive.

Unfortunately for Coupeville High School boys’ basketball fans, their team wasn’t the one that fit that description Wednesday night.

The Wolves had stretches where they were on fire, and got another strong performance out of junior Wiley Hesselgrave, but inconsistency got hammered by consistency as visiting Chimacum ran away with an 87-55 victory.

The loss dropped Coupeville to 4-9 overall, 0-3 in Olympic League play. The Cowboys sit atop the standings at 3-0.

And they looked like the best team in the four-school conference, running and gunning right past the Wolves from the opening tip.

Holding Coupeville without a field goal for nearly eight minutes — Risen Johnson finally banked in a driving layup with 11 seconds left in the opening quarter — Chimacum bolted out to a 23-8 lead and never looked back.

The Cowboys rained down three long-range treys to break things open, with one coming while the Wolves were forced to play 4-on-5.

Wolf senior Aaron Trumbull crashed awkwardly and grabbed his leg while on the floor in the back-court, but the refs let the play go on.

With his teammates attention divided between the action at the other end and Trumbull’s pain, Chimacum took advantage and worked the ball around quickly before lofting in a three-pointer.

Only then did the refs whistle things dead, and Trumbull hobbled off (but did return later).

After an equally rough start to the second quarter allowed Chimacum to stretch its lead to 24, Coupeville put together its best run of the night, closing the half on an 11-2 surge.

Hesselgrave threw down nine points during the run, finishing the quarter with 11 and the game with a team-high 17.

Any hopes of a second-half comeback were snuffed out by Coupeville’s inconsistency, however.

As soon as they put together a 12-6 run, the Wolves suffered a 16-2 letdown in which every Chimacum basket seemed to be of the runaway layup variety.

The Wolves actually put together their best scoring total of the night in the fourth, banging home 18, but even then were outscored by four points.

The final period offered two players a chance to showcase their often electrifying talents.

Johnson pumped in six of his 10 points using a variety of high-flying moves, while DeAndre Mitchell made his varsity debut a successful one.

Following in the footsteps of older brother Anthony Bergeron, Mitchell played the fourth quarter and hauled down several rebounds, then pulled off a steal and layup combo at the buzzer for his first-ever varsity points.

Aaron Curtin, Joel Walstad (back-to-back three-pointers) and Trumbull each scored six to back up Hesselgrave and Johnson.

Matt Shank and Gabe Wynn each dropped in four to join Mitchell in rounding out the scorers.

JV loses a close one: Despite a run in the latter stages of the game, the young guns saw their win streak snapped at three, losing by seven.

“We lacked the energy that carried us the last couple wins,” said CHS coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Made a late push but couldn’t string together enough stops to secure a comeback.”

The loss dropped the Wolves to 5-7 overall, 2-1 in league play.

Coupeville also suffered a second loss when sophomore swing player Gabe Wynn hit the floor hard and had to leave.

A visit to a doctor took a little sting away, as he was found to have a sprain and nothing broken. He’s expected to be out for a week.
