Young Wolves impress at hoops tourney

Survive and thrive.

Winning four of five games, the Coupeville SWISH boys’ basketball team claimed 4th place this weekend in the 7th grade division at the 33rd annual Tulip Basketball Tournament.

The event, hosted by Skagit County Parks and Recreation, featured 30 games in the 7th grade division between Friday and Sunday.

The Wolves, coached by Geoff Kappes, opened with a 38-29 win over the Southside Bombers.

Coupeville kept the hot streak going by bouncing Friday Harbor 40-21, before absorbing its only loss in a 40-28 defeat to Mount Vernon, which finished 3rd in the tourney.

Bouncing right back, the Wolves closed their tourney run with a 44-37 win over Lakewood and a 47-37 defeat of the Bellingham Sonics.

“Arguably the best these kids have ever played,” said Wolf Mom Taylor Little. “Great coaching, great playing, and teamwork.

“Coach Kappes is amazing with them. He is an amazing leader and knows how to get kids set up to succeed.”

The Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams are 75% through their season, with matchups against Lakewood and South Whidbey still looming on the schedule.

Sweet sweep in rivalry rumble

Round one in the hardwood rivalry wars goes to Cow Town.

Traveling to South Whidbey Tuesday, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams snagged three wins in as many games, firing a dramatic opening shot.

Next up in the battle for Island superiority are high school games Friday in Langley, before the middle school programs reunite in Coupeville Dec. 16 for their season finales.

How Tuesday played out:

 

Level 1:

Winning its second straight game, Coupeville’s top squad rolled to a 37-27 victory.

The Wolves, now 2-3 on the season, got balanced scoring, with seven different players scorching the nets in Langley.

Jonathan Kappes knocked down a team-high eight points to pace the attack, with Kamden Ratcliff and Diesel Eck hot on his heels with seven apiece.

Calvin Kappes (4), Chayse Van Velkinburgh (4), Xander Beaman (4), and River Simpson (3) finished the scoring, with Beaman notching his first points of the season.

Rounding out the roster were Trey Stewart, Trenton Thule, Darius Stewart, Maverick Walling, and Colton Ashby.

Level 2:

Claiming their first victory in five games, the Wolves romped to a 27-18 advantage by game’s end.

Cyrus Sparacio and Gracen Joiner had the hot hands, contributing eight and seven points to the cause, respectively.

Ashby (6), Darius Stewart (4), and Cole Van Dyke (2) also made the net jump, with Jacob Lujan, Mario Martinez, Xander Flowers, Aiden Wheat, and Jonah Meek seeing floor time for CMS.

 

Level 3:

Les Queen was on a rampage, burning down the gym with a torrid 27-point performance as Coupeville thunked South Whidbey 37-10.

Queen, who leads all CMS scorers this season with 62 points, went off for 13 in the first quarter, before coasting in with six more in both the second and third frames.

With the win, the Wolf third team, which has played one less game than its counterparts, gets to 2-2 on the season.

Liam Stoner rattled the rims for six points in support of Queen, while Jack Bailey and Henry Jackson dropped in their first buckets of the year.

With three first-time scorers Tuesday, the number of Coupeville players who have tallied a basket in 2024 rises to 22 and counting.

Talon Gamble, Kion Tellery, Carson Marley, and Oliver Miller also hit the hardwood for the Wolves as they ran away with the win.

Road warriors, hardwood heroes

The first road trip is in the books.

Having opened the season with three consecutive games at home, Monday brought a new wrinkle to the lives of the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball players.

The Wolves clambered on the bus, endured a trek to the wilds of Granite Falls, and now head into the Thanksgiving break.

CMS will reemerge Dec. 3, when it travels to South Whidbey to kick off the back half of its eight-game schedule.

After that comes trips to Sultan (Dec. 5) and Lakewood (Dec. 9), before the home finale Dec. 16 against South Whidbey.

How Monday’s mission to Granite played out:

 

Level 1:

Coupeville’s top team snagged its first win of the campaign, polishing off the Tigers 33-26.

The Wolves rippled the nets from distance, drilling four three-balls to claim the victory.

Two of those bombs came off the fingertips of Trey Stewart, while Calvin Kappes and Chayse Van Velkinbergh each netted one of their own.

Overall, Stewart and Van Velkinburgh paced the Wolves, each netting nine points, with Diesel Eck powering through the paint for six.

Calvin Kappes (5) and Jonathan Kappes (4) rounded out the scoring attack, while Xander Beaman, Maverick Walling, River Simpson, Trenton Thule, and Kamden Ratcliff also saw floor time for the Wolves, who sit at 1-3 on the year.

 

Level 2:

A lower scoring affair, with Coupeville (0-4) coming up just short in an 18-11 defensive thriller.

Gracen Joiner knocked down a team-high four points, with Jacob Lujan (2), Darius Stewart (2), Cyrus Sparacio (2), and Cole Van Dyke (1) also scoring.

Colton Ashby, Xander Flowers, Liam Stoner, Mario Martinez, Jonah Meek, and Aiden Wheat rounded out the CMS roster on this day.

 

Ready to rumble.

Level 3:

Les Queen continued his torrid scoring pace, accounting for 11 of his team’s 13 points in a loss to Granite.

Kion Tellery banked in the Wolves (1-2) other bucket, with Oliver Miller, Carson Marley, Jack Bailey, Braxton Beshear, Stoner, and Talon Gamble also in uniform.

Bottom of the net, baby!

They’re chasing those buckets.

Three games into the season, 17 different Coupeville Middle School basketball players have made the scoreboard pop.

After opening the season with three straight games in their own gym, the Wolves play their next four in rival encampments.

Adapting to different gyms, while still hitting the bottom of the net, is an art form, so time will tell which players will rise to the moment.

Going forward, this is where the Wolves stand through Nov. 22.
