The first chapter has been written.

Kicking off a new basketball season in style Thursday, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ hoops teams won two of three in Sultan, with 22 Wolves getting in the scoring column.

The trek off-Island is one the CMS hoops stars will quickly get used to, as they play their first three, and four of their first five, on the road this season.

For Coupeville’s coaching staff, the season debut was one to embrace.

“Everyone worked their tails off,” RayLynn Ratcliff said. “Very proud coaches and showed us what we gotta work on!”

How the day played out:

Team #3:

Balanced scoring was the name of the game, as Coupeville’s C-Team opened things with a 31-12 win.

The Wolves rang up eight points in each of the first three quarters, then toned it down (just slightly) with seven in the final frame.

Luke Blas and Jack Bailey each pumped in six to lead the way, with Liam Stoner and Logan Flowers chipping in with four apiece.

Alton Hansen (3), LJ Schultz (2), Dreyke Mendiola (2), Logan Dees (2), and Jonathyn Driscoll (2) also scored, with Oliver Miller, Gabe Reed, Vincent Alguire, Dom Durbin, and Burke Winger rounding out the roster.

Team #2:

Led by a 14-point performance by Braxten Ratcliff, the Wolves were in control all game, romping to a 45-18 victory.

The third quarter was a particular killer, as CMS went to the locker room with 17 first-half points, then exploded for 17 more to open the second half.

Les Queen (6), Abel O’Neil (5), Xander Flowers (5), Henry Purdue (4), and Nico Strong (4) helped share the offensive load, with Hayden Maynes (3), Brady Sherman (2), and Brayden Grinstead (2) also filling up the bucket.

Mario Martinez, Mendiola, and Bailey saw floor time as well for the Wolves.

Team #1:

Coupeville’s only loss was a close one, with the Wolves trailing just 12-11 after one frame, and up 22-21 at the half.

Unfortunately, the Turks, always a tough foe, rallied in the second half, using a 25-15 run across the final 14 minutes to claim a 46-37 win and salvage a bit of the day.

Wolf big man Diesel Eck topped all Coupeville players with 15 points, while River Simpson chipped in with 11 to provide a strong one-two combo.

Trey Stewart (8) and Kamden Ratcliff (3) were the only other varsity CMS players to make the net jump, with Colton Ashby, Xander Beaman, Gracen Joiner, Jacob Lujan, Darius Stewart, Maverick Walling, and Aiden Wheat also in uniform.

What’s next:

The road trip was worth it.

Playing as the home team in someone else’s stadium Saturday, the Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League Seniors gridiron squad claimed a title, beating Arlington 28-20.

The victory caps a perfect 10-0 season for the Wildcats.

With no youth football program offered in Coupeville, three Wolves wore the purple and gold this season.

Island unity has carried them to the cusp of a gridiron title.

The Oak Harbor Football and Cheer League Seniors football squad, which features three Coupeville Middle School students, is a perfect 9-0 after destroying Bellingham 36-20 Saturday in a semifinals clash.

Now, the Wildcats (and their Wolf stars) head to Arlington next Saturday, Nov. 8 to play that town’s team in the championship game.

Despite traveling, Oak Harbor will be considered the home team in a game set to go down starting at 5:00 PM at Arlington High School.

Kamden Ratcliff (left) and Diesel Eck will sport the red and black again while playing middle school basketball.

Since Coupeville doesn’t have youth football programs, interested Wolves end up joining the North enders to begin their careers, before putting on the red and black once they hit high school.

Currently bouncing between towns are Coupeville Middle School students Max Myers, Diesel Eck, and Kamden Ratcliff.

They doubled up on day two.

Putting an emphatic stamp on the season Thursday, the Coupeville Middle School track and field team picked up three more titles at the Cascade League Championships.

Competing at Lakewood, the Wolves claimed wins in the shot put (Collin Mirabile and Diesel Eck) and high jump (Malachi Chapa).

That comes on the heels of three titles Monday in the opener of the two-day finale, when Tamsin Ward (shot put, high jump) and Les Queen (discus) reigned supreme.

With his victory, Eck, a CMS 7th grader, reaches 13 wins on the season — the most for a Wolf middle school boy in one go-round.

At least according to athletic.net, which goes back to 2008 with its middle school results.

Tamsin Ward exchanges well wishes with a rival.

Ward, who had two top-three performances in sprint races Thursday, finished her final CMS campaign with 16 wins, second-best all-time behind Lindsey Roberts 19-win season as an 8th grader in 2015.

With 39 wins across three seasons, Ward departs the middle school scene with the CMS career record.

While Monday’s meet featured a mix of prelims and finals, Thursday was all finals, with the Wolves holding up well.

Competing under the brightest spotlight, CMS athletes racked up 21 PRs on the final day of the season.

Zaydyn Dees streaks to a PR in the 800.

“An amazing fact about track and field is that PRs become increasingly more challenging to earn each time you get one,” said Coupeville coach Jon Gabelein.

“Despite this logic, several of our athletes were able to overcome that challenge today.”

Coupeville’s 6th/7th grade boys finished second in the team standings behind Lakewood, while both CMS girls’ teams claimed 4th.

The Wolf 8th grade boys were 5th in a seven-team field.

South Whidbey swept team titles in both girls’ competitions, with King’s coming out on top among 8th grade boys’ squads.

Wolf coaches preached growth and improvement, something their young athletes demonstrated all season.

“We hope that our athletes found this year’s track season to be a rewarding adventure,” Gabelein said.

“The hard work they put in has made them stronger and faster than they were when they started. I encourage them to stay active throughout their summer.

“They really came together as a team and supported one another.

“I enjoyed helping them stay on the path towards continued improvement and realize that even the not-so-great results can be steps towards further growth.”

“I can’t believe this was the last regular season meet. It feels like we just started this adventure!”

Coupeville Middle School track and field coach Jon Gabelein may be feeling like spring is flying by, but his Wolves continue to take advantage of their time in the spotlight.

Competing Wednesday at a three-team meet in Langley, CMS capped the regular season with 16 wins, a zillion PRs, and some history.

Squaring off with King’s and host South Whidbey, the Wolves won the boys 6th/7th grade team title, while earning second in the other three team tussles.

The history came courtesy 8th grader Tamsin Ward and 7th grader Diesel Eck.

Eck picked up three wins Wednesday, capturing shot put and discus titles while also running a leg on a triumphant relay squad.

That gives him 12 victories on the season, tying him with then-8th grader Alex Murdy (2019) for the most by a CMS boy in the modern era.

Ward went one better in Langley, sweeping to wins in the 100, 200, shot put, and high jump, which puts her at 14-0 heading into the Cascade League Championships June 2.

That’s second-best in CMS track history, trailing just Lindsey Roberts, who won 19 times as an 8th grader in 2015.

Ward has 37 wins across the past three seasons, most career victories by a Coupeville Middle School student.

One of Coupeville’s relay teams heads into action.

Across the board, Coupeville athletes seized the opportunity to shine Wednesday, with many of them picking up new events as the season winds down.

“Embracing that new event PR rush!” said CMS coach Kelly Powers.

“You never know what event will resonate with you until you try it in competition and even though one Wolf remarked ‘I’ll never do THAT again!’ it’s great they’re trying things on to see what fits!

“And who knows, sometimes we come back to what challenges us … at least I hope so!

“It was great to see so many smiles and athletes that don’t take themselves so seriously they can’t have some fun!”

Kaleigha Millison soars in the long jump.
