Once a Wolf, always a Wolf -- softball/cheer/cookie baking whiz kid Emily Licence.

Once a Wolf, always a Wolf — softball/cheer/cookie baking whiz kid Emily Licence.

There are a million, billion twinkling lights in the Wolf Nation universe, and two of the brightest share a birthday today.

Zane Bundy and Emily Licence are united by the day they popped into the world, and by general awesomeness, if not by a school anymore.

Licence, who a year ago was just about to slap on her face mask and patrol third base for CHS at the state softball tournament, now lives in California after a family move.

But just because she’s in a different state doesn’t detract a bit from the legacy she left behind during her days as a Wolf.

Scrappy infielder and pitcher. Peppy cheerleader. A saint who baked me cookies and presented them to me at one of her softball games.

Emily was all of those things, plus a talented dancer and owner of a serene, sweet personality.

Now, another town, another school, benefits from having her grace them with her presence, but she was a Wolf first, and a pretty darn great one.

One of us, always.

Mr. Bundy is a high-flying daredevil on the soccer pitch who rocks a suit and tie combo like few high school students ever have.

It still throws me off a bit to see him cruising through high school as a matinee idol, since he’s one of the kids who grew up in the aisles of Videoville.

He was always super cool even as a young boy, and, while the hair and clothes have gotten a bit fancier (the guy is the king of slick soccer shoes), Zane is still as friendly and easy-going as always.

Both of today’s birthday cake recipients are good athletes and better people, and should make their parents truly proud.

Whether I’ve known them most of their life, or just for a brief time, they have both impressed me and, I am sure, will continue to do so.

Wherever they celebrate today, I wish them both the best.

Happy birthday Emily and Zane.

Softball is out for now, but she’ll always have dance.

Former Coupeville High School diamond star (and noted cookie baker) Emily Licence is now a sophomore at Chaparral High School in California.

While a knee injury has sidelined her softball career for a moment, the scrappy third-baseman, who helped lead the Wolves to state for the first time in 12 years during her freshman season, is continuing to dance.

She recently performed as one of the lead dancers in a night that combined talent from Chaparral, a 4A school, and neighboring rival Temecula Valley.

The dancers opened with a modern dance set to “Chandelier” by Sia, which was dedicated to Licence’s teacher, in memory of a friend she had lost.

They then switched up the mood with a Christmas performance set to “Santa Baby” that included pointe ballet.

“The performance went great and the audience was very encouraging!,” Licence said.

No word on whether she’s still baking cookies, cause, you know, UPS and Fed Ex deliver and … yep, I’ll see myself out now.

Coupeville softball fans can send their unbeaten Central Whidbey Little League Juniors All-Star squad off to the state tournament in style Friday afternoon.

The Venom, who boast a 17-0 record and have beaten every opponent by 10+ runs this season, will be meeting at the CHS field at 3 PM before departing for Shoreline.

That gives fans, family and townsfolk the chance to make some noise on the prairie and give their warriors an emotional boost as they hit the road.

Central Whidbey opens the eight-team, double-elimination tournament with a game against Ridgefield 4 PM Friday.

The Fun Police will not be on the premises, so noisemakers are welcome. Cow bells, unite!

The run to state was a last trip as a family.

Now, the off-season will strip away close to half of the Coupeville High School softball squad, as family moves will pluck three girls, including two starters, from the Wolf roster.

CHS coaches David and Amy King already knew they would lose seniors Haley Sherman, Madeline Roberts and Breeanna Messner to graduation.

Now you can add sophomore Emily Coulter and freshmen Emily Licence and Erin Josue to the list of those saying goodbye.

Coulter, who started most of the season at second base, is following her parents overseas, as mom Sheila has received a military transfer to Italy.

While she’s sad to leave her Wolf teammates behind, the always-plucky Coulter is looking forward to the radical life change coming her way.

“It’s been an experience I’ll never forget!,” she said. “And hey, how many kids are able to say that they’ve lived in Italy?”

Licence, the starting third baseman and team’s #2 pitcher, is moving back to California with her family, while super sub Josue is off to Seattle to live with her dad.

Miss Licence has promised to leave her cookie recipe behind, which makes the departures a bit less wrenching. But just a bit.

All three young women were good athletes and better people and will be missed.

Good luck, ladies. You may finish your high school careers, both athletic and academic, elsewhere, but you will always be a valued part of Wolf Nation.

Emily Licence -- a slick-fieldin', cheer-screamin', delicious-cookie-bakin' sensation.

Emily Licence — a slick-fieldin’, cheer-screamin’, delicious-cookie-bakin’ sensation.

Emily Licence has had a pretty good freshman year.

A two-sport Coupeville High School star (cheer and softball), she solidified herself as one my favorites the day she helped kick-start Cookie Wars 2014 by bringing me home-made cookies after a softball game.

We could talk about her slick fielding at third base for the state tournament-bound Wolves.

Her coach, David King, compared her glove work after one game to that of former Major League Baseball great Omar Vizquel, and it’s true. She has a knack for coming up with the big play.

Or, we could discuss Emily’s bright, sunny personality, which shines through both as a Wolf cheerleader and when she crams the stands in support of her fellow CHS athletes.

But let’s admit the truth — they were really good cookies. And I am easily swayed by sugar.

So, today, as Emily celebrates her birthday, two days before she plays on the biggest stage of her still-young sports career, I wish her a really happy day and the best of luck.

You came in like a pro, Miss Licence, you carry yourself with grace and class and you know when to gently bribe the press. That’s impressive.

Never change, cause you’re already awesome.
